Amazing isn't it? We get a starter that almost everyone agrees is the real deal in Henne and what's the first thing we do? We start arguing about who should be the backup!
Anyway, I think Pennington is now the backup. If we're in real game, you gotta believe we'll go with the seasoned vet who knows how to not-screw-up better than any QB currently in the league if, and god forbid, Henne ever goes down.
So that leaves us with Thigpen and White. Now if we're put in a situation where penny and henne are both down, then Thigpen should be the qb to go in. I'll admit that. But we have not seen Pat White play qb. Everyone claims he cannot play QB, and i have to asked, "Based on what?" He ran less than 20 plays at QB this season, and less than 5 of those were planned passing plays. When we put him in, defenses knew exactly what we were going to do. God forbid Henning calls a simple pass play with the kid in there. Oh no, defense might not see that coming, can't have that.
White was an admitted project player at QB who we knew would take time to develop and yet, through injuries, he ended up out there anyway. I still think we got something in him, and the notions that he should be cut right away or traded for whatever we can get are just way to short-sighted.
Maybe he'll never be anything in the NFL, but we don't know that yet.

Not sure why anyone would want to flame another got their opinion, who's to say who's opinion is better than another? As for Pat White, I'm not convinced yet that he has what it takes to carry a team as a Qb yet. I would be upset to see us get rid of Thigpen before we do, but I think that is what is going to happen.
Pennington backing up Henne reminds me very much of Strock backing up Marino. Not saying that the two are equal, just reminds me of that scenario. Marino benefited quite a lot from Strock.jason8er likes this. -

Well he's under the microscope because a lot of people on the boards hated the pick from day one, I think more than a few people would rather be right about hating the pick that have him work out. He's a raw athlete trying to find a position, I wasn't shocked that we didn't get much from him last year. I hope we can get him involved as a WR and get him the ball a little bit this year, see what he can do.

Only to our FO..........to the rest of the league and draft ppl, he was play maker prospect. Possible all purpose player/WR.
Us trying to make him into an NFL QB was an absolute train wreck...and drafting him at #44 over all as a QB prospect was an irresponsible use of a draft pick.KB21, Tin Indian, The G Man and 3 others like this. -

But, let's flashback to this exact time last year.
I was watching some show, I don't even remember what it was...good morning america or something, and he was the special guest.
While watching him and studying his stats at the time, I was thinking, what a great great kid he is, would be nice if we can pick him up in the 4th or 5th round and see what becomes of it.
Now, he can't control where he was drafted anymore than Ginn can, but he is, and always wil be a gimmick type of player, unless he changes positions all-together.
I put a lot of the blame on what happenend to Pat White last year directly on the coaching staff. That being said, I love our QB situation with Henne, Penny and Thiggy, and personally don't think White has any business being under center. No more so than Ronnie does as he has never shown he can do that.
I do hope they find a great way to utilize the kids athleticism, as he Is a VERY good athlete...and going back to watching his interview last year, I don't know that there is a better individual in the NFL character wise :up:PhinsRock likes this. -
By all accounts, Pat's a quality individual, hard worker and from his prodigious college accomplishments, has a mindset wired for success. I was bullish and supportive when we drafted him, although we had just cut another successful college spread formation QB for whom we also once had high hopes. (Aside from Brees, can you think of a college QB who's done well making that transition?)
However, based on his lack of success, although admittedly in a limited role ending up leaving Henne in the hole plus the probability that the WC, born out of the necessity of limited offensive weapons and a noodle-armed QB will be deemphasized now that Henne's shown he can put up 300yd games despite the limitations of his supporting cast, Pat has now gotta compete as a real QB.
Still and all, it was a shock seeing him on the field in person for the first time. He looks like a Pop Warner kid among men. Regrettably the NFL is not a league where a Tiny Archibald's speed and diminutive stature can still be consistently effective.
I don't want to lose Thigpen, who can win us games and is probably just as elusive as PWhite in the pros, even if that means cutting or trading a sterling character kid who was deprived of a real chance. It's a business and sometimes you have to acknowledge you screwed up and cut your losses before they mushroom. And that's the bottom-line for me.

