"Dolphins RE Jared Odrick says he will shed 20 pounds this offseason

Impacts: He's keeping the weight on for now in case DT Randy Starks leaves in free agency and Odrick has to kick inside. We suspect Starks will be tagged if no long-term deal is reached, and Odrick will stay at end regardless. Even at the lesser weight, Odrick is unlikely to suddenly become an explosive pass rusher."

That's about it in the link on Odrick.

Hmmm, if we keep Starks, and He gets to 275, were gonna go full metal jacket on offense with our resources.

Odrick losing 20 lbs is 285 not 275.

I would rather we draft Tank Carradine in the second and get a real RE pass rush, let Odrick play inside to spell/play nickle and dime situations, and let PS walk next year. If he's available, we have a top 5-10 talent in round 2.

    Well away from here
I think there needs to be a little look at what we 'really' want on defense as opposed to many believe we want on defense as we run a 4-3 - alignment wise. Its not a natural 4-3, and the defensive end position may be the most misunderstood position on this defense. There are certain requirements for the position.

This is EXACTLY what I hav been harping on:when the front office has a better plan they can tell players what to do with their bodies FAR in advance. Odrick should already be able to prep
His body for end or DT because we should already have a vision for this. Ireland needed to get the Starks extension done during the year OR trade Starks, get some value before he left and give Odrick six months to condition his body for end. Instead Odrick may not be sure whether he needs to put ON weight and have a 315 pound body to play inside, or drop weight to have a 280 lb body to play outside, until the end of April.

    No bueno.

I will be interested to see if Odrick, being lighter on his feet, will add a pirouette to his sack dance.

I would rather he lose 20 lbs and make a go of defensive end, or keep on the weight and make a go of defensive tackle. Right now he's in between, and he's a fairly mediocre football player. He wasn't drafted in the 1st round to be a mediocre football player.

I could see him becoming faster and more explosive at 280 lbs...enough to extend his stay at defensive end. Hard for me to imagine that he'd be ideal there, though.

And the fact that he is not big enough to play DT and not light enough to play DE is a symptom of poor planning by the front office. PLayers need to KNOW their role, ahead of time, so they can prepare their body for it.

We are a reactive front office, in many ways, not a proactive one.

"Oh, I guess we don;t have player X to play at that spot... who else do we have? That guy. Let's plug him in there. Hey, buddy, now you will be playing a new role. You have 60 days to transform. Good luck."

All it means if he is twenty pounds lighter is that he will weigh less and still won't be a decent pass rusher. The fact is that Odrick just isn't very good as an NFL defensive lineman. The Dolphins should trade him for a fifth or sixth round draft while they still can.

JW.. I agree that we 'should' trade Odrick... except we already played him out of position for a year, making him look unappealing... so now all you can get is a 6th. No thanks.

Poor resource management by this club. Turning 1sts into lower picks at a consistent rate. The total opposite of successful franchises who trade BACK-UPS for higher picks than they drafted them at.

It's like the organization is a machine that REMOVES value.

Odrick is a pretty good football player and certainly worth far more than a 5th ro 6th. And by no means is he too small to play DT. That's just nonsense. He's 6-5, 300+ and can easily take on more weight if he wanted to (which I don't think he should).

When it's dependent on re-signing Randy Starks or not, what exactly are they supposed to do realistically? Split the difference and have him lose 10 pounds?

It's not really that big of a deal all around.

To me, the defense strikes me as similar to what Seattle does in some respects. Cameron Wake is the on-line pass-rusher they had in Chris Clemons. Odrick is more of Red Bryant style DE than a pure pass-rush end. Koa Misi is a good player, and he's sort of like K.J. Wright in some respects, but Miami could stand to use someone in his spot that could rush the passer more for instance, I doubt many would complain about Odrick if Aldon Smith or Jarvis Jones, if we drafted someone, was coming off the edge instead of Misi.

Even the Bengals defense, whom most compare Miami to doesn't have two DEs in that typical Cameron Wake, Osi Umenyiora, Dwight Freeney, etc. mold. Carlos Dunlap, who is a pretty good pass-rusher, is still a 290lbs DE. Manny Lawson is much more akin to Koa Misi than he is to an Aldon Smith type of OLB. I think the DE in the style of Odrick, Bryant, et al might be one of the principles that Coyle took from Dick LeBeau (one of the 4 guys he mentioned in his introductory presser), and that principle is more 3-4 based.

As Disgustipate said in another thread, and I agree, that Miami's defense is really more like an Under defense, but plays it somewhat backwards, or even in true Over fronts sometimes, because Cameron Wake is almost always rushing from the left.
