Yankees president Randy Levine told Andrew Marchand of ESPNNewYork.com that he wants general manager Brian Cashman to continue in his current role after the season, when Cashman’s contract expires. It’s the strongest indication yet that one of the game’s longest-tenured GMs is going nowhere.

"Clearly, we want him back," Levine said.

Though Cashman’s three-year deal is mere weeks away from expiring, it’s Yankee policy to wait until the offseason before discussing new deals. Cashman says he has a great relationship with ownership and confirmed that he’s interested in returning to New York, where he has been the GM since 1998.

“They know that I would like to come back and we have a good working relationship, but we'll deal with that stuff on another day," he said.

Cashman told Ian O'Connor of ESPNNewYork.com last week that there’s no better place for him than New York, while acknowledging that his job has its shortcomings. The Cubs don’t currently have a GM and though they’ve been linked to Cashman, it appears that they’ll have to search elsewhere.

The Yankees have made the playoffs in 13 of the 14 seasons that Cashman has been their GM, winning four World Series titles.
They are 97-62 this season with three regular season games to play. Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports reported earlier in the month that the Yankees and Cashman have mutual interest in a new deal.

    P.S.

Yankees GM Brian Cashman admitted this week that his meeting with Carl Crawford at last year's Winter Meetings was intended to drive up his price.

    ....

not surprised....well, surprised he claimed it outloud or admitted it publicly...but thats it.

Didn't he say this back in December already? Even Crawford said when he signed the Yankees didn't show much interest in him.

Soriano should get hit by a bus with that performance tonight. Just pathetic. I hope he has trouble sleeping at night on top of that 12 million he's stealing from the Yankees each year.

So if Texas, and Detroit end up with the same record after today, who does the Yankees play?

Texas has a 1 game better record, so as you know the Texas has to lose and Detroit has to win...

does it go by head to head?

Yes, and the Yankees would play the team with the worse record/team that lost the head to head match up.

In a perfect world, NY beats Tex (for year year) in the ALDS, and then Boston in the ALCS....but as you know, the world isn't perfect...

Seriously, you have to be a closet Sox fan:no:

....in a perfect world, Sox are sitting home for Playoffs. Seeing the SauxNation's collective faces pressed against the class wishing and hoping they could have been there is the perfect world for Yankees fan.

TB beating them in 1 game playoff, or winning tonight as Saux LOSE AGAIN - either would be perfection. Whether its TEX or DET who cares.

Damn, not only are you wanting Sox to make the Playoffs, you want them advancing to ALCS....you are bizarre.:tongue2:

Come on, admit it you secretly love the Pats or Jets too. Dont you.

I take no absolutely no joy in seeing the Red Sox get beat by anybody but the Yankees.....baseball is different to me than football, I think partly because we have seen 5 championships, I dont have the urgency to see more Yankees championships...if they come, great, I will embrace them like the others.....during the playoffs, I am as intense with the games as anybody around, because I hate failure...but if they lose a series I get over it quick.....With football I am still made about Cleveland no BS....

To me Yanks/Sox is it, thats where it ends for me, thats my World Series.....nothing in sports gets me up like Sox/Yanks ALCS....While everybody else is scared and doesn't want to face them, I kinda revel in the pressure of the 4 hour games...

Pats and Jets, I dont care if Miami faces them in the playoffs, there is no rivalry with any of those teams, even if there was a rivalry it doesn't compare to Sox/Yanks....

You are talking like a myopic madman, instant gratification only fan club president.

As an intelligent person, I want the SauxNation to fail to sniff the postseason. Every Year!

Yanks do their job - they win divisions, qualify for playoffs, and beat the best the NL has to offer, and have secured 27 Titles to date...has ZERO to do with Saux! Yanks have taken care of their own with the basics - they qualify then advance.

Now, as a closet Sox fan, perhaps you think the season begins and end with Boston, as a Yanks fan, I can tell you it doesnt, and never has.

:tongue2: (ask your dad...he sounds equally wise)

You lost your way young man, lets face it, you are scared of them...you want the easy road.......the road less traveled.....

why in God's name do I want to see NY play Tampa Bay, Texas, or Detroit in the ALCS...really?? All three of those teams I would rather go plant grass than watch a 7 game series against....especially TB.....Detroit there is some interest because my brother-in-law is from outside of there....

When for every season, as the only Yankee fan in my group of friends, lets say all you hear is baggering from them all year , so yeah I want to see NY beat them......

Joe Girardi had said he would respect the integrity of the playoff process and send his regular lineup out against Rays ace David Price.

    Girardi kept his word.

Left fielder Brett Gardner is the only regular who gets the night off; Andruw Jones will take his place.

    Also worth noting:
    • Rookie Dellin Betances will start on the mound;
    Alex Rodriguez will bat fifth, with Robinson Cano batting cleanup;
    • Rookie Jesus Montero, primarily a DH since his Sept. 1 callup, will be the catcher.

In case you've forgotten: If the Rays win tonight and the Red Sox lose to the Orioles, Tampa's in, Boston's out. If the Red Sox win and Tampa loses, it's the opposite. And if both either win or lose, there will be a one-game playoff Thursday in St. Petersburg, Fla.

    • Detek Jeter SS
    • Curtis Granderson CF
    • Mark Teixeira 1B
    • Robinson Cano DH
    • Alex Rodriguez 3B
    • Nick Swisher RF
    • Andruw Jones LF
    • Jesus Montero C
    • Eduardo Nuñez 2B
