They can now franchise Flynn. Let's hope Philbin had some sort of an arrangement not to poach coaches if they let Flynn come to us. Makes Flynn a lot more expensive in terms of money and now draft picks. http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2012/02/22/packers-finley-work-out-two-year-contract/
Yeah, if they can swing it financially and find a buyer, which I'm sure they could. It worked out for NE did it not?
Green Bay even with the cap carry over from last year is only about $9 million and change under the cap. That was before Finley's signing. If Miami can't afford to tag Soliai....there's no way Green Bay can afford to tag Flynn.
http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2012/02/22/finley-deal-frees-up-franchise-tag-for-packers/ Below the belt
pack tag flynn, jets sign manning, colts draft luck, redskins draft RGIII. we're left to reach for tannehill or roll with moore
I'll do you one worse: Packs tag Flynn, Redskins sign Manning, Colts draft Luck, Browns draft RGIII, Seahawks draft Tannenhill, Jets draft Weeden.
and what was he traded for? a 2nd rounder. Surely Flynn is valued at least as highly. How many NFL wins did Sam Bradford have before the Rams used a #1 pick on him and like $70 million? less than Flynn? Just sayin. If it can happen with Cassell and any rookie QB who's never played an NFL snap, it can just as easily happen with Flynn. All a new team has to do is pre-negotiate a contract that Flynn agrees to, he's traded, and GB is off the hook for the franchise amount, no?
Twitter abuzz with "Packers to franchise Flynn". But no real source yet. Also some speculation about the Packers may already have a suitor for Flynn. Some have thrown out there that maybe it's the Browns with it's lower 1st round pick which would be a positive sign for the possibility of RG3.
Again folks....Green Bay is only $9 million under the cap and that was BEFORE Finley's signing. They'd have to shed, re-work a lot of contracts just to attempt to do this. They wouldn't be able to do anything in free agency.
Stop bringing reason and logic to the conversation, it has no place here. The Packers are not tagging Flynn. They would have to guarantee him the $14 million and THEN try to flip him. The market for the guy is very limited as it is. If they tag him and sign him I'd tell them to piss up a rope and enjoy having their back up quarterback making more than their starter and reigning MVP makes. How do you think THAT will go over with Rodgers?
It would be awesome if they franchised Flynn and no one traded for him, would serve them right. Honestly if he costs draft picks then I have to wonder if its worth it, the whole reason it seemed like a great idea is that it would only cost money to sign him.
If you believethat Flynn is a franchisable QB is 14 mllion and a 2nd rd pick really too expensive of a price to pay? I'm not saying that I believe GB is gonna tag him, or that I am convinced that the Dolphins are even all that intereted in him, but if they do, and they are interested, the asking price isn't that far out of line.
Everybody still happy about that pointless winning streak that dropped us all the way down to 8 or 9?Start out 0-7 and still aren't going to get a franchise qb this franchise is cursed.
If your scenario becomes reality, the Dolphins will still be looking for their future QB in the years to come. I agree that Manning will not end up in Miami and that the Dolphins will not make the trade of draft picks necessary to move up and get RG3. That leaves Flynn as the only option, if Philbin is sold on him as an NFL QB. If Philbin is not that high on Flynn and the Dolphins decide not to go after him, that will leave the Dolphins with really no options left to select a possible franchise type QB. Tannehill, Weeden, and all the other QB's after Luck and RG3 will be no better then mediocre starters in the NFL or backups. I think that Matt Moore will be the starter in 2012 and that the Dolphins will very possibly still be trying to fix the QB position when the 2013 draft comes around next year.
If I'm Flynn and I got tagged, I'm signing the tag immediately... sitting back on my couch... and putting my feet up. 14mil to be a backup? Ya, I'll take that. And the Pack can't afford to pay that. Call their bluff Flynn and kill their leverage...
Well, you're right that it's very possible we won't get a franchise guy and we might be cursed, but I still wouldn't have wanted them to tank the season...that just goes against everything that is right... What I'm happy about tho, is that we found that we MAY have another option if one of the QBs we've been bantering about don't pan out... MMoore may not be a franchise guy but we've seen much, much worse here (and recently)... The thing is, Flynn may not be a franchise guy either...in fact if I had to pick, I'd say the ONLY guy we could possibly have gotten this past year that fits that bill is Luck and even he still has to prove that he's the next Manning... But no, I'm fine with how the season went, even tho we didn't get the 1st overall pick... Think about it, 2007 was much worse...we DID get the #1 overall pick and there wasn't a clear franchise guy available...
No thanks. If they tag Flynn, let em keep him. Already seen this show with Spielman giving up a second for Feely who'd played more games than Flynn.
Exactly! If I was Flynn I'd also tell Green Bay that I'll only sign a new deal with the team of my choice. Then the team of choice can basically give whatever they want for Flynn. If GB doesn't like it they can pay the 14.5 million.
Just a squirrel?!?!? I will set a whole jets fan family on fire just for being a jets fan! Just kidding (for legal purposes)
I will be shocked if the Packers franchise Flynn. They don't have the room and can't pay the backup more than the starter. I have more interest in Flynn than any other attainable QB out there. I want nothing to do with Manning. Until proven otherwise he is damaged goods and unfortunately that will not be known until long after free agency has kicked in. If Philbin believes in and wants Flynn we should get him. He makes the most sense. Already has a working relationship with the headcoach and knows the system. even if you do rent Manning for 3 years and he can play he doesn't fit what is sure to come in Miami and then were starting these Qb threads all over again. To be fair, even if we do end up with Flynn we really don't know much more about how good he can be anymore than Mannings health. I just don't think we can pass up on Flynn to wait and see if Manning can be healthy or not.
Philbin may just think Moore is a better prospect than Flynn. Maybe he doesn't bite on Flynn for that reason, but people will say Flynn is not good if he does that.
No way, Flynn is going to get around the same deal as Kolb I'd bet. Kolb contract 7/29/2011: Signed a six-year, $65 million contract. The deal contains $12 million guaranteed, including a $10 million signing bonus and Kolb's first-year base salary. Annual $500,000 workout bonuses are available throughout the contract's life. 2012: $1 million (+ $7 million option bonus due 3/17), 2013: $9 million (+ $2 million roster bonus due in March), 2014-2016: $10 million, 2017: Free Agent Looking at that, Kolb is getting a minimum of $20.5M even if he ****s the bed this year. If not and the Cards stick with him in 2013 then he's over $30M. Flynn should fire his agent if he's telling him to sign anything right now.
if anyone thinks Flynn wants to be tagged and take a chance of sitting on the bench another year your nuts
Well if they can get a 2nd round draft pick out of it, it might be worth it to them. They are a super bowl ready team, adding an extra talent to the o-line or defense could be enticing for them.
