Tony Gwynn called Jeter and supposedly told him, to stay calm and all that....and then said that the first 2990 hits are easy, the last 10 are the hard ones hahahah..... This is interesting, they could get Z from the money owed and not many propsects at all....here is a guy who is a headcase sure, but can pitch. Not having a good year this year I know, but a change of scenery, energized by a playoff run, teaming up with Rothschild again, could do wonders for him. When Z is on, he is pretty damn good.....Cashman is in Chicago this weekend so will will see what comes of it... http://espn.go.com/blog/chicago/cubs/post/_/id/4932/with-n-y-in-town-let-big-z-speculation-begin
Carlos Zambrano in the AL East just has disaster written all over it. Just stay away, especially with the amount of money still owed to him.
Sorry this is a bit late - But I can't BELIEVE they tossed Mitch Talbot for hitting A-Rod with an 87 mph fastball. He hadn't hit anyone all game, hit him in the thigh and wasn't even throwing it hard. A-Rod looked like an Italian soccer playing going down afterwards. Not a very classy series. Tex went after Carmona who stupidly responded. Acta came out and tried to cool things down and Girardi said something to rile him up - to which he then spazzed out. Not a good series for Tribe fans.
they have to do something, I thought Garcia was going to be a disaster, and Colon, and so far they held up (albeit not very well against the Sox)..... It is an option that doesnt require giving up any prospects of any worth.....I am hearing Z, Dumpster, and Kazmir as possible options....I will roll the dice with Z, not to mention he is done after next year, it isnt like a Burnett contract.....and as well he will be the number 4 starter, behind Colon moving Garcia most likely to the 5th, ot they just might put Z at 5, although that would mean Nova would go to the bully as long relief....and I like the experience Nova is getting right now....while holding his own in his first full year in the bigs... yeah either way I dont have a problem with it, if he comes or doesnt....
Oh I agree the Yankees have to do something since I really don't think Colon or Garcia will be able to pitch into September and I'm not sold on Nova but none of those guys you mentioned are going to be the answer. Especially not Kazmir who's just plain awful. I think the real problem is that there aren't going to be any real impact SPers available during the trade deadline, i.e. Cliff Lee or Roy Oswalt last year. I think there are going to be a lot of mediocre ones (i.e. Brett Myers) but impact ones just won't be there. The Yankees best bet is probably a healthy Phil Hughes.
This is interesting, Peter Gammons was on WEEI today and mentioned that the Yankees, along with a few other teams, contacted Andrew Miller (Red Sox LHP minor league pitcher who is going to start for Boston on Monday) to try and get him to opt out of his contract with the Red Sox which is clearly tempering and illegal. You have to wonder how much of that sort of thing happens as I'm sure every MLB team does it each year, especially with potential FA players.
Good sign, and you have to love Brett Gardner and what he is doing lately.....Valentine is saying move Jeter to 9 in the order when he comes back and gets his 3000th hit...I cant say that I disagree... http://sports.espn.go.com/new-york/mlb/news/story?id=6678758&campaign=rss&source=MLBHeadlines
Solid performance by Nova last night 8 strong innings, getting about all you could have hoped to get out of him, plus getting solid experience at the big league level for a full year. Good to get the first one, with Cueto going tonight.... The word is the Astros want Brett Gardner, and are dangling Bristol Myers out there......ahhhhhh no.....he is the prototypical national league pitcher who would come to the amercian league and get lit up....
Solid pitching performance by Garcia, the took the day game....night time will be difficult against Cueto....but just let him pitch, and wear him out and they will be okay....14 games over, high water mark for the year.......considering they are 1 out of 1st and 1-8 against the Sox, that isnt bad.... Good new......Tex, and A-Rod will be in the lineup tonight, as they sat out the first game.... Bad news.....they pitched Robinson, and Mo in the 1st game......
And my old man says (he went) he got the biggest standing O......loved Bernie, the year Cashman didnt sign him back, he could have played too......when Tino went deep on Cone yesterday, they panned over to Cone and he was umm.......less than thrilled, hahaha...... kudos to Torre, and NY squashing whatever beef they had too...nice to see Joe come home...
Perhaps one of the most perfect Old Timer's Days in recent memory.....Bernie, Joe, back as you say, and the tribute to Gene Monahan! Wow....great day!
Yeah except it was disappointing Derek Jeter couldn't play in the Old Timer's Day game due to his calf (yup that was an old joke but at least I didn't make a crack about Yogi having more range).
wow that was pretty bad Fink...... crazy that Jeter is still in the Top 10 in the AL in Games, AB, Runs, Hits, 2B, TB, BB, SB, OBP, AVG still.....while having medicore year...all this says is that the SS position is reverting back to the pre-roid era, of not the greatest of output offensively.....it wasnt until, A-Rod, Miggy, Jeter, and Nomar etc all camre along that it started to produce...
Even in the NL besides Reyes and Tulo the SS position is pretty bad offensive wise (I still think Hanley Ramirez is ane elite player but he's having a down year). I think part of the reason is that teams are starting to put more weight into defense and would rather have a strong glove at SS with an average to below average bat than a poor glove but a better bat, especially with how offense has decreased due to the enforcement in PEDs.
Yeah he's a pretty good player but he'll need to learn how to take a few pitches every once and awhile if he wants to really be a superstar.
