djphinfansubscriberOPThrough 11 weeks of the NFL season, Grimes has shown that happy-go-lucky can work just as well — if not better — than fire-and-brimstone.
Simply put, he just might be the lockdown corner the Dolphins have searched for since the days of Patrick Surtain and Sam Madison.
The scouting website Pro Football Focus ranks Grimes as the third-best corner in the league. He has three interceptions. He hasn’t allowed a touchdown all season. Quarterbacks have a rating of just 62.4 when throwing to his coverage area.
And he has done it without a lot of help. Fellow Dolphins corner Dimitri Patterson estimates the coaches ask Grimes to play man-to-man between 80 and 90 percent of the time — a figure Grimes didn’t dispute.

Just geeked over this dude, it's been so long since we've watched a real corner play ball at the position.
The way he digs that back foot and jumps a route, the beautifully timed elevation, the incredible instinct and balance on the pick 6, his fearlessness coming up for run support..he's a joy to watch.
Best free agent signing of the offseason in the whole damn league..
And there's this to go with the package.
“I just reacted, flipped my hips and ran,” Grimes explained. “I was tracking the ball and made a play. It wasn’t anything, really.”
That’s the kind of humility that makes Grimes a refreshing change of pace in a league where many defensive backs talk as much (if not more) as they cover.
Take, for instance, Seattle’s demonstrative Richard Sherman, who is also having a great season. He leads the Pro Bowl voting at his position with more than 250,000 votes.
But if Sherman had Grimes’ low-key personality, he wouldn’t be nearly as popular.
Grimes, meanwhile, isn’t among the the top-two vote-getters at his position despite playing at an empirically high level.
When asked about that incongruity this week, he simply shrugged.
“That’s the story of my whole thing,” Grimes said. “I'm not a first-round pick or anything like that. I’m not a name. I didn’t go to a big school. I’m not known that well.”
Grimes continued: “Even if I’m playing well, I’m not that big of a name. I’m not mad about it. It’s just how it goes. ... I’ve just got to work that much harder. As long as my team knows I’m playing well, and people I really care about know I’m playing well, that’s all that really matters to me.”

I seriously wonder how all the drama and dysfunction here will affect Miami players who are FAs after this year. Will they be more likely to leave because of it? More likely to stay because there is an "us" versus the world feeling?
Dunno, but I assume it has to factor in slightly... after dollar amount, of course.

Randy Starks is the big unknown going into free agency as I think Grimes is near guaranteed to get the tag. Something just tells me this team won't pay big money for a 31 year old DT. Soliai on the other hand may find a soft market (you never know) and come back at a reasonable price.
I know on this board there is a big push to clean house but I think this is more wishful thinking. We're 5-5 and in the thick of the playoff hint with a 2nd year QB. We haven't gone all Atlanta Falcons on everyone. Ireland may be gone but I doubt Philbin is. Having said this, if the coaching staff stays, I think they almost have to make some kind of play in free agency for o-linemen. It would be nice to know who was behind the Albert trade talks because I think most now would have given up that 2nd to secure the LT position. I doubt he'll get the tag again and we might make a play for him - will be very expensive though.

It would not surprise me if the FO offers him a low ball contract and he ends up walking away from them.

The 4th rated corner currently is Tyrann Mathieu. I seem to recall some folks here wanted us to draft him.
As for Revis you know the Jets would never trade him in the division.

Here's the issue...
I don't think Ross trusts Ireland to do any more negotiating for the team. If he plans to fire him (and he should) then he'd be insane to let him make contract moves.
The real question is, WHO will be the decision maker/GM on contracts come free agency in March.

UFAs who sign a 1 yr deal cannot be extended/resigned until that deal is up.

patcobbforum_veteranhave said it before, will say it again, best fa signing other than wake by Ireland. Would rather pay the man than franchise him. He is a lock down corner. Relies more on instint and skill other than just speed or size. He will be great for a few more years.
