The one highlight played consistently was of Gholston beating Long for a sack - the only one Long gave up all season - but Tressel said that wasn't the only play in which Gholston bettered Long. There just wasn't a sack to show for the other ones. It was part of the larger point Tressel wanted to make: The reason Gholston's sack and tackle numbers fluctuated was that his role in Ohio State's 4-3 defense wasn't always the same. For example, Ohio State occasionally had the speedy Gholston drop into coverage. link http://www.sun-sentinel.com/sports/football/pro/dolphins/ny-spjets295667283apr29,0,5701816.story
A little rose colored glasses involved there maybe ? Gholston is great.......after he takes a nap and wakes up. I will take consistency over flash any time.
We're going to get to see them over and over against each other, so both will have additional shots to make the point.
A non-biased person (from one of the networks) said if you watch the whole game, Gholston dominated someone else, not Long. I didn't watch the game so I can't comment.
Most of the time I would agree with you, but I'm fine with this guy taking a play off now and then if he continues to do what he did at the college level. No player is perfect and few players completely dominate the game. If Gholston gets us 10+ sacks a year and isn't a liability the rest of the time he's on the field then he'll turn out to be a great pick.
cameron heyward, number 97 for OSU abused jake Long three times, in those highlights, with a straight bull rush...... put big Jake flat on his back twice...
and that's why we shouldn't get rid of jt!! 10 sacks is a 'decent' year for him........6th overall imo should be dominate.....10 sacks is not enough productivity. but with the jets draft history they would be happy with juan huron at WR with that pick. lol
I think you have to look at it like this. Long gave up one sack the entire year and it was to a top 6 DE/OLB or whatever Gholston is. Then supposedly he was dominated for the entire game. There's a vast difference between saying long got dominated by lesser talent and long got dominated by top talent. Top D talent is supposed to dominate the top lineman, that is why they make the top dollars that they do. Look at DE's like Freeny, Jared Allen, and even our Jason Taylor. Throughout the course of their career they have beaten top lineman, heck they have even embarassed a few of them. So in retrospect we have to realize that long will get beaten for a sack every once in awhile, and may be dominated on an occassion. It happens to the best tackles, and right now long is only a rookie. So be patient dolfans, and don't react too harshly if he has a bad game or gives up a sack.
Man I was so terrified from the reports that we were going to talk to Gholston's agent if Long didn't get done (a report out now says it was actually Chris Long). Sorry, but this guy is no sack artist. He got half of his sacks in two games against programs that were mere shadows of their former selves. What was he doing the other 8 or 9 games with top defenders all around him? Better yet, where did he go in the BCS game? Please, this guy wasn't even the best player on the OSU defense. Sorry for the harshness here, but man, was I worried he was gonna be a Dolphin. Whew!
You're right...10 sacks for Gholston would be a 'decent' year. It would be a good year for most players, but Gholstons ceiling is just that high. I can't wait for the opening day match-up...it can't get here fast enough.
Gholston beat Jake once with an outside speed rush...and that was the only time I saw them matched up in that clip...
The clip was very telling and VG had great success on the right side but that was college. When the Jets put him on the right side against Miami in the opener this year he will be facing Vernon Carey. I don't think he will be as good but we shall see , won't we.
you and I can agree on something, and its your last statement jets. 1st game of the season = HUGE anticipation!!!!!!!!!! i think i just pee'd myself haha, like us dolphin/jet fans needed another sub-story to argue about? and discuss!!! haha i love it!!!
Not sure if you watched the game but Gholston was doubled almost every pasing play that game. Bottom line is he DID dominate Jake Long more than anyone ever has, he created pressure no matter where he lined up. I said the same things that article did before the draft so its not news to me. He bullied Jake Long, but I hope he never does again.
i'm not too concerned about it. Long isn't a finished product by any means, which just goes to show you how much difference there is between the college game and the NFL; a 4-year starter at a major program, All-American, various award winning-left tackle still has a lot of technique to work on, and needs to spend a lot of time with his coaches. but that's the way it is with every prospect. bottomline, i have faith in his athletic ability and willingness to learn to play the game as an elite player at the next level, and the faith in our coaching staff to get him to that point.
Gholston gave Long the most trouble. The thing with Gholston was once he got locked in with Jake he could never disingaged. Btw Heyward and Wilson will probably be better than Gholston as Defensive ends and thats down right scary. I say this because they understand football better than Gholston.
Gholston never had anything but a Bull Rush or Speed rush. Gholston is seriously raw. I wouldn't say he was dominated because Gholston did preasure the QB quite a bit.
