I just want Sparano gone, the line is HORRIBLE and that is supposed to be his strongest area of expertise. He is a joke.

 

I don't want any part of Landry Jones. He just feels like empty numbers to me.

Weeden's age concerns me. Tannehill has been underwhelming. RGIII, Luck, and I'd say Weeden are possibilities although RGIII seems to have come out of nowhere.

Yeah; you have to come to terms with it or it eats you up and starts to color other elements of your life, even make you turn on fellow fans, the way some are choosing to let their anger release. This isn't why we become fans!

A change is needed, to be sure. But now, seeing exactly how bad we are, I wonder if we wouldn't actually be better off going ahead and being bad; bad enough to get that prize at the top of the draft.

I could never bring myself to dignify those media articles aggrandizing the tanking of the season to achieve the "goal;" that makes me sick. But in our case we're not talking about tanking—we genuinely are that bad, bad enough to be "deserving" of the top position in the 2012 draft. All we'd have to do is stay the course.

That would bring its own issues, though; as you pointed out, it's clear that the players are disgusted, and who knows how deep that goes, and the causes for it that remain out of our sight.

I don't have the answers; if I had to make a decision, I know I'd fire both Sparano and Ireland tomorrow. That's an absolute. But would you go ahead and bring in the guy you want, whoever that is? Apart from the expense of luring him, you'd likely have to buy out his TV contract, and no matter what I don't believe there's any saving this mess this season.

Promote an interim HC, I suppose.

I think you have to give it to Nolan simply because he's got prior head coaching experience. Yeah, his unit stinks. The Asst. Head Coach is Todd Bowles, the secondary head coach. Going strictly by title, he'd be next in line; but his unit stinks just the same. But, I think all things being equal, Nolan's the best guy for the interim job. Who knows, maybe he keeps the team competitive and wins a few games to the point where you have to interview him come January just to be sure you still want a guy like Cowher or Gruden.

But, I think the only way to solve the Dolphins in the long-term - because I don't think you can solve the short-term, meaning this 2011 season - is cleaning house. Starting at Jeff Ireland and working on down to Tony Sparano and the coaching staff. Now, perhaps you start with Tony during the bye week and keep Ireland the rest of the way to make it seem like you've got something under control (speaking from Stephen Ross' perspective) and that the whole organization is not in turmoil (which I believe it is).

I think we need to just wait until January though. Ross is already paying Sparano. We know he is gone after this year anyway. If we get in interim coach we might get some cheap wins, but that wouldn't help. Keep Sparano, hopefully we can be bad enough to get Luck, then fire them all in January.

 

Bill Cowher is a big named, championship coach, but the problem with him is that he is simply more of the same. He has the same base philosophy that every coach we have had since 1996 has had. I'm a conservative guy, but I'm ready to open things up. I don't think we get that with Bill Cowher. Plus, he is going to want final say on all personnel decisions and complete autonomy over the football operations. It is rumored that his GM will be Omar Kahn, who has no background as a scout.

If we target an experienced guy who is currently working in the media, then I think we should go full bore after Jon Gruden. He has his warts, but the guy has spent the past two plus years studying the various spread offenses at the college level. He has talked extensively with Chip Kelly at Oregon and Urban Meyer at Florida about their offense, and he has made several comments about running the spread when he gets back into the NFL. That's what I want to see in Miami. I want to see something that is wide open, exciting, and new in the NFL, and I think there is a great chance we would get that from Gruden.

It is time to try something different. From 1970 to 1995, the Dolphins had a 0.659 winning percentage. From 1996 to now, the Dolphins have a .502 winning percentage, and that has actually declined since Dave Wannstedt. The team has a 0.410 winning percentage since 2005. The common thread is that the coaches we have had during that time span are your typical grind it out, run the ball, play defense, win in the kicking game coaches.

 

Chances are, Bill is going to get a coordinator that will do what he wants them to do.

 

I think maybe Bill Cowher gets painted with a little bit of an unfair brush. I mean, a lot of his offenses were pretty notable for their aggressive, trick plays...and this is the man that not only oversaw a team that took Kordell Stewart and used him in a Slash role...but actually made Kordell Stewart a full time quarterback! Talk about progressive.

Keith you love on Chan Gailey all the time, Bill Cowher is the man that hired Chan Gailey to be his offensive coordinator, promoting him from WRs Coach. Why should we assume that when Bill Cowher comes aboard, he'll immediately hire Kippy Brown as his offensive coordinator? That just hasn't been in his history. Mike Mularkey, Chan Gailey and Ken Whisenhunt have been his offensive coordinators...and when you get right down to it those guys are all aggressive, creative coordinators that innovate and love to spread things out.

I mean, really think about this a moment. His offensive coordinators over the years have been Ron Erhardt, Chan Gailey, Ray Sherman (only one season), Kevin Gilbride (only two seasons), Mike Mularkey and Ken Whisenhunt. When he's had guys that were inept (Sherman, Gilbride), he cut them out within a short span of time. Basically, the ones that stuck were Ron Erhardt, whose offenses were something of a legend and in fact there's a whole system that is named for him, Chan Gailey, Mike Mularkey and Ken Whisenhunt. The latter three are anything but guys I would accuse of never thinking outside the box and running "traditional" and "boring" offenses. And in fact, all three guys parlayed their success as Pittsburgh offensive coordinators into Head Coaching jobs.

I think Bill Cowher gets unfairly painted with a broad brush simply because he's a defensive coach that preaches tough and physical play from his teams. But his pick of coordinators have always been guys that were pretty cutting edge, both on offense and defense.

 

Which isn't the bad thing that you make it out to be, IMO.

That is a great article. I want to kick myself for buying into the Parcells philosophy. As most probably remember, I was against hiring Bill Parcells because I felt his reputation as a personnel guy was overrated, and I felt like he treated folks poorly. I bought into the philosophy after that first year, and I am really kicking myself for going against my initial opinion. Hindsight is 20/20, but the Dolphins would be much better off today had they done what I wanted back then and brought in Tom Heckert Jr. to run the football operations. I have no idea who he would have hired as a head coach. Don't really care at this point. I just know that Tom Heckert Jr. is a much better personnel executive than Dollar Bill and his puppet combined.
