so i think we could put OTA stuff in here, i will start off with OK tweets : thats it for now, if you have other stuff from other writers, bring it on
Good to see Baby Squid at DE, imo that is his natural position and he offers more than Odie does at that slot. Marshall and Grimes is an interesting combo
i don´t know if there will be much info going around, armando apparently is in boston for the announcement of which city is getting the super bowl, so that leaves us with omar and i don´t know who else
We might as well be the Six Million Dollar Dolphins. So many of our players are "repaired". This could seriously backfire.
WADR, why is that interesting? That was going to be the pairing in the beginning of the offseason all along. The only people to push them is rookies and you know in OTAs rookies aren't "offseason starters".
Speaking of which, if you're going to rebuild a guy to be a weapon, why not give him the power of backfire? It could be a used as a turbo boost or a way to get out of hold...just seems like it would have been useful.
Here is a list of James Walker tweets ... he is the AFCEast beat writer for ESPN and is at the OTA's today:
I'm pretty sure there was a blurb from Volin or Barry Jackson that said Starks was going to sit out OTAs but would report to mandatory minicamp in June.
I think I'd argue to say they are the 'expected' pairing at CB....Taylor has to a) learn the D better and b) prove himself to be much better than one of those guys before he'd earn any time with the 1st unit....We'll see a lot more in TC tho, I would suspect... EDIT: Ahh....took another look at twitter and found/was reminded that Taylor still unsigned and not in OTAs...could be another reason to pair those two....
if you look at it, sean smith is gone, taylor and davis are still unsigned, patterson is the slot man, that only leaves grimes and marshall to be out there 1st team
Do the rookies have to be signed first before they participate ? Who the hell is that fullback taking reps from lane?, is that the kid from fiu?, the kid thats making the switch from tackle to fullback? what kind of freakin shoulder injury did Dallas Thomas have?, it's been 5 freakin months since he played a football game? The Dion Jordan Oregon stuff pisses me off, I don't know how it all works or who's fault it is, but him not being able to do his job now is stupid, and a rule that needs to be looked at..doesn't the players union understand that it keeps the player down during the first season, get in there and change the damn rule suits, it's benefits these rookies going to these camps, and it fu&$s with our team when their not. Hey Randy Starks, your getting paid a lot of money this year for an average season last year, you should he happy with your franchise tag, get your *** in camp and make up for your average season. Reshad jones, you had one good year, do the right thing and be with your team while expressing your displeasure. I keep tellin y'all, don't worry about grimes being ready to go, he's fine. Miller than Thomas, they way it should be, Gilly, Gray and Marshall are gonna battle for one position, I think. Thiggy also got a lot of running back reps in camp last year because of how Philbin splits two offenses on the field at the same time.. It would be great for us if Odrick, Vern, and Jerry take a big step up in their game.. Olivier Vernon is a very very strong person, I believe he can hold the edge, If Starks wants to play his stupid games, then maybe he can slide in for Odrick at Dend, and allow Odrick to move inside.. Go big John, I think Jim turner got thru his fat *** last ear with that great ultimatum..."If you don't get it now, it's on you". So lance Louis is in a red shirt year, for some reason I thought he was on pace to play this year, not gonna happen with the acl happening in November.
Reshad Jones is in camp. Even though I don't like Olivier Vernon's pass rush much more than Jared Odrick's, I think Vernon should probably be starting at end. He gets the job done against the run and is more athletic, better range, gives better chase and probably can do more in pass rush. Also gives us more options for dropping back in a fire zone. Ultimately, Olivier Vernon is not the answer at that position. But I think he might be a better answer than Jared Odrick. Hell I think Derrick Shelby might be a better answer than Odrick. Might even be better than both Odrick and Vernon.
DJ, yes Jones is in camp. The FIU kid is Rupert Bryan, not Liaina - the guy getting reps today. No clue if I spelled either of those correctly MrClean! Also, I think Dallas Thomas had a torn labrum as well.
Here is an updated depth chart: http://www.thephinsider.com/2013/5/19/4344398/dolphins-depth-chart-update-5-19-13 The fullback you were thinking about is Bryan, who played right tackle for FIU, but is converting to fullback. He is third on the depth chart. Liaina is the fullback from San Diego St. and is an undrafted free agent. There had been some discussion about whether Dallas Thomas would be ready for training camp. Knew he would not likely be ready for mini camps. I agree with you on the rule regarding Jordan. They really should have done something already on that. Like every year, I will take all this with a grain of salt until training camp. That is when hype will be earned.