Serious question! Did White play to many downs in 2009 to be place on the practice squad in 2010 so we can develop him?
-
i root for anyone the puts on a dolphins uniform and never hope someone does bad. pat white is a waste of a roster spot at this point.i wish the nfl had farm clubs like baseball, because that is where pat needs to be for about 2 or 3 years. judging from what ive seen of him he just isnt an nfl player at this point. he is a huge risk of getting injured every time the ball is in hands.if theres someone that needs to take steroids its pat white.the nfl should make an exception for him and let him use steroids medically because if he dont hes going to end up on an espn sportscenter segment "the tragic story of pat white".
with that being said we would be foolish to choose white over thigpen. the draft picks are nice but penny is 1 and done and white will never be that guy. but im sure thigpen wants a shot at starting spot, thats not here, so who knows. regardless i will always cheer for pat white when hes on the field for the fins.PhinsRock likes this. -

let them compete
-
Before i criticize Pat White, I'd like to see him actually prepared in the offseason and praticing what he'd be running in the games he plays in. That just wasn't the case in his rookie year. I thought our coaching staff (whom I am very supportive of 99% of the time) really blew it preparing White for success. We did not let him do in the preseason and camps what he was asked to do in the regular games.

I thought Pat White had a solid college carer but he should not have been picked in the 2nd round. You line up Pat White next to a Maurice Jones-Drew or Sproles and the thing these other little guys have that White doesn't is a big strong lower body. I just don't think White has the size to play QB. He is not Doug Flutie. So we either deal him away or we see if he can run back kicks and maybe compete for a #5 WR spot, which I would say is highly unlikely. Sometimes you just have to cut your losses and move on.

What I don't understand is the fact that people are willing to give a WR 3 years to develop in the NFL but not give that same opportunity for a QB to develop is beyond me.
People gave, and some are still giving, Ted Ginn an opportunity to develop but Pat White had 5 passing attempts in his rookie season and he's a bust?
I am not saying I think Pat White will be a great QB in the NFL, heck I am not even saying he will be a good QB. But it is not fair to not even give him the chance cause you don't agree with where he was drafted. -

I don't think the argument needs to be made against Pat White and whether he can play in the NFL. In limited action last year he showed basically nothing that would make me believe he can be an NFL Qb. I think the onus is on the ones who think that he can and try to rationally sway everyone else.

The mistake that was made with him was leaving him at quarterback. He would be much more useful had he learned to play special teams from the very beginning and began his development as a wide receiver/athlete prospect. I think he could develop into an Antwan Randle-El type of player if he is moved to WR. Some wanted to disagree with me when I said it, but ARE is the player Pat White most resembled in college.the 23rd likes this. -
thigpen will be the #3
white will have to make his bones elsewhere:
1) WildCat
2) Return Team
3) WR or Slot
he is not a conventional QB but an excellent athlete & football player
both pat white & patrick turner
will get their opportunity to contributre or parish in 2010
patience, the jury is still out on the two pats

I'd trade him to the highest bidder myself. I always said move him to Rb but after seeing the snot get knocked out of him, I say just admit he was a mistake.
Now I'm all for him getting reps in training camp if no teams want him but I really think he is overwhelmed... -

The experiment failed. -

If the kid can catch, then try him at WR, if he can't then this experiment is over. (same thing I said last year)

im still fuming that we left clint sintim on the board for pat white

Ginn/Willis was far worse imo -
No way I see Penny starting over Henne, not after the solid play and multiple 300+ passing yard games we saw from Henne last year. Henne starts, Penny #2 and Thiggy #3. Or possibly Henny then Thiggy at #2 just because he could give us the spread optiom/WC QB we all (well not many actually, but that's another thread) thought White could be.
I think we have to look at where else White could contribute and develop for a year or two until Penny retires. THEN maybe White will have grown up and become a decent #3 QB for us.
Could White return Punts? God knows Bess sucks at it. -

Im sure Coaches and F.O. have something in mind for PW... thing is Parcells isnt afraid to cut him and move on like most GM's that wont admit they made a mistake..

Both Turner & White will get a legitmate shot
@ playing ball & contributing or move on after 2010.
not a good idea to pull the trigger too quickly on these guys
they were high draft choices & their picks were well thought out
they could both prove their worth in 2010.
