I hope Yanks know other asians beside "Hideki's" (Irabu, Matsui, and Okajima) actually exist...but then again, hitting on only 1 out of 3, perhaps they should just stay away from Asiain market for a while.

    IN OTHER NEWS.....SO CLOSE....
$13M from Pirates...frees up some nice room....dont really care about the two ML guys....(would have loved G. Jones)....but freeing up the Rotation competition, and getting $13M tossed in, is huge.

    "He-who-shall-not-be-named"!!!!! :tantrum:

    ---------------------------------------------------

P.S. Right-hander Diego Moreno is the first of the two insignificant low-level prospects going to the Yankees, reports Joel Sherman of the New York Post

P.S.S. The Pirates will pay Burnett $5MM this season and $8MM in 2013, tweets, Rob Biertempfel of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review.

And Outfielder Exicardo Cayones is the other prospect in the trade, reports Jonathan Mayo of MLB.com (via Twitter).

while Igawa, that dude from the Sox, Tazawa? now Dice-K as well, the Asian pitching market has been a bust kinda....Darvish is like the last hope I think.....actually the whole Asian market besides Godzilla and Ichiro has been a bust...am I forget anybody else?

Well done Cash as BDH said, seems like 13M and 2 scubinis.....thats fine, I cant believe he got somebody to pony up 13M....

I will say I have nothing bad to say about AJ, sometimes things dont work out.....He pitched a few good good games in the playoffs, won a championship....was he overpaid? Sure, but remember the timeframe....the Yanks coming off the Mussina as the ace years, and desperate for a true number 1, and Steinbrenner went bats$it with the money and got CC, and AJ that year....

But a good guy, seemed like a fun dude with the pies, the teamates liked him....it was just the lights of NY were too bright, much like Renteria in Boston....

I wouldnt be surprised if he goes to Pitt and deals...because that guy when on he about as untouchable as there is.....

Could be a fantasy sleeper...I bet he goes undrafted in alot of formats....

Tazawa was actually signed before he even turned pro in Japan, so he's a bit different from Matsuzaka, Igawa, Davish etc as he didn't have much experience. He's still a work in progress and lost a year of development due to TJ surgery so it's a bit early to call him a bust but I'm not expecting much from him. He seems like a bullpen arm.

As far as Asian players coming over and having success besides Matsui and Ichiro, Hideo Nomo was a pretty good MLB pitcher, ditto for Kuroda. Most of the Japanese RPers like Okajima, Suzuki (Seattle closer) had some success so not all of them have been busts. I just think baseball is different overseas so it takes the players a while to adjust, especially the pitchers. The hitters have to adjust because the pitchers in Japan don't ever throw inside nor do they see the same movement or quality of pitching there consistently.

And yes I fully expect Burnett to be pretty good in the NL, especially in the NL Central where he's going to face a lot of weak offenses. And I can't wait until Yankee fans call up WFAN complaining about how Cashman let him go to clear payroll and for 2 "bum" prospects.

They would have been equally stupid to deal him to Anaheim....so all in all....moving him to NL (for the time being), freeing up $13M, and adding two bodies to farm system isnt a bad deal at all.

Grabbing two LH bats for depth (especially Chavez for 3B depth) is nice touch.

Why would they be stupid to trade him to Philly or LAA? If they could get a better deal why not? I mean I understand if they didn't want to trade him to Tampa Bay or the Red Sox but if they could either get better players back in the deal and/or more salary relief why not?

First, I dont think Abreu is the value they needed (and dont think anything more than $13M would have been coming from PHI or LAA) over the other FA LH optioins on the table so no need to OVERPAY to get a bat like Abreu.

Plus, PHI has its own problem trying to free up $ with Blanton if they landed AJ, and LAA or PHI wasnt about to provide more than $13M plus Abreu in the deal (and we dont know what PHI would have returned in bodies, it any).

Keeping him out of AL was smart, and shipping him for $13M and two long-shot prospects to the NL via PIT vs PHI was the smartest play at the end of the day. Thats all IMO.

P.S. I know the rumor is Ibanez and Chavez, but I think Chavez is better priority with 3B option, and then frankly, I might think about rolling the dice with Vlad over Ibanez actually. Heck, Vlad hits Righties better than Damon, Matsui, or Ibanez, ironically. Vlad might be nice insurance over A. Jones as RH DH gamble if that doesnt pay off.

So at the end of the day, freeing up $13M, gives Cashman far more options than trading for Abreu, or moving him to PHI and getting less cash back, etc.

My comment was more general about getting maximum value and not caring where you trade the player than this specific case. I wouldn't mind trading a player to a team in the same division or league if I'm getting the best deal possible, obviously there are special circumstances where for example if I'm the Yankees I'm not going to trade a player to Boston or Tampa Bay right now, but any other team I'd make the trade.

I agree about best deal in principle (regardless of AL or NL or division or not), and my original comments was specific to AJ and not some hypothetical or in general view. Specific to AJ, and based on the CLE, ANA, PHI, and PIT offers, the best deal was PIT - they could NOT get a better deal from anyone else.

I love that the two trades made by Cashman were to SEA and PIT over any other team however, if you can achieve the best deal possible, and trade with LEAST of your competitive worries....great job...always!

The Yankees have agreed to terms with third baseman Eric Chavez on a one-year, Major League contract, pending a physical, according to Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com (Twitter links). The deal is worth $900K and also includes incentives, tweets Ken Rosenthal of FOXSports.com.

Cashman puts the last piece together....really did an excellent job this offseason improving depth and rotation (bats and arms)....now its up to health and performance.

Looking forward to next few weeks of spring and ultimately breaking camp to see how it shakes out.

    Great Foresight....

Joel Sherman of The New York Post reports (on Twitter) that any incentives Aardsma earns in 2012 will increase the base salary of his 2013 option by the same amount. Thus, if no incentives reached, he is still only $500k for 2013 too.

Also Montero from Ariz, who will be a free agent at the end of this year....interest me

Most non-Yankee scouts will tell you that Austin Romine is very raw behind the plate. He has a strong arm but has trouble receiving faster pitches and doesn't block the plate well with breaking balls in the dirt. And Gary Sanchez is years away.

But you're right it's extremely telling.

Hughes seems to have an edge for the #5; not sure about Garcia as a long reliever, but could be worse.....if Hughes locks down the #5, I like the rotation.

as far as the Valentine comments.....Jeter said it best, who cares?, meaningless discussion on every topic exposed from Valentine's lips for sure.

I really really like our starting 5 right now.

    CC
    Kuroda
    Nova
    Pineda
    Hughes

Rotation has a ton of potential and I really like it. And to have Garcia for depth and give guys an occasional day off is nice as well. Plus a healthy pen.

For sure.....and add in a hot spring by Betances or Banuelos and that SP depth gets deeper....Joba back by ASB....not shabby right now from the Pen side, agreed....however, health is the key (including all the way to Mo). fingers crossed!
