Parcells often walks around the weight room while the players work out, ''and you know when he comes because everybody stands up erect,'' former 49ers guard Justin Smiley said. ``If they're slouching, they get up and everybody is doing something. 'He gives everybody a hard time, makes little comments. He kind of looks me up and down, like, `Are you working hard?' He doesn't say anything, but you know what he's thinking. But deep down, you know if you're here, you're one of his guys.'' Channing Crowder said Parcells joked, ' `I had heart surgery and I still run faster than you.' '' Parcells' presence initially surprised players. ''For him to be that high on the totem poll, you wouldn't expect that,'' Crowder said. Receiver Greg Camarillo said of Parcells' and coach Tony Sparano's weight-room visits: ``It's slightly nerve-racking knowing they're watching every step.''
And I certainly hope it is nerve racking. Not Saban-esque nerve racking, but Tuna nerve racking...just enough to get the most from the guys...
• John Beck said he didn't perceive the Dolphins' drafting of Chad Henne as a lack of faith in him. ''I'm not taking offense to them bringing in another quarterback,'' said Beck, joined by the aforementioned players Tuesday at a fishing clinic for children. ``I'm working my tail off. The best guy will play. If they didn't want me to compete, they wouldn't have me here.''
I think the attitude that it seems parcells is trying to instill in these players is just what alot of them needed. for years we've had underachievers here. Its about time someone whips these guys into shape and makes them earn their paychecks!

This is nothing new.He has been doing it for years. The suprising thing is that he is still doing that with vigor even though he is not the head coach anymore. IMO he wants to imprint his mark on this team. The players cant help but feel his presence.Sparano can only merit a certain amount of respect but The Big Tunas is legendary and the players must feel awed.
Are you talking about the guy in your sig? Is that the reason your the only person who has him with a shirt off in their sigs? Nabo, you have raised questions.
According to reports he is present too in all of the sessions although he must feel overshadowed. Sparano has to earn the respect that Parcells has.Once he does he will be the one patrolling the workouts IMO
Crowder said there's a lot more power-lifting and ``guys will come in shape and not use camp to get in shape "Guys" must mean "I" to Channing..
After seeing him scream at Cowboys linemen on national TV, I think that's enough to warrant some respect.
IMO, screaming at anyone in public doesn't warrant any respect. That's why they have a locker room to do personal business in, not on the field. Talking or even sometimes getting agitated is understandable, but, no one should be humiliated.
I thought the Cowboys linemen deserved to be yelled out at that time considering their performance. If you can't take the heat, then well, you're Manny Wright.
The football arena is not a place for timid feelings Debbie. It's a place that warrants immediate attention to detail or the team might loose. These players are accustom to that type behavior, most of them have been exposed to it since they were 8 years old. It's not really personal, it's just a surefire way of clearing the fog of war.
True that. It's a psychological tactic, not unlike yanking firmly on the leash of a dog to get his attention and establish heirarchy.
I do agree with you up to a point. I just don't see humiliation as a tool to get someone to perform better. They should be told, even harshly, immediately etc. but being told while throwing a tantrum is not the way to talk to grown men. I know it's got to be hard to keep your cool in those situations, but screaming, pouting or humiliating someone just shows that their not the ones acting like children, maybe it's the coaches etc.
Humiliation is bunk but "dressing down" has its Place Debby..when guys are getting beat and they start to lose focus/intensity because their Moral is getting low you get a much faster and positive response getting in their face vs positive reinforcement...Its one thing to be positive and reasuring during practice and Preseason but money time its best to get them focused "NOW!".
I would question what could be more humiliating for a pro athlete: Humiliating words or being 1-15. I am of the opinion that nothing can be more humiliating for an athlete then being on a team that was 1 play from being winless. If it bothers any athlete that much, its probably time for a new day job since 90% of sports is mental toughness.
I hope you don't feel "ganged-up on" Debby. We're just boys, trying to deal with all this testosterone as best we can... edit: wow, my 1400th post! I'm a tp.c chronic, alright.
It's no different than opposing lawyers beating each other up in court, then afterward going out to the bar for a back slapping good time. It's the nature of the business and they all understand that.
Yeah, the only way I see any problems looming would be if Parcells is trying to run practices or is on the sideline on gameday. Those have to be Sparano's arenas.
John Beck knows what it is all about. Working his *** off and what is best for the team. I really believe he isn't worried about anything. Those under achievers are gone and Parcells and company have brought in the right type of guys to wear the Dolphins uniform with the right grit and toughness that this franchise was once known for. I agree with you 100% BTW this multi qoute feature is wonderful.
