Not sure him being on the lawsuit means anything. He'd be working for the Dolphins not the league.

But hey, we defended a guy who got the GM job and held it for 6 years with no success by being Parcell's friend and being around the 85 Bears as a ball boy. Marino's extensive experience surely can't trump thatcdz12250 likes this. -
Ray Farmer, Ozzie Newsome, Matt Millen (not the best example), etc. were all ex-players that started somewhere in a front office.
Marino's not being asked to be the GM or Director of college scouting or anything like that, so I don't see how this is a negative.
If I had to guess, he's probably being brought in to a position to oversee 'football' operations and ensure we're being run like a successful organization(as he knows a little bit about that) and not the **** show that we've been -
Dan Marino has experience as a player and a CBS analyst. Theres really nothing that suggests any type of experience in a front office or even an administrative capacity. At this point, I'd say he's most qualified to take over Jesse Agler's job. If you're going to make the argument that Marino's playing experience makes him qualified to work in an NFL front office, then I don't see how there are a lot better options available. Dan Marino isn't any more qualified than Boomer Esiason.
None of this is to say that Dan Marino can't or won't succeed, but you're pretty much relying on blind faith and hope.Mainge likes this. -
If Marino isn't qualified to be the GM or director of scouting, how in the world could he be their boss??? -
I feel like this is automatically assumed by the people banging the Marino has no experience drum?
John Elway also had none of this experience. He was brought in and did what he was good at, and landed the most prized free agent in the modern era which has led his team to a superbowl -

I wonder if Marino's arrival in Miami signifies a potential bridge to the next coach and GM.
Joe Philbin is heading into his third year as coach. If Philbin and the Dolphins miss the playoffs for a 3rd straight season, heads should roll. With Ross's inability to anything remotely intelligent, I imagine that's where Dan Marino comes in. In many ways, it takes pressure off of Ross to have to decide anything. Just let Dan do it. Funny enough, Dan should have no problem adapting to that philosophy. 17 seasons with Maimi and nothing has changed :shifty:CashInFist likes this. -

I have said this before but I really do imagine that Dan Marino could function outside of and sort of parallel to the football organization and answer directly to Steve Ross.
When Ross has had to make big decisions about this franchise's leadership, he's had nobody he could turn to except for Carl Peterson, who isn't affiliated with the team in any way and doesn't have any feel for the local landscape or the fan base.
That's not the way you run things. I think Steve Ross knows his own limitations. He should be looking for a football advisor who is specifically NOT involved in the day to day operations of the franchise. Ross needs someone on his side to help him evaluate whether the people who are in charge of the day to day operations are doing their jobs well, and to help him make key decisions when things aren't going well.CashInFist, DPlus47 and sports24/7 like this. -
I'm almost positive it will be nothing more than a consulting job, they just want his presence in the games and on the practice field. He won't have many duties other than to bring a respectable presence to the franchise.

I'm almost positive there will be a significant percentage of people who will believe the job is nothing more than window dressing, regardless of the actual details and day to day interactions that the job entails.
But when/if Dan Marino is the guy in meetings and on phone calls with Steve Ross having discussions about whether Joe Philbin should be fired, and when/if Dan Marino is the guy sitting next to Steve Ross conducting interviews of potential head coach replacements...perhaps people will think differently.RevRick, eltos_lightfoot, fins4o8 and 2 others like this. -

I mean lets say Miami suddenly has a vacancy for director of college scouting. Can Dan Marino put together a list of candidates that can fill that role? Carl Peterson has a pretty wide network of scouts he knows personally. IIRC, he actually provided the league with his recommended list of GM candidates, which they used from a high-level view.
Does Dan Marino have those same type of networks available to him? Does he have a short-list of front office types in his pocket? He very well could, but there really isn't anything that supports the theory. -
-
I wonder how the team can **** this up and find a way for Marino to damage his legacy or give him power he really shouldn't have.
-
-
Cause I don't think the job will be about GM duties.it will be about determining after a certain time period whether or not the team is headed in the right direction, and if not hiring people who you believe that will get it there.

there's a line in the story that updates Marino's lawsuit status
