http://newyork.cbslocal.com/2013/08/21/vintage-rex-ryan-jets-will-rank-among-top-5-defenses-in-nfl/ Just like they've won that Super Bowl, right
if he's calling the defensive plays, I can see them being in the 12-15 range, but that's it. they just don't have the top notch talent to get close to 5 anymore.
It's not even so much about the talent level of their defense. That offense is likely to be so awful that even if they had top 5 talent on defense, they would get shredded just from the offense continually putting them in terrible situations. Just like all those years the early 2000s Ravens defenses struggled with Kyle Boller leading the offense.
What happen to our Jet friends? Especially that Revis poster, he must be still be heartbroken about his boy heading to Tampa.
You mean DarelleRevis AKA 124 AKA This blob (the one on the left): My guess is at some kind of all you can eat buffet. Or applying for Santa Clause gigs at shopping malls. Or bra shopping.
I still browse these forums occasionally. I think the Jets defense has a good chance of being ranked in the top 10. They ranked 8th last year (in total yards) and I think they have better personnel this year. Obviously Revis is gone, but he was gone for the majority of the season last year as well. Wilkerson is really turning into a nice player. Coples has also progressed nicely and his return should bolster the defense. I like what I've seen from the rookie, Richardson. I also like the part-time players they picked up and I think Damon Harrison is going to end up a starter. They are still weak at the safety position and Milliner is going to have his growing pains. But whatever you think of Ryan as a head coach, he is an excellent defensive coordinator. If Wilkerson, Coples and Richardson continue to improve, they could end up with a very potent pass rush....the one thing Ryan has not had since he's been head coach. If they can generate consistent pressure out of their base package, I can definitely see them being a highly ranked defense this year.
I pay no attention to rank by yards allowed or yards gained for a team. I like to see the overall. But if Rexy thinks they'll be top 5, that means they'll be top 15, going by his previous record on predictions. I can see that as a possibility, they're usually much better on D than O when he's calling the shots, which he's supposedly doing this year.
Total team stats...lots of other stuff going on. http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/stats/byteam?group=Defense&cat=Total
Defenses could shut a team down for 3 quarters, and their offense could take like a 3 or 4 touchdown lead, then go to prevent, i.e., give up a crapload of passing yards that don't really mean squat...happens often.
The Redskins are a great example of this. RG3 is racking up yards and scores in garbage time, but failing miserably in the first three quarters.
The garbage time stats are one of the reasons why I mistrust "bulk" stats. I believe the Jest D will be solid, as I think "lockdown cb" is an overrated factor in the NFL, so losing Revis is not that big a deal. Their problem is paper thin depth and poor Safety play and a punchless offense. Top 5 D+ Bottom 5 offense=5-11 Add in their Special Teams just are not as good as they once were. TBH, they remind of a Sparano team w/o even good Qb play or Ronnie or Rickey or Reggie.
this is a damn good defense. only weakness is too many stupid penalties but the pressure they bring is immense. no idea why you guys are putting this defense down
They haven't played any real teams yet. The best so far has been an incredibly depleted Patriots offense. I'm sure they're a good solid defense but top five? We'll see I guess.
Bingo. They've played two really bad offenses and one mediocre one Sent from my SPH-L720 using Tapatalk 4
Like everyone else in the AFC East, the Jets haven't really been tested yet.* They played Brady well but he had no one to throw too. It's interesting that the AFC East teams get to play each other in September but the Phins don't get to play anyone in the division until late October.
I think this is going to be the best defense that Ryan has had as Jets coach. I do agree that they haven't played any powerhouse offenses yet, but Doug Martin for TB is pretty solid and the Jets held him to 2.7 ypc. NE got their one TD at the expense of blown coverage by a rookie and Manuel was off to a solid 2 game start before the Jets held him to under 50% passing. I know a lot has been made about the Miami defensive line, but NY's in no joke. For all the people that laughed at the Sheldon Richardson pick, that guy is going to be a stud. What a pick he turned out to be. I do agree that the safety play is weak and Cromartie can get burned by anyone on any given play. But so far the Jets defense has been pretty relentless and when Ryan can generate pressure without blitzing, he can really scheme up a defense that is tough to score on. By the way, congrats on the 3-0 start. The Dolphins look legit.
The Jets are making all the right moves to bolster the defense for the future while also offering some immediate returns to boot. The less spoken about one is the drafting of small school Demario Davis in the 3rd round who has a chance to become a special player and the heart of NY's defense. If they're in position next draft to grab a premier rusher to solidify the right side like a Vic Beasley, they could be formidable defensively for years to come unfortunately.
Can't under estimate a Rex led defense. Just like we can't underestimate a Belichick led offense. Sent from my LG-MS770 using Tapatalk 4 Beta
I had as much of a draft crush on him as you can have for a small school guy. Then he goes to the Jets. Outside of Demario, all your drafted defensive contributors during Rex's time have been 1st rounders though no?
