what killed baseball is allowing small market cities to have teams. They should eleiminate about ten to twelve teams. get rid of the weakest 250 players and you would see the quality of the sport go up dramatically. right now teams like the yankees support these loser teams. let them die already for the good of the sport
I don't know if I would consider that home grown though because technically I consider home grown guys players who the team has either drafted or signed as an amateur FA. So I wouldn't count guys like Matsui, Ichiro, Matsuzaka, Kei Igawa etc as home grown even though they never played for another MLB team. The only thing that I feel is tricky is when a team makes a trade for a player who never played in the MLB and he spends from time in the minors (i.e. how the Red Sox traded for Varitek and Lowe, they never played for Seattle but were in their system and came to the Sox organization, spent time in the minors and made their MLB debut with the Sox). But even then I don't consider those players to be home grown.
Eliminate 10 to 12 teams? No that's a terrible idea and would never ever happen. If anything you'll see 2 new AL teams after Bud leaves office. You could make an arguement to eliminate 2 teams (like they talked about in the past) but even then there would be a lot of jobs lost both in terms of players and also workers (whether it be front workers or people that sell hot dogs) so that won't happen. But beyond that is just too insane to even think about, sorry.
Or do the correct thing and Cap the freakin sport like ALL others are! Why should it only be the rich spoiled kids that get Christmas? Keep in mind, I am a D-backs fan, and I was almost immediately put out when I did indeed find out they basically bought their championship. Why should they be lent money by the commisioner to by premium players but nobody else? Doesn't this lack of fairness and integrity bother you even a little bit. Think about this, if it was Football that was uncapped, would it bother you that teams like the Cowboys, Patriots and Jests would be able to stack their rosters each and every year? This is no different.
or do the correct thing and if you cant compete become a minor league team like you were meant to be. there are way too many baseball teams in the league that cant compete and are merely fodder for the real teams. get the league down to the healthiest 20 teams and you will see the quality of the sport improve dramatically. the problem with the sport today is too many players starting that shouldnt even be in the big leagues annd thats because we have too many teams this is a problem that all sports have. all sports shpuld eliminate about ten teams or so. the talent pool is way too diluted nowadays
There's more parity in baseball than any other sport right now in terms of the number of different teams making the playoffs and winning championships (baseball has fewer teams that make the playoffs than the other sports too). Even with a cap the same football and basketball teams are always good while the same teams are always bad. At least in baseball besides from the Pirates and Royals that's not always true.
What a great night! I watched all the post-game stuff too. What a great team and I knew they'd win it. Once A-Rod came back, they were the best team in MLB. Enjoy it Yankee fans!
Also regarding small market/need for a cap, how come no one mentions the Twins or A's? Both teams have made the playoffs numerous times this decade and are small markets (although the Twins owner before he passed away this year was the richest owner in baseball). Again just backs up my point about how teams don't need to spend a lot of money to be good, they just need a smart front office.
i was telling my brother that i am really impressed with what the twins do each year... I mean i believe i saw that they were the 24th highest pay roll in baseball, and they constantly make the playoffs...just imagine if they decided to spend some money, how good they could be...
Meanwhile teams like the Tigers and White Sox spend a lot of money to finish 2nd, 3rd and 4th each year in that division. You have to respect what small market teams like the Twins do, and that's even after blowing the Johan Santana trade and trading Matt Garza and Jason Bartlet for Delmon Young who's been a huge bust. Imagine how good they'd be if the Twins actually got good players for Santana and kept Garza and Bartlet? Again and I keep stressing this, it's more about how good your baseball operation people are than how much you spend.
Congrats Yankees for beating my Phillies fair and square....no excuses on my part...you guys just beat us. But the Phillies will be heading back to the World Series for their 3rd straight trip next year. GOOD LUCK, and try not to sign up every free agent in the off season.
gotta give your team credit. you played your hearts out and never laid down. you deserve to be back next year and hope we get to play you again. wanna trade utlley? we'll give you matsui
It's hard to win a World Series....I think it's even harder then winning a Superbowl. I have read a couple columns that have said a Yankees-Phillies World Series repeat is a possibility next year. Las Vegas already has the odds out for next year and the Yankees, Red Sox and Phillies are the favorites to win it next year, in that order. The Royals, Pirates and Nats and are at 100-1 to win it.
Lots of choices and decisions to fill some holes: (forgot about Nady). LF, C (Starter/Backup), Utility, RF will be interesting decisions. Of our FA's, I would like to see if Nady is healthy, if Hairston would agree to Utility role, suspect Molina will return as backup and Burnett battery mate, and also have to decide on Minor League talent if Jackson is ready for OF role. All other FA's I suspect would be gone (Andy has to make the call). I know some fans are eyeing Bay moving from Boston to patrol LF for Yanks (or Holliday from STL), just not sure on that myself. 2009-10 Major League Baseball free agents ATLANTA BRAVES Anderson, Garret OF Gonzalez, Mike RP Hudson, Tim ** SP LaRoche, Adam 1B Norton, Greg 1B/OF Soriano, Rafael RP ARIZONA DIAMONDBACKS Davis, Doug SP Schoeneweis, Scott RP Tracy, Chad 1B BALTIMORE ORIOLES Baez, Danys RP Hendrickson, Mark SP/RP Moeller, Chad C Mora, Melvin 3B BOSTON RED SOX Baldelli, Rocco OF Bay, Jason OF Byrd, Paul SP Gonzalez, Alex SS Varitek, Jason ** C Wagner, Billy RP Wakefield, Tim SP Woodward, Chris 3B CHICAGO CUBS Fox, Chad RP Grabow, John RP Gregg, Kevin RP Harden, Rich SP Johnson, Reed OF CHICAGO WHITE SOX Castro, Ramon C Dotel, Octavio RP Dye, Jermaine OF Podsednik, Scott OF CINCINNATI REDS Hernandez, Ramon ** C Wells, Kip SP CLEVELAND INDIANS Carroll, Jamey 2B/3B/OF Ohka, Tomokazu SP/RP COLORADO ROCKIES Beimel, Joe RP Betancourt, Rafael ** RP Contreras, Jose SP Embree, Alan RP Fogg, Josh SP/RP Giambi, Jason 1B Herges, Matt RP Marquis, Jason SP Rincon, Juan RP Torrealba, Yorvit C DETROIT TIGERS Everett, Adam SS Huff, Aubrey 1B/3B Lyon, Brandon RP Polanco, Placido 2B Rodney, Fernando RP Washburn, Jarrod SP FLORIDA MARLINS Calero, Kiko RP Donnelly, Brendan RP Gload, Ross 1B/OF Johnson, Nick 1B HOUSTON ASTROS Boone, Aaron 1B/3B Brocail, Doug ** RP Erstad, Darin 1B/OF Hampton, Mike SP Hawkins, LaTroy RP Michaels, Jason OF Tejada, Miguel SS Valverde, Jose RP KANSAS CITY ROYALS Chen, Bruce SP/RP Crisp, Coco OF Olivo, Miguel ** C Wright, Jamey RP L.A. Who would have thought that a championship could ONLY cost $1 Billion dollars? Really amazing feat by the New York Yankees!
http://hotstove.mlblogs.com/ Just dont see them retaining his services.....until all other priorities are addressed (assessment of Nady, and bidding on LF "Bay??? or Holliday"???).
