I dont think the two are anything alike. San Diego was a horrid team when brees got there and he managed to pass for over 3k and more TD's than picks in his 1st year starting. I can't see Beck having that type of success, nd for the simple fact that Beck does not possess even the simplist fundamentals of the position. Handling the snap from center, handing off the ball to the runner, has bad footwork... those are just from what i have seen and Im not even trained. Its not like he wasnt given a chance. He went through 2 full training camps and OTA's while working exclusively with Lee. Maybe its his grip or whatever, but when you fumble as much as he does, as a QB, after all the practice and special attention he recieved, its not a recipe for success.
Welcome. He was given a shot at starting, but it was like learning to swim by being thrown in the ocean. He didn't fare to well, and he was unable to secure a #2 spot on the roster behind Pennington. I think he has a lot of potential, but I don't know if he'll realize it, perhaps the change of scenery will do him good. Cam saw something he liked in him twice.
All the conflicting opinions are due to the fact that no one really knows what Beck can and cannot do. However, we can all agree that he got thrown to the wolves last year, playing behind a terrible o-line with terrible receivers. The problem is that he's not 22. He's 28. I don't believe he's "scarred for life" or "lost his confidence forever". However, once he gets ready to play in the NFL, he'll be old. Nobody really has a properly informed opinion on the guy. Take this whole thread with a huge grain of salt.
yes, this is true, and i somewhat agree with the whole getting thrown to the wolves scenario, however my concern lies with the fact that there was no progress shown at all by Beck in year 2. every mistake he made in yr 1, he did not correct and followed him into yr 2. Perhaps a change of scenery would do, but I also think there were 2 reasons cam gave him another chance; 1) Cam wants to try his hardest to make sure his draft pick does not fail, 2) Cam owes him, probably feels bad for him (we all know Cam is a soft hearted dude), feels somewhat responsible for his developmental issues and gave him a contract, albeit only for 1 year..
RavensD you got a smart, eager QB who can not perform when the chips are down. Supposedly he's talented and accurate but he played well very mediocre and fumbled a lot in games. And when the new regime came in they tried him out and checked him out before the draft and didn't like what they saw. They brought in Chad Henne, Josh McKown and he couldn't beat any of them in TC. Here's a way to put it in perspective. When we got rid of Josh McKown we traded him away for a 7th rounder. No one was willing to even give us that for John Beck.
http://forums.thephins.com/showpost.php?p=699870&postcount=92 Pretty damn cocky for some reason. Must've put kool aid in the water supply in Detroit.
Is this guy nuts?... The "rebuilding since 1957" Detriot Lions are in for a surprise if they think Stafford is going to taker them out of the toilet that is Detriot. The stafford pick was horrible. They should have went with the much safer pick in Curry. They chose QB, TE, Safety, LB, DT, RB, LB, OT... They didnt take an OT tackle, which was a glaring need for them, (and with a rookie QB, a priority IMO), until the freakin 7th round. Who is going to protect the little guy? The fords must love going winless, because they could very well have a repeat of last year.
Hey RavensD You have a player who has football skills and alot of potential, but I'm not sure how much confidence he has left after being thrown to the wolves in his first year. He was drafted by Cam who is known as a QB guru, that's a title given to him by his peers, not by us fans. Beck was never supposed to see the field in his first year, the plan was to have him learn from the bench behind Green, and as such he was never properly prepared to see action. Even leading up to his first start he was sharing snaps in practice with Cleo Lemon, that should tell you how poorly the QB situation was handled. When he did make it into the game he was surrounded by journeymen and average players, Ronnie was gone, Chambers was traded, the OL was in shambles and the players that were left were mailing in their performances. I remember our draft guru ck saying that, more often than not, Marty Booker was jogging his routes right to the bench without even looking back at the QB, so it's no wonder that the kid didn't perform well. I think you have a capable backup given the right environment and coaching, I wonder how Cam's presense will effect Beck and how much of the lost confidence Beck might attribute to him. It's going to be hard for anyone to compete for the starting gig with Flacco, so Beck may be able to fill that number 2 spot nicely. It's worth noting that several NFL people saw alot of ability in Beck, so the potential is there if someone can get it out of him. I wish him the best and hope you guys find success, just not against us.
All of our players were playing like that though, there wasn't much confidence for any of them at the end of that horrible season in which players were fighting with the coach and mouthing off on the sidelines. The whole team was in shambles, might be the worst team we've had mentally in a long time. We tried hard to make Cam something that he wasn't, we passed over other HC's because we needed offense and thought that Cam could wear both the HC and OC hats, it was an epic fail, but I still think that he is one hell of an OC.
Yeah, you definately have a point I agree he is a good OC, the ravens really put it to us both times last year.. It was sickening watching them gatorade Cam on our sidelines. Booker still sucks
Beck was just thrown into the pit too soon...he played way too up tight...I dont see Beck being anything other than a backup for the next 5 years...but give him time...he's a nice addition to any team, class guy.
