It already was, even with Venters having a (for him) down year last year. I still think two years ago was arguably the best year a pen has ever had, up until September when they all ran out of gas.

Morosi is saying that the Braves and D-Backs are discussing a deal that would send Justin Upton to the Braves, but that Arizona is asking for Simmons and that's why it hasn't been done yet.

I would LOVE J-Up, but losing Simmons would hurt, given that we really don't have an alternative... BUT GIVE ME ALL TEH UPTONZ

That's incorrect. Once a player is non tendered he becomes a FA.

They are about to infuse billions onto the club with their television deal and Kershaw is probably going to be the first $200 million dollar pitcher, they absolutely could sign both if they wanted.

I never said that they WOULD pull it off, quite the contrary, actually. All I said is could you imagine. Arguably the best two starting pitchers in the game in the same rotation. In that ballpark. Scary.

Anyone have the exact date of the Winter Meetings?

Simmons has been the hold up for weeks. Read weeks back that texas wanted to move Olt for simmons and flip simmons for just up. Olts a better prospect and atl still said no

Is a factor, why risk health+cash when you feel you can acquire a sure thing piece for the bullpen?

I'd like to keep Bourn tbh, solid all around player who does several things.

He was non-tendered today, which was expected. That's why I said he was gonna be gone.

I wouldn't say Walden is a sure thing piece but I do like his potential. Like I said numerous times they Braves probably wanted to ship Hanson out of town before his arm exploded.

My fault I thought when you said expect JJ to be gone you meant via trade and when Lucky said given he was non tendered is that still possible and you said yep.... simple misunderstanding, carry on...

RA Dickey in Nashville for the Winter Meetings...Jon Heyman saying that if no extension is reached soon then Mets will look to trade him. IMO it would be wildly unpopular but an intelligent baseball decision. If RA nets you a Bubba Starling or a Mike Olt thats not bad at all for a 38 year old on a 1 year deal.....

Rays close to signing 1B James Loney. That's such a Tampa Bay Ray move right there. Hopefully he performs more like 2012 Carlos Pena than 2011 Casey Kotchman.

Not a big fan of the Loney signing unless its a minimum salary and it's strictly as a back up/platoon.

Yea. Don't like it. I'd rather have a Pena TYPE bat at first in this lineup. We have no power outside of Longo and in a position where there's plenty of power we got the exact opposite. He's just to light hitting for my tastes.

Starting first basemen?? How is he defensively?

I always thought he would be in a platoon.....kinda risky I think...

He's average at best at 1st defensively. Word is they will also have him catcher some too so definitely expect Saltalamacchia or Lavarnway to be traded.

Need to know the $ amount for him but if it's only a 3 year deal it's probably not the worst thing in the world. The Sox need power in that line up and Napoli should do very well at Fenway.

Again short term deals are good. Much rather gamble with Gomes, Napoli etc on short term deals then overpay and give out big contracts for Hamilton/Upton etc. That's what hurt the Sox the past few years. And again I'd much rather overpay if it means getting guys on shorter term deals.

EDIT: Also Napoli doesn't have any big platoon splits so not sure why you'd think he's a platoon player.

Problem is there aren't any big power guys out there at 1st baseman except Napoli who's probably out of the Rays price. But I agree TB is very light in the line up and need to do something to upgrade.

Looks like it's just a 3 year deal with a higher dollar figure per year. With the Sox very light in the minors at 1st base, the contract length makes perfect sense.

Remember the Sox have money to burn thanks for the Nick Punto Trade, so even if the dollars per year is high the key is keeping the contract length shorter.

He will mash in Fenway.....I still think he is a risk as the everyday starter at first for the next 2 years at least, because Papi is the DH....

hey maybe they trade either Salty or Lavarnway....??

Only 13 million? Really? Wow I thought it would be in the 15 to 16 million range. That's a pretty decent contract, nice job Ben.

And yes I expected Saltalamacchia or Lavarnway to be traded before the Napoli signing, so yeah still expect one to be traded. Of course Lavarnway has options and with Napoli the Sox are pretty RHH heavy so who knows. Saltalamacchia has a lot of trade value right now.

13M is cheap for an everyday starting 1st baseman....

who else is playing 1st Fink of them?? 150 games at 1st will will certain expose your flaws if you have any....

Depends on what Napoli you get. 2 years ago Mike Napoli. Or the rest of his careers. He's very comparable bat wise to a Carlos Pena a few years ago. Who was only worth 8-10 mil. And Pena played GG caliber defense. Napoli does not. He's better with the stick. But not by a ton. Especially on a 3 year deal I would think 30-35. 13 isn't a bad a contract for him. I just said its out of Rays price. We don't go above what we think Market value is. In his case I would think around 10 a year.

I was saying to myself that Swisher could back up 1st AND play RF for the Red Sox......although RF in Fenway is vastly different than YS....

Swisher would kill 2 birds with one stone....but hey wants Werth money so there's that too.....

Personally I hope he doesn't go to the Sox because their compensation pick would be at the end of the 2nd round instead of the 1st, as the Sox 1st is protected...

Swisher is another guy I hoped TB would consider.

I suspect with the Loney signing though that's out of the realm unfortunately.

Right now they don't have a 1B unless it will be Napoli. It's possible they can platoon Napoli with Saltalamacchia behind the plate and the days when Saltalamacchia catches Napoli can play 1st for example if they keep Saltamacchia. I suspect that Napoli will catch a bit since he's more valueble as a catcher than a 1B but I can't see him catching 100 plus games a year. The majority of time he'll spend at 1st.

Offseason is far from over though so who knows what other moves the Sox will make, I just hope it's not for Swisher. I mean his bat would fit in fine with the rest of the line up but it's Nick Swisher which will make it extremely hard to root for.