Keith Oberman the outspoken broadcaster and diehard Bronx Bombers fan had been the team's in-house color commentator during Old Timers' Day for the last 11 years before being shown the door. People are suggesting it was when he took a pic of the guy relaying signs to the billvoard guy on Opening Day when it was broken... http://sports.yahoo.com/sportsminute
Interesting stat from Waldman on the radio the other day (the only thing she is good for is stats, her opinions are awful)............ Since Jeter went on the DL, Swisher and Gardner have combined for .456 OBP out of the leadoff spot, and they have won 11 out of 14...... Now I know that is a small snipet but, I wonder if Girardi continues to bat him leadoff after he comes back and gets 3000....I have always erred on the side of production, not loyalty.....
Joel Sherman of the New York Post dishes all kinds of Yankees rumors today; let's check it out. Yankees GM Brian Cashman admitted the team's weakness is left-handed pitching, but says, "I can't force it. I can't make it happen if it is not there." Another Yankees official said that a lefty would help, "But I don't think it is live or die." Sherman believes Wandy Rodriguez and Francisco Liriano might be the two best available southpaw starters, but both bring concerns. Relief-wise they could go for the Marlins' Randy Choate or consider higher-priced names in August like Brian Fuentes and Mike Gonzalez. In general, Cashman said he doesn't think he can trade for a starter better than Bartolo Colon or Phil Hughes or a reliever better than Rafael Soriano, and all three could be back in July. According to Sherman, the Yankees "have shown no interest in high-cost veterans with dubious stuff such as the Brett Myers, Carlos Zambrano, Ryan Dempster, Edwin Jackson, Livan Hernandez, and Jason Marquis." Hoping for the Yanks to acquire Jair Jurrjens or Derek Lowe? We're not sure if either is available, but Sherman says "the Yankees' policy has become pretty much to run away from Atlanta pitching after having successful Braves hurlers blow up on them." The Yankees would not offer an extension to Hiroki Kuroda, if the righty were to make that a condition of a trade. We know Kuroda will require some form of compensation. The Padres "want to get out in the market quickly" with relievers Heath Bell and Chad Qualls, writes Sherman. The Yankees, however, prefer Mike Adams, who is considered much less available.
Derek Jeter (calf) ran the bases Tuesday. Jeter continues to make strides in his ongoing recovery from a right calf strain. He ran from home to first four times, first to second three times and first to third once at the Yankees' spring training complex. The hope is that he will be ready to return to the bigs in early July. ---------------------- I post the above in a pre-emptive strike to prevent Ray Finkle from finding it and claiming Jeter cant score (stranded on base) even in rehab!!!
Nice job by the Yanks yesterday because, could you imagine if after the Yanks tell Grienke he wouldnt handle NY this offseason, and then spins a gem last night.....how that would have went over?? They (media) were waiting to pounce.....
Very encouraging. Keep it up Phil!! To get Phil, and Colon back and producing would be a nice shot in the arm.... http://twitter.com/#!/YankeesPR/status/86130790265659392
....to arms....to arms.... in other news: Luis Vizcaino suspended for 50 games for PEDs and... "I'd be shocked if I could trade for anything better than what I'm getting off the DL, both with starters in Colon and Hughes and in the bullpen with Soriano," Cashman said.
I was impressed with last season RSox club that overcame so much to fight to the end.....smoke and mirrors is my answer for this season NYY crew. Baseball is a crazy game.
This team is growing on me as the season progresses. It's arguably one of the two or three weakest teams we've fielded in 10 years and yet they are playing some scrappy, tough, winning ball. If they win it all, it will be done because of their heart more than their talent.
Jair Jurrjens? Keep dreaming. Javier Vasquez has been bad in Florida as well, but if the Yankees really want to believe Braves pitchers are coming over to sabotage them...
The list is long as far as Braves Arms that have blown up/lacked expected success for NYY following acquisition....as Sherman correctly points out in the piece..."such as Javier Vazquez, Kyle Farnsworth, Jaret Wright, Steve Karsay, Chris Hammond, Denny Neagle and Soriano blow up on them." A theme does not make a concrete statement going forward, but history can make some GMs gunshy, and they might as well look elsewhere for a fit. Personally, the best fit for the best price is probably Wandy. But dont know if that is in the cards. Cashman may be correct, the guys coming back from DL may be his best moves for near and long term. The arms in the farm will solve some questions if we survive this season vs mortgage the future for a same questionable gamble on only this season.
Cashman for once is right, there isnt anybody out there for a trade that is better than what we have right now, not obviously withstanding like a blockbuster for a big name guy....
Thing is Adam, the quality of baseball right now isnt that good.....There isnt one all out dominant team, I expect this going forward post-roid era.....back to pitching, defense, and timely hitting in the future...... This year hinges on whether NY can beat Boston.....cuz if they get past them, I am encouraged they can win it all......but as it stand Boston is so far inside of the Yankees heads it isnt even funny....
yeah. i'm actively rooting for the august/ september collapse of boston. i dont want to see them unless we prove we can beat them. their lineup has too many good lefties
The thing is, we don't have that other dominant or even consistent other pitcher than C.C. - to me a team needs that other guy to lean on and when they have that they can play well. Maybe that's just me though. I agree about this team though, it has a different feel to it. Not quite the same as the team that won 100+ games and basically rolled through the year, but the first World Series team we had in 1996. Not a GREAT team, but a great TEAM if you catch my meaning. They all had a role and they played it well. Eduardo Nunez has played out of his mind lately, and really his play is a plus moving forward for us..........but we'd better figure out a way to get some weight on him though. Without it, he'll struggle to make it through the season. He's a guy we need to keep ahold of, thats for sure, as he has a future.
