Hey guys, As my name suggests, I'm a Ravens fan and see that there is already a thread about Beck leaving Miami, but I just wanted to get everyone's opinions on Beck and what you think we (Baltimore) should expect from him. I liked him a lot coming into the league and was hoping to land him in the Draft if he fell to us, but since that didn't pan out and he never got a starting job with the Fins I pretty much stopped following him. What does he bring to the table for us? Should Flacco get hurt, would he be a better replacement than Troy Smith? Also, why was he never given a chance to start in Miami? Thanks for any input!
Hi and welcome. Relax and enjoy our home. I'm sure all the guys will come in and give you all the info you need. Their a good bunch and very informed. We welcome visitors from other teams for good, friendly posting.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Beck_(American_football) He started his rookie year when we went 1-15. Cam Cameron felt the pressure after like an 0-7 start to put him in and struggled. Took a lot of sacks and threw bad interceptions. I believe his psyche was dammaged from having a bad offensive line. We lost our only offensive weapon in ronnie brown and the rest is history. Many fans wont miss him,(because of Chad Henne) but we wish him the best of luck. edit: oh yea, he fumbled the snap MANY times! Just remembered all of those. haha
he come out of BYU with alot of promise and got thrown int5o the fire way too early.i hope john the best and he needed a fresh start. here is a nice little video of john [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MflFK7Q0o9E"]YouTube - John Beck draft day[/ame]
He's shellshocked from 07. He fumbled a LOT. Maybe he'll recover but IMO Troy Smith will probably be the backup over him.
With Beck you get an older player but a smart QB, a mature family man, and a very hard worker. That endeared him to many Fin fans, and most of us explicitly hope he succeeds. He was at an automatic disadvantage here with the new front office since he was on the small side. They immediately got two of their own guys in 2008, dropping him to third string. Now they got their third. The writing was always on the wall after Cameron left. Nevertheless, bad things always seemed to happen to the team when he was in the game, he was apparently not a great huddle leader, and by the end of his time in Miami, we all imagine his confidence must have been completely shot. It was a strange turn for him, since he enjoyed a very successful college career and Cam (love or hate him) knows quarterbacks about as well as anyone in the league. We still don't know exactly what happened in 2007, besides being on a bad team. There may have been some issues with taking snaps under center since he played out of the shotgun a lot in college, lots of silly fumbles. So he's talented, but unlucky and has very little confidence. He's poor man's Joey Harrington at the moment. To be successful, he probably needs years of backing up and spot starting to get it all back, but by then he'll be 32-33. I wouldn't expect much out of the gate with Beck, or too much at all. A solid backup type, like Sage Rosenfels was, might be his ceiling.
Eh, Beck is a guy who the game never slowed down for RavensD, he has tools and he will wow in preseason, he just never really shined in practices for us and he was deep sixed last Training Camp and pretty much never heard from again until he was cut.
He's going to be a career clipboard holder IMHO. OTOH, you got him for nothing, whereas we wasted a second round pick on him.
Ouch...I kind of was getting this impression and you've confirmed that. It's frustrating to see that. We can relate as well, Boller had all the physical tools but absolutely lacked the mental capacity that is necessary. But this also surprises me, because I recall Beck was very intelligent and had "football smarts" coming out of college.
Well, keep in mind Beck was Cam's boy, Cameron thought the world of Beck and Cam is a good developer of Qb's, so who knows with him?
I think you got an excellent QB, as good as the one we kept but with a more accurate throwing arm. I was looking for the Dolphins to pick up Flacco in the draft but they let him slide & picked up Henne. Obviously, Pacells & company knew something I didn't. They never consult me on these things. Only time will tell. I believe the Ravens got an excellent player from Miami. By the way, I'm originally from Baltimore. I became a Dolphin fan the day the Colts slipped out of town in the middle of the night headed for Indianapolis & Shula took command of the Miami Dolphins. Good luck until we have to play each other again.
Honestley, I can see him beating Troy Smith for the backup QB spot. Either way, pray that Flacco doesn't get injured.
I agree that the game never slowed down Beck, but its not due to a lack of intelligence or hard work. I think he's one of those guys that just needs to understand everything before he can really shine. In college, he looked pretty bad early on before coming into his own. I would be concerned about his confidence though b/c he's had a rough go of things. I think he's a guy the team will have to be patient with but given enough time I believe he's got the talent to be a very good starter.