I'm sure you've addressed this, but are you down on Odrick as a whole, or on Odrick as an end? Do you think he could be effective as a DT?
a) Only those under contract can participate in team activities...not sure, if I'm one of them unsigned, that I'd want to chance being hurt? b) Didn't they say last week (one of the guys in local radio media, I forget who) that holding him back was more precautionary than anything else ?? Besides, I don't think he's signed yet, is he ?? If not, he's just working on his own on the side, like a good rookie...being there is half the battle... BTW, unlike Jordan's situation, he can participate (once signed) since his school is not on quarters schedule, but I agree that rule does not benefit these kids, unless they are still on scholarship working towards their degrees.. I don't know the status of Jordan's schooling (graduated or not) though. c) Starks is taking care of Starks right now. Can't blame him for that. One thing for sure, Starks isn't the kind of player that is home lolly-gagging around...he's a pro...now if that were JJ, I'd be scared silly right now... d) Hadn't heard that at all ?? But don't have an issue with guys being out there, with the team activities, while rehabbing and getting better... Remember, not everyone is an Adrian Peterson...let's not worry about a veteran like Louis until we get into TC...
I think Jared Odrick as an end is a mistake. I don't believe he's giving us anything on those base downs that we couldn't get 90 to 95% as well from a mid round pick such as Olivier Vernon or even a UDFA such as Derrick Shelby. Yet, those snaps end up tiring Jared Odrick and may be affecting his ability to be a dangerous interior pass rusher/penetrator on nickel downs...and that's the one skill that Odrick MIGHT have (we haven't seen it consistently yet) that may set him apart from the crowd and make him a valuable football player. So I say, let's explore the option where he might actually have some potential. But the bottom line is the coaching staff themselves have expressed reservations about him being on the inside full time. So the reality of the situation is that Jared Odrick may be a guy that makes more sense for a team running the kind of 3-4 defense Miami was when Odrick was drafted, as opposed to a team running what Miami is running right now. In that way, I would be surprised if they gave him a contract extension.
reshad jones says he missed yesterday due to personal reasons, he is all in on football thats the first you heard of mike wallace today...the haters would say...
Barry Jackson @flasportsbuzz2m Michael egnew got some first team snaps with dustin keller. Philbin said that was planned and earned Omar Kelly @OmarKelly14m Joe Philbin said OTA are a time to experiment and get some cohesiveness with different groups. Adam Beasley @AdamHBeasley15m Philbin on Odrick at DT: "It's a time to experiment. A time for us to look at guys at different spots." James Walker @JamesWalkerESPN26m #Dolphins safety Reshad Jones said he's focused on football and doesn't want to discuss his contract situation. Adam Beasley @AdamHBeasley27m Reahad Jones said his absence yesterday was a "personal" issue. Declined to talk about his contract. Said he'll be here rest of spring.
I have a feeling this Brent Grimes addition is going to end up looking like one of the smartest free agent additions Ireland has made in a while. At least in the short term since it's only a one year contract. If it works out, you've got to credit Ireland because in his own words he did a lot of research himself and practically learned everything he could about the injury in order to get comfortable with it. It sounds like this signing was sort of his baby.
"Michael egnew got some first team snaps with dustin keller. Philbin said that was planned and earned" Re-he-he-heeaally.
I had finally had enough of reading the roster and seeing Jeff Adams listed as from Kentucky. I called the Dolphins today and told them he played at Columbia. They essentially had ignored my emails. But if Jeff doesn't care I guess I don't either.
To me the two best moves the Dolphins made in free agency were Brent Grimes and Phil Wheeler. I always had Brent at the top of the list of corners in terms of pure talent when healthy but there's no way I have any ability to make a researched decision on his medical issues. That's what the well-paid medical staff are for. Wheeler to me was the top linebacker option available, though he did get more money than I expected. Fast forward a year, I think the Dolphins are going to be happy with those moves. In fact the unhappy part about the Grimes move may end up being that we only got him on a one year deal.
Yeah, that's a bit worrisome, though I wonder if that's on par with most teams these days. The amount of injuries these days may injure the future of this sport. That would suck.
I am praying that thee coaches' vision for Dion Jordan has him playing DE on all passing downs, and playing OLB on some other downs, intially. Long term, I think he is more valuable developing into Aldon Smith/Jason Taylor/Javon Kearse than as an OLB soaking up TE blocks and running to the sidelines. Needless to say, I wish this because I think Vernon is terribly miscast as a rush DE. He would be great depth for Misi, and should be developed, ultimately, as a 4-3 OLD who can occasionally move to DE in nickel fronts (as depth). I think Jeff ireland gets it, or he wouldn;t have jumped up to 3rd overall for the draft's best passrusher.
You know, the other option is to show more 3 fronts with Misi/Wake-Wheeler-Ellerbe-Jordan at LB and Odrick-Soliai-Starks on 1st and 2nd down. Then go Jordan-Odrick-Starks-Wake 4-front on passing downs.
Realize you weren't saying it was anyone's fault that we only have him for one year but I know Cleveland reporters mentioned he turned them down because he wanted to prove himself for a year and then go for the bigger deal.
That's significant, imo. Last year we had the field split in halves so the coaches coul turn in the middle and see each half-field's snaps gto double the # of reps they could practice. Now Philbin has adjusted, wanting the offenses to get full fields each so they can hone their deep ball. A smart adjustment by a coach who wants Tannehill and Wallace to have lots of opportunities to learn to hook up. I love Philbin.
