Several GMs will address the media to discuss what could of happened, and what failed to happen......

....at the end of all the hype, it seems like just another all-smoke no-fire trade deadline.

P.S. its possible paper work has been submitted into MLB offices so additional news on smaller deals may still come out, but all the big talk ~ big names seems to be for naught!

Jeff Allison? Is he actually playing or are people just getting Josh Hamilton fever and hoping lightning strikes twice?

    Shocked by this....amazed.....stunned!!!!

BREAKING NEWS: The Los Angeles Dodgers have acquired slugger Manny Ramirez from the Red Sox, sources tell CBSSports.com senior writer Scott Miller. Also part of the deal, the Red Sox will receive outfielder Jason Bay from Pittsburgh.

His fastball just came back this offseason. he should become "something". I doubt he lives up to his billing though.

He is playing in Jupiter with the Hammerheads, the Marlins Single A team, and doing decent. But it does appear he has turned his personal life around, which is a good thing.

The latest word is that a trade sending Manny Ramirez to the Dodgers and Jason Bay to the Red Sox may have been worked out as we await final word on any deals submitted by 4 ET.

The Dodgers swooped in at Thursday's trade deadline and acquired one of the greatest sluggers of this generation, acquiring Manny Ramirez from the Red Sox as part of a three-way deal in which Boston acquired outfielder Jason Bay from the Pittsburgh Pirates, sources told CBSSports.com's Scott Miller. In return for Bay, sources say, Pittsburgh will receive right-handed pitcher Craig Hansen and outfielder Brandon Moss from the Red Sox. Also, the Dodgers will send third baseman Andy LaRoche and right-handed pitcher Bryan Morris to the Pirates. Hansen was Boston's first-round pick in the 2005 draft and Morris was the Dodgers' first-round pick in the 2006 draft.

No qualms about LaRoche going, plus, he's now reunited with Adam. Morris was a prospect I had eyes on. Shame to see him go.

Peter Gammons description of Seattle as the biggest losers makes sense. Texas and Oakland are loaded with young talent, the Angels are good and Seattle is for some reason holding on to their overpriced and old players. Says if they dont realize where the team is at soon they could be in last place for 4 or 5 years. :)

Moss is a nice player, a 4th OFer type but he hustles and tries. Hansen has the stuff but he just looks like the 2nd coming of Kyle Farnsworth.

Ok, so the Trading Deadline has passed.....but that doesnt mean additional moves wont happen.

    Some simply rules to remember:

Any player can be put on waivers by his team, and the player does not need to be informed.

Other teams have the chance to make a claim on the player during a 47 hour window.

If the player is claimed, the team that placed him on waivers has the option of pulling him back. If the team pulls him back they can't trade him.

If his team decides not to pull him back:
Option 1: His team can work out a trade with the team that claimed him. Any player involved in the trade who is on a 40 man roster must go through waivers first.
Option 2: His team can just dump him and his salary on the team that claimed him, getting no player in return.
Option 3: No one claims him, and his team is free to trade him to any team.

If more than one team places a claim on a player, the winning claim is awarded based on worst record or the league the claiming team is in.

    Additional Info for emphasis:

No player can get traded after July 31 without being placed on trade waivers.

Unlike outright waivers, August trade waivers are NOT irrevocable. In other words, if a team places a player on trade waivers, and another organization places a claim on that player, they can take him off waivers if they don't want to lose him or trade him.

Once a player is placed on trade waivers, the other 29 organizations have under 48 hours during which to place a claim.

If a player is claimed by another organization, one of two things can happen:
    a) the player can be traded to (or simply given to) the claiming organization only or..
    b) the player can be pulled off of waivers by the originating Club.

Any trade with the claiming Club has to be consummated within 48 hours.

If a player is claimed on trade waivers, and the originating Club pulls that player off of waivers, he CANNOT be traded for the remainder of the season unless... the originating Club puts the player on trade waivers a second time. If they do this, however, the waivers become irrevocable so any claim would result in the automatic assignment of the player to the claiming team.

If a player goes unclaimed, he can be traded to any other team at any time.

Phillies GM Pat Gillick wanted to pick up one more starting pitcher, a lefthanded reliever, and maybe a hitter (Manny Ramirez) before yesterday's deadline, but he did not make a deal.

Gillick told Todd Zolecki of the Philadelphia Inquirer that he was close on a three-team deal that would've brought a #4-type starter to the Phillies. He had an agreement with one of the other two teams. Gillick believes this mystery starter will not clear waivers this month. It's unclear who the starter would've replaced, since Gillick already picked up Joe Blanton. Maybe Brett Myers was in the failed deal.

