Oh I can't wait to read the next batch of stories of what a hero he is if he does win one.

Dude has a load of talent, WS #2 though, I think Boston's failures in the WS when they had Rice and Evans and company sort of devalued them a bit RF, they aren't thought of as All Timers but they were as good as anyone in the game.

I was referring to how through the media Hamilton is thought of as this hero and role model because of his past. I'm not questioning his talent by any means.

Look I'm happy the guy has his life back together but let's not turn him into a hero or role model. He did everything to himself, its not like he overcame a disease or disability or anything like that. Everything that happened to him was self inflicted.

Oh sure, why not, like the A's were once upon a time the scrap heap for the Yankees.

Hoyer going to look right into the camera and say "this was an outstanding move to acquire a quality pitcher, have to catch my flight to Chicago, see you sucke...err...reporteres later"

Yeah, 'cause positive stories about players overcoming massive problems and being out of the game are so out of place in MLB, dammit bring me more stats!

I just don't think someone like him should be put on a pedestal and made into some kind of hero. There are plenty of feel good stories that MLB can promote. From CC Sabathia, Torii Hunter or Curtis Granderson going to inner cities to try and get more African Americans kids into baseball again with the RBI program or David Robertson raising money for the people down south that had hit hard with Hurricanes or Logan Morrison raising money for lung cancer in memory of his father or Albert Pujols' work with children with Downs Sydrome or even Ryan Westmoreland's (Red Sox prospect) overcoming a major brain surgery to try to play pro ball again.

Why can't it be either or? Hamilton's struggles are just as compelling a story as any of those, and yet no superior to any them, I can recall Gooden, Strawberry and Vince Colemen constantly being in trouble and they never quite semed able to pull themselves out of it, Hamilton has managed to do so.

Purely a inter personnel struggle for him, which is kinda of the way most substance abuse problems play out, and there are millions of Americans with those same substance abuse problems, let him be their example.

I have no problem with that. My problem is how he's marketed especially towards kids. He's made out to be a role model and hero because he overcame his struggles, my issue is his struggles were his own fault and thus he shouldn't be made out to be this great guy because of it.

Apparently San Diego didn't feel it needed any compensation back to lose Hoyer and McLeod. Apparently SD's owner just loves the idea of Josh Byrnes being the GM so he didn't care if Hoyer left. If I'm a Padre fan I'm more upset about letting Hoyer and McLeod walk for nothing. Say what you want about the Gonzalez trade but Hoyer and McLeod restocked the farm system through the draft and made some nice smaller trades (Cameron Maybin). The Padres are going to miss those guys a lot.

Uhm, yeah, now that there is nothing left to giveaway, they'll be missed.

Going to work together again, how odd is that? Gosh, one would think they never parted company.

Team went from 90 wins to 73, had the same punchless offense they normally have, traded their marguis player for a couple of prospects who did not do very much (Law did amend his "top 50 prospects" to include Kelly at like 48th)

Train wreck, no other way to really describe his time in San Diego.

He has lost the All Star Game!
He has lost the ALDS Game!
He has lost the ALCS Game!
He has lost the WS Game!

Thats pretty consistent for one season, no?

That steal by Kinsler was gigantic for that win. and off one of the better throwing catchers, who put the ball perfect and was an inch maybe of getting Kinsler. Great game and ending.

It's a small sample size but yeah I agree with you that he's not a 100M dollar pitcher. I do think he'll get at least a 5 yr 75M one though from someone.

By the way, not sure where to put this but since this is the only MLB thread that's active I figured this is a good place to post so remember how we were "debating" the Padres attendance and how Adrian Gonzalez leaving was going to hurt attendance? Well attendance was actually UP from 2010. Granted it was only an 11k raise (roughly 140 more people per game or so) but the myth that he was some draw because he was a hometown guy was obviously false. Now to be fair some of that rise could be because they were good the year before which is what I said about how winning teams are the draw (except in Tampa) not the individual players (unless that player is just a once and a lifetime talent like a Barry Bonds in the early 2000s or if a player is chasing a record or milestone). But never the less him being shipped out of town did nothing towards the attendace level. Just thought it was interesting to see.

I honestly thought the same was going to happen. For years Rays fans have been harping on going out and getting someone for the fans to come see. Hell, Ive heard Gary Sheffield would raise the attendance many times....Simply not true. Maybe an extra 20 people a game would come out to see a player like that. Winning should bring fans out. Rays are in a terrible situation that I don't see getting any better anytime soon unless a drastic change is made. Which it likely won't be. I foresee us floating around competing for a little while longer and then dropping off into obscurity because of lack of funds. Then many years down the road something drastic will change, a move, a new stadium, etc. Then we will start this whole thing all over again. Its a sad situation.

Nonsense, "paid attendance" is not the same as "fans at the game" far from it, 140 extra tickets could easily be corporate sales or giveaways.

I can't see what else this ownership group can really do to draw fans in. I mean since 2008 the Rays have been one of the most exciting and successful teams in baseball. They have had a ton of star players and exciting prospects that have came up through the system from Longoria to Crawford to Upton to Shields to Price to Jennings etc. The Dome is simply a dump and in a terrible location so they obviously just have to move. Whether they can draw more fans in another part of FL is another story though. I do feel badly from that franchise but they're how a small market team should be run but they're not getting rewarded for it.

How is it nonsense? I never said paid attendance, I was simply stated the attendance numbers from Baseball Reference. Of course there could be tickets that have been bought but people don't attend (it happens with every team in every sport) but the team mostly doesn't care because the ticket bought is still money in their pocket. Sure they might be losing money on food, drinks and mech but that ticket is still paid for. Regardless attendance this year was higher than last year based on those figures.

And if you want to brush it off that the increase is due to giveaways etc then can't someone make a claim that they did it in the past too? It's not a strong argument, in my opinion, it just has too many holes. But let's just say you're right and 140 tickets per game was just handed out to people, again the same number of people saw the Padres in 2011 without Gonzalez than they did in 2010 with him. He still didn't change the attendance levels in that situation.

I brushed it aside simply because I follow the padres RF, and a 140 ticket difference is miniscule.

Rangers won a good ballgame last night by beating the cards previously untouchable bullpen, will be interesting to see if they can do it again.

It's not a series unless you win a road game. Rangers did that. Cards blew a golden opportunity to go up 2-0 in the series. It's a whole new ballgame, pun intended