Posters are mentioning his age, but I wouldn't worry about that If I were you. Some Qbs as old as he is became successful in the NFL.
That is so ironic! I lived in Tampa as a kid and was originally a Fins fan because back then Marino was my idol and I couldn't stand the Bucs. Moved to Baltimore area as a teen and when the Ravens came along I jumped ship.
small world & welcome to our forum. you might have some difficulties in mixing up defenses after the 2009 season begins. the Dolphins are well on the RavenRoad to defensive dominance. by 2010, the team will be irrecognizable. We will Contend in 2010! & this year no one will look forward to playing us twice. I guarantee it.
I didn't realize that it was a ravens fan who started the thread, and i was like, wtf? You are 2 years late buddy. haha Alot of people here will bad moth him, but they will have a point. Bottom line, the kid loves the game, so i think he will have a good career 2nd string.
Bottom line, he's a better than average rookie quarterback who got thrown to the wolves way to early in sheer desperation by a coaching staff who were also absolutely equally desperate to have anything resembling an offensive team - which they did not - in the very nearly vain hope of having a win during the most abysmal season this franchise has ever endured. I don't blame him for that. Who knows what he can do on a team that has leadership, stability, and a whole lot more strength to protect him from the ravening defenders who chewed the 2007 Dolphins like chewing gum at a little league game.
Troy Smith has shown the ability to protect the football well, that is something Beck did not do here in Miami. He is not as bad as his stat line while here but honestly I think he is a system QB.
i'd like to add that when he was "thrown to the wolves" it was behind a very pouris o-line and mostly in inclimate weather..a monsoon,a blizzard(so to speak) and once against one of the top d's in the league. that coupled with head scratching topsy-turvey snaps in practice(meaning a few days cleo got most reps and then beck a few and so on) he never really got comfortable or found his groove. you can blame some of his fumbles on lack of comfort with the center but not all of them. so have you hever seen the burger king commercial where the guy says he has small hands and b-k will only make them look smaller? well that was john. get him comfortable with a solid line, give him a good football weather day and maybe just maybe the "deer in headlights"look will dissapear and a solid qb will emerge.
Beck will be the 2nd string, he is better than Troy Smith, he was thrown to the wolves here when Cam caved in to the fans calling for Beck when he wasn't ready yet.
Beck was dealt some ****ty cards, IMO. Considering he took snaps with possibly the worst Dolphins team in history, we should keep some things in perspective. His offense line sucked, they had a rookie starting at center in Satele and Vernon Carey at left tackle… We had some no names as well. Only ONE member of the offense line from 2007 is still on the team.. Mr. Vernon Carey. Ronnie Brown went down with an ACL tear before Beck was given the nod. Ricky Williams made it three plays into the 2007 season before be stomped by Timmons from Pittsburgh. He was handing the ball off to Samkon freakin’ Gado. Chris Chambers was traded to the Chargers and Marty Booker was proving that he shouldn’t be starting anymore. Ted Ginn Jr. was inserted into the line-up as a rookie and no one could expect him to be anything remotely close to a #1 WR by this point. That was John Beck’s opportunity to start for the Dolphins. I don’t think even Dan Marino himself would have looked like too good of a quarterback with players like those. From that offense, only seven players are still on the team now. What does that tell you? Not that Beck was really given a fair shake in 2008 either, Chad Pennington came in and was crowned the starter from day one. Not that I disagree with that, but it is what it is. If Beck is given a shot elsewhere, he may be able to turn some heads. Until then, Beck is a 2nd round bust that was never really given a chance.
Beck has reacted poorly to high pressure situationzs, but I believe it was because he was thrown in ill=prepared and BEck is a compulsive student of the game. he's very smart and to throw him into the deep end in '07 without teaching him the strokes first really screwed up his comfort level out there. I honestly believe that last year was great for Beck. He got to sit and learn under Chad Pennington, who takes a similar, cerebral approach to the game. I also think Chad probably helped John deal with his mental setbacks. PLus, we won the division last year, so Beck now knows how it feels to be in a winning locker room. I think John Beck has a bright future, to be honest. He is most similar to a Trent Green. He will take awhile to develop, but I could see him entering a game sometime in late 2009 or in 2010 after the starter goes down, and him being so damned good that he wins the starting job shortly thereafter. At worst, you got a very good back up QB, imo. At best, he will be a very good starter for the 2011 season.