Tossing out a few #4-type starters who may have been available: Tim Redding, Odalis Perez, Jason Marquis, Jarrod Washburn, Paul Byrd, Josh Fogg, and Livan Hernandez. Which is these pitchers wouldn't make it through waivers? Perhaps Redding, Perez, and Fogg on account of their low salaries.

Doesn't seem like Gillick would've needed to involve a third team to get any of them though.

    Anyone have any guesses?

Report: Yankees place employees on leave ~ Several MLB Teams invloved in scandel

NEW YORK (TICKER) —The New York Yankees have placed several employees who scouted in the Dominican Republic on leave pending an investigation by Major League Baseball into the signing of prospects, the New York Times reported on Tuesday.

The investigation, which includes the FBI, is looking into whether Yankees’ prospects in the Dominican Republic were forced to kick back some money from their signing bonuses to team employees.

The Times reported that New York is among six to eight teams that are being looked at as part of the investigation and ESPN.com reported on Monday that when the investigation is complete, it will implicate “roughly 20 players on a handful of teams.”

An MLB source told the web site that those teams will include the Yankees, Boston Red Sox, Washington Nationals and Chicago White Sox.

Investigators have been in the Dominican Republic for the past four months, the Times reported, after the White Sox uncovered evidence that members of their front office were taking money from players in return for signing them.

ESPN.com, citing unnamed sources, stated in its report that the FBI currently has focused the continuation of its probe on fired White Sox official David Wilder, Nationals general manager Jim Bowden and special assistant Jose Rijo.

The web site said that Bowden “previously confirmed to ESPN that he had spoken with federal authorities but insisted he has done nothing wrong, and that FBI agents had asked him nothing about his own activities.”

The ESPN.com report also linked the newest revelation to last week’s firing of Red Sox Dominican scouting supervisor Pablo Lantigua, who was let go after allegedly skimming signing bonuses.

I actually heard this rumor a while ago BDH. I heard it from a player in the Red Sox organization who happened to be dating a friend of mine. Apparently its pretty common because these guys are so afraid of going back they'll do just about anything.

What's not reported are what happens to these guys if they dont make it. Ive heard stories of depression, drug abuse, and even suicide. All teams involved in this scandal should lose MULTIPLE draft picks. Also, If I were the commish I would put said teams on probation, monitoring their signings of foreign players.

Here are the NL players who might clear waivers this month, generally excluding injured players.

Phillies: Brett Myers, Adam Eaton, Tom Gordon, Geoff Jenkins, So Taguchi. Maybe Taguchi could go in a minor deal. Myers makes $12MM next year, but the Phillies would probably prefer to keep him and get him back on track.

Marlins: Wes Helms, Mark Hendrickson. It wouldn't be surprising to see one of these two guys moved.

Mets: Johan Santana, Carlos Beltran, Carlos Delgado, Pedro Martinez, Luis Castillo. We know the stars aren't going anywhere. Pedro and Castillo are especially likely to clear but aren't coveted players.

Braves: Mike Hampton, Mark Kotsay. The Braves would have to eat all of the remaining $4.6MM to move Hampton.

Nationals: Austin Kearns, Dmitri Young. Both are signed through '09, and teams won't want to take that on.

Cubs: Alfonso Soriano, Jason Marquis, Bob Howry, Scott Eyre, Jon Lieber. Marquis still has $11.8MM coming to him through '09.

Brewers: Eric Gagne, Jeff Suppan, Ray Durham, Bill Hall, David Riske, Guillermo Mota. The Brewers have some undesirable contracts on the books.

Cardinals: Chris Carpenter, Jason Isringhausen, Adam Kennedy, Cesar Izturis. In general, most contenders probably won't be shipping off veterans.

Astros: Miguel Tejada, Carlos Lee, Kaz Matsui, Randy Wolf, Jose Valverde, LaTroy Hawkins, Mark Loretta, Brad Ausmus. Multiple candidates to clear waivers, though the Astros still have their eye on the prize.

Reds: Adam Dunn, Francisco Cordero, Bronson Arroyo, Jeremy Affeldt, Corey Patterson, Javier Valentin, Matt Belisle, Josh Fogg. I'd be surprised to see Dunn get through waivers unclaimed, even though the Reds still owe him $3.9MM. Keeping him now makes the most sense anyway.

