I think CJ is a standup guy, loves doing what he is doing, and a MLB club will enjoy having him on their staff and in the lockerroom...he is a STRAIGHT CLEAN guy. Asking for $120M to wish to be treated like a top flight arm is simpy that...if some team gives it to him, more power to them, I thinks its aggressively overpriced, but I dont fault CJ's skillset and value to help a team and improve a staff. He has been nothing but top notch switching from Bullpen to Starter these past two seasons. I really like CJ as a person, and what he focuses on when between the lines, and when off the field. He is simply caught between a rock and a hard place being viewed as the best of a weak FA Arm offseason, but its not personal if I and others feel he just isnt worth that kind of dough! He and his agent are doing right by him and the players association by asking.

<insert evil laugh> no, no why would you think that!:devil2:

even if its not "on purpose" its still some of the best domino's I have watched in a long, long, time. Its what I wanted and expected in 2004 until the "games that shall not be named" occurred!:shifty:

On purpose? No, it's just not good business to go out of your way to be a thorn in the side. Theo, Jed Hoyer and ben Cherington spend a number of years together and follow the same baseball thinking, so it's understandable that they would interview the same candidates.

    • Commissioner Bud Selig announced that MLB will add two Wild Card teams -- one in each league -- for a total of ten playoff teams. Selig remains hopeful that the change will occur in 2012.

    • MLB owners have approved the sale of the Astros from Drayton McLane to Jim Crane, commissioner Bud Selig announced today, according to Danny Knobler of CBSSports.com (all Twitter links). The commissioner also confirmed that the Astros will move to the American League West in 2013.

Yeah he was head of international scouting. I don't know much about him but the Sox haven't had a ton of success in terms of developing any international players under Theo so maybe this change isn't bad.

Heard that Sandy Alomar had a great first interview but he doesn't have any managerial experience. I'm just sitting back and letting this thing happen, I can't get worked up over who they're interviewing or considering.

Clayton Kershaw won the 2011 National League Cy Young Award, the BBWAA announced (on Twitter). The 23-year-old becomes the youngest Cy Young winner since Dwight Gooden of the Mets won the award as a 20-year-old in 1985.

Kershaw obtained 27 of 32 possible first place votes to beat runners-up Roy Halladay and Cliff Lee. Nine others obtained votes: Ian Kennedy, Cole Hamels, Tim Lincecum, Yovani Gallardo, Matt Cain, John Axford, Craig Kimbrel, Madison Bumgarner and Ryan Vogelsong. Three Phillies placed in the top five and four fifths of the Giants' rotation obtained votes.

He is due for a brand new re-negotiated contract....or a large temper-tantrum....and if Dodgers Ownership is still screwed up, could force their hand. But would think a new deal gets done based on NL Cy Young.

Again who knows how good Alomar will be, he's never managed before. But as far as Valentine, I'd be pretty surprised if he was chosen. It just seems like his name is being thrown out there by the media because he has past managerial experience not because he might be a good fit for the job.

I'd rather them take their time and do their due delligence instead of just jumping at whoever. There's absolutely no reason to rush into a big decision like this. When they hired Francona back in 2003 it was in December when it happened, there things take time. But yeah I get a bad feeling Lucchino is being a puppet master here.

I don't see the point of adding two more WC teams.

I do, 2 additional WC teams sounds great to me as playoff baseball is more or less a payoff to fans of WC teams.

MLB does such a mediocre job of tossing fans bones that Imo this is a great idea.

To make winning the division more important. As we saw this season there is basically no advantage to being a division winner vs. a wild card team. Now if you only win the wild card you have a 50/50 shot of being eliminated in a one game playoff. Also I think the intent is to have more teams playing meaningful baseball in September.

It will be enjoyable especially when both leagues balance out to 15 teams each once Hou moves to AL West.

Then, the 1 game Xtra WC play in will create some interest and fans will "in theory" be interested to that 2nd WC team race. After the 1 game WC play in, nothing really changes with League Division Series, League Championship Series, and World Series playoffs.

Now on the other hand it could be much harder to be the next STL or TB where you fight so hard to come back from such a big deficit, only to turn around and watch STL by a 1 game play-in vs Braves for the right to play the Philllies.....or....TB to play a 1 game play-in vs Red Sox for the right to play the Rangers.

Thats how it will work it seems. Basically, lessens the WC team since a key ARM will have to be burned....advantage jumps to Winning the Division still and not being WC clubs.

And, keep in mind, if 2 teams are tied for that 2nd WC position, there would be a play-in for the play-in.

    * What will really matter is once both leagues are 15 teams....they will have to RE-BALANCE the schedule to make sure you play everyteam in your Division (as they do now) the same amount, but more importantly you play everyone in the other League divisions the same amount.

Then the only variable (which isnt fair - but $ will drive it) is the Interleague matchups (sadly these will stay) and most will be local rivalry.

The question is the math around 162 games (if that remains) and if each Division opponent remains at 19 games each.

But for the most part the re-balance across the 14 opposing league teams will be key to improving the game and measuring who is in the WC race, etc.

I'd rather the MLB add 2 new teams to the AL and have each league with 16 teams with two 8 team divisions with the top 2 teams in each division making the playoffs instead of making the leagues both have 15 teams and adding 2 more WC teams. But if this is the way they're going to do it then I hope the next change is to add the DH to both leagues, having to suffer through watching a pitcher bat isn't very much fun.

I hope that doesn't happen. The pitchers are part of the team, they should hit. There are generally only two to three pitcher ABs per game anyway.

I'd rather watch someone that can actually hit though; to me there's no fun in watching a pitcher bat at all.

    small deals...

The Twins agreed to sign Ryan Doumit to a one-year deal, according to ESPN.com's Jerry Crasnick and Doumit's agency, Sosnick/Cobbe Sports (Twitter links). The deal, which is pending a physical, is worth $3MM and includes performance bonuses, according to Crasnick.

The Tigers and Gerald Laird have agreed to a one-year contract. The Tigers announced the deal. It's a one-year contract for $1MM, according to Jon Paul Morosi of FOX Sports (on Twitter).
