Pennington's arm poses challenges for Dolphins

DAVIE — Late in Sunday's season-opening loss to the New York Jets, Chad Pennington walked to the sideline during a timeout but stopped before reaching the Dolphins coaching staff.
After signaling for a ball, the 32-year-old quarterback began playing catch with a teammate.
An odd moment quickly became a nervous one for those familiar with Pennington's long history of right shoulder problems.
"I thought that was weird," one Dolphins insider said. "I saw that and thought, 'His arm is hurting.'"
In the press box, former Jets defensive end Marty Lyons, who as a radio analyst covered Pennington's career in New York, wondered the same thing.
Pennington, who would finish the day with 43 attempts, already had thrown 25 passes, more than he did during four of his seven starts with the Jets in 2007. He also had just been flattened on a blindside sack by 270-pound linebacker Calvin Pace, landing on the shoulder that needed two career-threatening surgeries in 2005.

I believe if and when Henne is called upon, he will deliver. I'm hoping that's not until late in the season or even next year, but I would not be nervous with him under center vs. say another 2nd round pick we had.

I can deal with posted articles like this. It's the Jet Fan commentary that usually follows the article that gets me heated. Honestly though, I didn't even realize a Jets fan had posted this until I read some of the responses.
Pennington does have issues with arm strength, but he's still one of the smartest QBs in the league and will figure out ways of getting this team into the end zone. -

Yeah, I along with many other Phin fans have been saying the same thing, Penny's arm is going to limit our offense and Jets fans know this better than we do. Defenses don't fear his arm and they will cheat against the run, making Ronnie's and Ricky's job that much tougher.
I'm still not sure why it's hard for people to accept valid criticism around here.Jets81 likes this. -
Then why post this garb here??? -

I wish we had stuck to it a little more as well, put you can do it so long if its not working. That said, Ronnie should've gotten more carries. Ashame too because there D was DONE in the 4th quarter. Had we started Ronnie he may have worn them down a little quicker.Xeticus likes this. -

Any way you slice it, 49 yds. rushing is pathetic. -
I've heard many people say that Pennington gets worse when he throws over 25 passes in a game. Here's a look of Pennington when he throws over 25 passes in a game since 2005. 2005 was when he had his first rotator cuff surgery performed. I used 2005 because people always say "well, he was able to do this and that before the surgery."
Record: 9-11
Completion Percentage Per Game: 64.7 %
Touchdowns Thrown Per Game: 1.25
Interceptions Thrown Per Game: 1.1
Quarterback Rating Per Game: 82.6
NOTE: The statistics above do include Pennington's first game with the Dolphins. -
I guess I don't understand all the negativity being leveled at Pennington. He did throw two TD passes and put us in a position to win the game. Let's give him a few more games before passing judgement.

Looks like spelling poses "challanges" for Jet fans.
Sorry man, I couldn't resist. :tongue2:Jets81 likes this. -
Seriously though it's not meant to be any kind of smack, more to give you guys the best possible idea of what you're in for. I believe Chad Pennington was robbed of an opportunity to be one of the greats. His body just didn't cooperate.
The problem now is, it's hard to judge whats really wrong if the offense sputters. Is it the OL that's just incapable of run blocking, poor RB play, or is it defenses not fearing the long pass and stacking the box? -
That doesn't all of a sudden go away because he's in a Miami uni. :wink2: -
People can have any opinion they want of his abilities. But he's the best option we have so why trash the guy? You still didn't address the fact that he was one of the only productive offensive weapons we had last week. And he was moving the ball without a running game to keep the defense honest. I don't care about arm strength, I care about results. We came up short last week, but it would have been a lot shorter without Pennington's effort. -

I fully expected the Jets D to cheat against the run, number one they have a very good secondary and number two because that's what teams have been doing against Penny for a while now. They try to take away the run game and force him to try and beat them in the air, which has led to alot of picks/turnovers and was the reason that the Jets were trying to replace him. Our offense was dreadful last week, I didn't see too many highlights. I saw alot of incompletions early on and a few WR's who were wide open and didn't even get a look. When you are a run oriented team and you end up throwing the ball 43 times a game, something is wrong. You can blame it on a poor running game, you can blame it on the score, you can chalk it up to poor playcalling, etc but I saw something that I've seen more than a few times over the past couple of years, it was something that I worried about when he was rumored to be coming here and it's going to bother me all season. Penny is going to handicap this offense a bit and we aren't talented enough to overcome it.
Again, I'm not trying to trash a player, this is just something that he's known for and it's the reason the Jets wanted to get rid of him and it's also why the Jets fans are pointing it out. They know. :wink2: -

I think that game showed Sparano's newness as a head coach. I think our coaching staff panicked a little and gave up on the run too early. Ricky had a couple of nice runs and Ronnie barely had the ball. Ronnie needs to get warmed and into a rhythm. I think if we had kept pounding the ball we would have had more time of possession, slowed the jets down and broken some big runs in the 4th quarter after their defence was worn down. Hopefully Sparano learned a few things from this game.

I guess I better get used to the Pennington weak arm / sucks threads. I really hate to turn this into another John Beck thread, but for those of you keeping track at home, Pennington threw double the amount of TDs that John Beck threw last season in one game. Keep that in mind when trashing his arm strength.
If Pennington could gain 1/4th the acceptance John Beck had / has on this board he'll be doing ok. It's amazing the excuses some of you will make for one QB, but not another. -

Again, this thread is not about Pennington vs. John Beck. I just think people need to be thankful that we have a veteran QB on this team that can orchestrate points. He's not the best QB in the NFL by any means, and he's not the future, but he's the best QB on our roster right now and deserves our support. -

I like Penny, I actually wanted him before FA even started to fill the vet backup role, but I quickly changed my mind when I read that he wanted to be a starter. Ginn is a homerun threat and he's going to be misused all year if Penny is unable to hit him downfield. If you can't spread the defense, then the running game is going to struggle to find yards and that is part of the drawback to having Chad behind center IMO.