Pirates: Freddy Sanchez, Jason Michaels, Jose Bautista, Chris Gomez, Doug Mientkiewicz. The Pirates don't have any massive, ugly contracts on the books. Sanchez's remaining $7.9MM through '09 is the worst.

Diamondbacks: Randy Johnson. Nothing too ugly on the books here aside from the Eric Byrnes contract, which runs through 2010.

Dodgers: Manny Ramirez, Andruw Jones, Jason Schmidt, Rafael Furcal, Jeff Kent, Nomar Garciaparra, Juan Pierre, Angel Berroa, Pablo Ozuna. I'm sure the Dodgers wouldn't mind unloading Jones or Pierre to clear up the outfield a bit.

Rockies: Todd Helton, Kip Wells, Yorvit Torrealba, Willy Taveras, Cory Sullivan, Glendon Rusch. Helton's back is still bothering him, not that there'd be interest anyway.

Giants: Barry Zito, Randy Winn, Dave Roberts, Omar Vizquel, Rich Aurilia, Brad Hennessey, Kevin Correia, Tyler Walker. Brian Sabean should be active in trying to unload a few of these contracts.

Padres: Greg Maddux, Trevor Hoffman, Tadahito Iguchi, Brett Tomko, Wil Ledezma. If the Dodgers do try to acquire Maddux, it's possible another team could claim him just to block the trade.

Here are the American League players who could clear waivers this month:

Rays: Trever Miller, Jonny Gomes. Gomes is already earning $1.275MM this year; he might be a non-tender candidate after the season. Miller is earning $2MM. Both are having poor seasons.

Red Sox: Jason Varitek, Julio Lugo, Mike Timlin, Alex Cora. These players should pass through waivers unclaimed, but no one will want to trade for them. Lugo has $20.8MM remaining on his contract.

Yankees: Jason Giambi, Derek Jeter, Bobby Abreu, Johnny Damon, Ivan Rodriguez, Carl Pavano. Many of the Yanks' high-priced stars could clear waivers, but trading them wouldn't make sense. Pavano could be moved in the right situation.

Blue Jays: Scott Rolen, Vernon Wells, Lyle Overbay, Gregg Zaun. The Jays don't seem likely to attempt to unload any of these contracts, except maybe Zaun. Jon Heyman believes A.J. Burnett could also slip through waivers.

Orioles: Aubrey Huff, Melvin Mora, Ramon Hernandez, Jay Payton, Jamie Walker. It's not hard to envision most of these guys clearing waivers, and maybe a few salary dump deals can be worked out. Huff's .912 OPS ranks 10th in the AL, and he has about $10.5MM left on his contract through '09. I could see a team claiming him.

Twins: Michael Cuddyer, Mike Lamb, Adam Everett. These players should all clear waivers. Lamb and Everett could become DFA candidates.

White Sox: Jim Thome, Ken Griffey Jr., Paul Konerko, Jose Contreras, A.J. Pierzynski, Juan Uribe, Mike MacDougal. The Sox have plenty of high-priced vets who could make it through waivers. Konerko would be tough to move given his poor performance and 10-and-5 rights.

Tigers: Gary Sheffield, Edgar Renteria, Kenny Rogers, Todd Jones, Dontrelle Willis, Nate Robertson. The Tigers are seven games out in the AL Central; a few weeks from now they might look to get some money off the books.

Royals: Jose Guillen, Jimmy Gobble, Ross Gload. Gobble and Gload don't seem likely to help a contender, while the Royals apparently want to keep Guillen. Jon Heyman believes Mark Grudzielanek would clear.

Indians: Paul Byrd, David Dellucci, Jamey Carroll. Byrd has almost $2.5MM left on his deal, but we could still see a team put in a claim. Jon Heyman thinks Byrd will clear waivers.

Angels: Garret Anderson, Gary Matthews Jr., Justin Speier. The Halos have some questionable contracts, but trades are not expected.

Rangers: Kevin Millwood, Vicente Padilla, Michael Young, Frank Catalanotto, Marlon Byrd. It wouldn't be surprising to see Catalanotto and/or Byrd moved this month. Padilla is owed more than $17MM through '09. If a team claims that contract maybe the Rangers should let him go.

Athletics: Eric Chavez, Emil Brown. An August deal seems unlikely for the A's.

Mariners: Carlos Silva, Jarrod Washburn, Miguel Batista, Jose Vidro, Kenji Johjima, Miguel Cairo. All kinds of bad money here. Washburn has another $13.45MM coming through '09, but he might be claimed. Jon Heyman believes Adrian Beltre would also clear waivers.