He does have football "smarts". That's not the problem Padre is referring to. He's very cereberal, almost TOO cereberal. Once the game does slow down, his mental sharpness will shine through. We've seen this sort of thing before with guys like Gannon, Garcia, Brad Johnson, etc. He's a late bloomer who wil NOT be outworked. Having time to marinade under Cam's tutelage is what he needed fromt the beginning. If things finally "click" for him, he could be something special with that rifle of an arm and quick release.
RavensD, welcome, we are happy that you've joined us. IMHO you have a Diamond that only needs polishing. As StLouisFinFan stated John will not be out worked and will always give 110%. While Im sure that Flacco is your starter for years to come I really believe that Johnny can and will beat out Smith. And if nothing else will be a great value at the end of the year for the Ravens. If Flacco gets hurt and John gets a chence to show his stuff I don't think you will be disappointed. **My secret hope is that John comes back and beats the poop out of us, we shall see. P.S. Please come back and give us your thoughts after seeing John for yourself. I'm sure it will be an interesting read.
You have a player that has the tools to be very good. That's if he can get over being thrown into the fire behind a line that could not pass protect to save their own lives. He was getting killed within 1.5 seconds of taking the snap so many times that he was shell shocked and never seemed to recover from it. For the price, he is worth the look for you guys.
Here is a gif compilation I made of him during his 2007 exhibition season. You can see his carelessness with the football as has been mentioned .I do believe he will turn out to be better than Troy Smith. Beck had a huge fan base in Miami before he ever threw a pass. Personally I never understood why. He's a short QB who plays even smaller. He'll never be a QB who can put the team on his shoulders. He's a guy who's accurate up to twenty yards but floats the deeper throws. He gets nervous when things don't go according to plan and it lead him to a meltdown when he was here. The kind of run heavy offense you run in baltimore is probably the best chance for him. If you guys cut him he's probably out of the league. Troy Smith should win the 2nd string battle but cameron likes beck for some reason so who knows
WOAA! Hold on there, buddy. I like John Beck. But if we play him, I hope we own him like the Jets owned him, lol.
Great maturity, professionalism, and atheticism. Got thrown into a bad situation with cam the first time and should be handled with care. Sky's the limit for him.
RavensD you will be hating John Beck in no time. He's a human turnover machine, he has no confidence in the pocket, he has a case of happy feets, veterans on this team didn't like him and he is not a true leader of men. He's a white Ray Lucas.
Exactly! John Beck couldn't beat out Josh McCown in TC last year. That's really all you need to know. We got lucky the Jets got Favre and Pennington fell into our laps. The only reason we kept Beck and got rid of McCown was because we at least got something for McCown. Edit: From what we saw of Troy Smith in 2007, which Ravens team wasn't much better than the 2007 Dolphins, he was a lot better than Beck in regular season games
Welcome... IMO, he doesnt have anywhere close to what it takes to be evena 2nd stringer. I think he belongs moreso in a 3rd stringer role. I was an avid Beck fan until this last years training camp. for just about all of the 2008 offseason he worked exclusivley with david lee, our QB coach, throwing roughly 10,000 balls even before TC started. All together during that offseason he must have thrown around 13,000 balls, but unfortunately, the practice did not help. We had McCown, Henne and Beck in last years TC and he was by far the last on the DC. Although for the most part I think he has a strong arm and at times a great spiral, it seems he has no pocket awareness and can be easily forced into making mistakes. The worst thing about him though is his propensity to fumble... especially snaps... In 2007 he took 107 snaps and had 7 fumbles in 5 games (5 lost). That equates to roughly 20 fumbles/year... I believe half of those were snaps... those woes continuned into the 2008 offseason as he fumbles a snap at least once during the preseason... I wish him luck but I personally do not see the talent, which is probably why he only recieved a 1 year contract. Troy Smith IMO is the better of the two.
He reminds me of Drew Brees, who you will remember was awful his first 2.5 seasons in the NFL. Give this kid some time to learn behind a solid OL and running game and I think you will be pleasantly surprised by his game.
