Off Season Ideas Dolphins

I would love to pick up a few pieces in the free agency. But the way it is shaping up we can not plan on a FA period until a CBA is signed. Therefore my draft reflected that. If we could get Mankins or Nicks and Zach Miller, and Michael Bush, wow, that would be awesome. That would have a huge bearing on the rest of our needs. Probably drop John Moffitt, Royster, and Oordt and then add Vincent Brown -WR, Rob Hoysler-TE Greg Little-WR (He is awesome)

 

I agree. I dont see any reason why we cant come away with a decent LG, quality #1 back, and a playmaking TE like Miller or Daniels after we shed some cap room. One thing some people tend to forget is that we CAN afford to go after more big-name playmakers on offense b/c we DONT spend $70-$100 million on a QB. That's how it goes- more on a QB=less on skill players. Less on a QB=more on skill players.

Money wise, the Chargers having Philip Rivers for $92 million alone is like us having Marshall, Vincent Jackson, and Henne combined. I'd love to see V Jackson, Marshall, Jernigan, Greg Little, and Owen Daniels on the field together. Jackson, Marshall, and Little would make up a monsterous trio! One of those 3 would be mismatched on probably every down. Henne could throw jump balls all game long. lol.

 

Do we really need to go RT in the first? There are some studs, but we definitely have more pressing needs. When healthy, Vernon Carey is easily a top 5 RT in the league. Easily. I think in order, these are our needs:

I would love to trade down a couple times til either the late first or even out of the first round completely. There aren't too many guys that interest me in the late 1st other than Pouncey and possibly Titus Young or Torrey Smith (depends on how much these guys' stock moves between now and the draft).

In the 2nd-4th rounds, there are so many playmakers and needed positions for us.

I really want us to focus on these 3 rounds. So much talent.

 

Outside of a playmaking WR, I don't think there's a more pressing need than QB protection. I don't put RB in that category b/c there are plenty of them in FA and in the 3rd-4th round of this draft, where as a top flight RT is pretty much only guaranteed in the 1st round this year.

If we're planning on opening up & spread out the offense then we're going to need great protection from both sides, especially if we want to get past teams like the Packers & Matthews in a SB.

Carey costs a lot of money, was injured, and IMO is declining in ability. A RT can start off at LG initially, and then move to RT in a year...... or Carey could be traded outright to free up money to use on a guy like Mankins at LG.

The line needs solidifying, so if it's between a RB, Ingram, (who has been injured and has an easier chance of being injured in the NFL) or a likely Perennial Pro-Bowl RT, Solder (who will see twice as many snaps as Ingram), then I'd prefer the RT, especially since we have an owner who is willing to open his checkbook to grab a top RB in FA.

If we're tying to open it up more, then elite QB protection trumps an emphasis on a running game IMO..... and I don't think I'd call DeMarco Murray or Jaquizz Rodgers a slouch in the playmaking department.

 

Not really. When our line was healthy last season, they looked great in pass protection. I think the only need on our OL is LG at this point. Carey is worth his money when he is healthy. Before this season, he hasn't missed a start since 2005 either.

In the late first, give me Pouncey or Mark Ingram or a playmaking WR and I will be happy. I am leaning more towards Pouncey now, but Ingram has all the potential in the world to become a great starting RB in the NFL. If we pass up on Pouncey and go with a RB or WR, I won't be mad, because there are still a few guards that will be available later in the draft that I could see as potential starters.

What is the point in moving more linemen around? Good offensive lines stick together for years. Right now, like I said, I only see 1 need on the OL, and that is LG. That's it. If we trade Carey, then that opens up another hole and more movement on that line. We then may have 3 completely new starters next season, rather than 1 or maybe 2 on the line. (LG, C, and RT)

I never said that Murray or Rodgers were a slouch...? In fact, I have Murray as my number 4 rated RB in the draft and Rodgers as the guy I want in the 4th round if we don't go TE or Noel Devine.

 

Well my signature has been bearing my draft plan for the past couple of weeks... I just tweaked it this morning from Jake Locker in the first to Cam Newton.

With respect to Locker, mobility aside, the accuracy just worries me too much. When I think about it, what is a better quarterback? One with a strong arm and very little accuracy or one with a weak arm and great accuracy? Rex Grossman/JaMarcus Russell and Chad Pennington/Ryan Fitzpatrick, respectively come to mind. Now, none of these guys have won anything so it's not a perfect example, but I'd take Penny/Fitz over the other two any day of the week.

Anyway, back to the draft, my signature reflects staying pat. As of now, that's the most accurate thing I feel I can do. There are millions of possibilities of trades that could transpire, so it's impossible to tell, really... In my Kaepernick thread, I floated the idea of swapping our 15 for Seattle's 25 and 57, in which case Seattle selects Jake Locker and our draft/offseason could look something like this:

2 (57) - Colin Kaepernick, QB - Nevada
3 (79) - DeAndre McDaniel, FS - Clemson

Baldwin across from Marshall would REALLY open up our offense. We know what we have with Marshall, but Baldwin is a guy who can get deep and make those Calvin Johnson-like jump ball catches. He had a relatively down year last year due to ineffective quarterback play amongst other things, but he is top-15 talent that will slip.

With that, I like the idea of reuniting him with his Nevada tight end, Virgil Green. He's not Rudolph, but he would complement Fasano as our catching tight end and along with Baldwin, Marshall, Hartline and Bess, make us the most dangerous passing team in the league (you hear that, Brady!?)

Hopefully, McDaniel could step into the starting free safety spot.

Franklin would compete to start at the guard position.

Lewis would be our back up running back. Like Baldwin, had a down year on Pitt's anemic offense, but showed Ray Rice/MJD potential in his Freshman year, en route to rushing for 1700 yds and garnering Heisman consideration.

Reid would provide depth behind Carey and be a developmental project.

Pointer is a speedy corner that could, perhaps, compete with Sapp to be our nickel.

Now with this scenario, many of our needs are filled, allowing us to resign our players--namely Incognito and Soliai. We would let Ronnie and Ricky both walk and sign DeAngelo Williams. Our runners would then be Williams, Lewis, Hilliard and Cobbs.

The beauty of this plan, in my opinion, is being able to solve most of our problems from the draft as opposed to free agency.

-Sign Incognition, put him at Center
-Berger moves back to swing G/backup Center

Defense:
-take a sniff at Phil Hunt
-Identify later rd passrushing prospects
-Resign Paul Soliai
-Identify a ILB in FA, maybe someone like Barret Ruud whom the Bucs will not resign

Offense:
-add at least one running back for the practice squad
-sort through Te's on roster and make some decisions
-ditto with the Wr's

QB-Not touching that one.

Imo, Tyrod taylor could be a great football player..I just hope he gets it, and embraces it..I want him on my team..I think he's one of the most talented players in this draft.

 

The kid is just as, if not more electric and explosive in the open field as anyone in this draft...
