Many many sacks are the result of circumstances, rather than just a pass rusher defeating a blocker one on one and getting a sack. What should we do? Give them a different stat for a flush sack or what?

So he is the first and only player in recorded NFL history to get a sack and flagged for a facemask in the process?

This is one of the bigger difference between how Luck uses his feet and how Tannehill does. Luck has better awareness. FOr example, on a play like your first photo against the Radiers, Luck glided about three to four feet to the left to relieve the pressure and get a better throwing angle and then threw a completion to the hashmarks on the left side for around ten yards, maybe more. Same play, Tannehill eats a sack.

I'm not dogging anything. I just don't think it's particularly praise worthy.

He had a much better play a few plays earlier that no one is talking about.

You can have any Oline in the NFL and when 3 out of the five are mediocre to bad, yeah, they all will score bad. Martin, Jerry and Clabo are horrible at best.

Talk about that better play then. Who's stopping you?

And that play IS praise worthy for any rookie, especially one who's been limited due to injury - if only for the effort and tenacity. Take away the penalty and everyone would be happy as a lark that our #1 pick got his first of hopefully many sacks this season opposite Wake.

So, what is the better play?

I believe that when you're evaluating a young player (or anything really), the process is more important than the result. On this play Jordan showed some nice explosiveness and nearly beat Joe Thomas. He's not credited with a sack like in the aforementioned play but to me, this is the better play when you're trying to evaluate him.

It really is nice to read someone who can objectively assess this team without Aqua and Orange glasses. I concur completely everything you have so clearly and accurately pointed out in this thread.

I do believe that the Indy game will be better than the Cleveland game for this O-line, partly because it can't be worse, and partly because I don't believe the Indy matchups present as much of a difficulty level for this group.

With the improvement in the numbers this week, and there will be an improvement, the homers will declare the problem resolved and any mention of the O-line will be met with contempt.

This isn't a weakness that is going to be coached away however, and there will probably be more threads and posts on this offensive line this season, than any other area of this team.

I hope Ryan Tannehill stays healthy, I worry for him this season. Someone up front is going to get beat so badly, that a T-off on Tannehill is imminent.

LOL - Yah I forgot about the Brett Favre / Strahan thing - I would have to credit you with a topper there. This post is well said, nobody is knocking Jordan as much as were crediting Starks. The rant on Jordan's contributions to the play, were a bit sarcastic.

Jordan will contribute enough for us to be excited about without us having to rave over his prowess for every average sack and subsequent personal foul he commits.

Did Jordan get credited for that sack? Its on game center stats....and a lot of the media reported 6 sacks.

Either way it shows promise as he beat a top 3 LT in limited snaps.

Lane Johnson PFF rating in game 1 : +4.2 There was one McCoy run where he pancaked his block and then kept trying to plant the guy underneath the RFK field, just driving him into the turf. One of those "I will own you all day" moments.

Yea, I commented (if not in this thread, then to GridIronKing via text) about how close Dion was to a FF/sack on that play.

Oh, BS... most of us on the board have clearly stated that Martin is a work in progress. We know he will struggle in his first season at LT, and accept that. What we do expect is to see growth and improvement over the course of the season.

Jerry has always been a problem, and it doesn't help that he has been injured and gimpy in what we were hoping would be the season he finally blossomed. Watkins should be able to push him or start in place of him in the next game or so.

Clabo isn't the player he used to be and was released by the Falcons for a reason, but he is still the best RT we have had in a few seasons.

Cogs had a few miscues as well.

The only guy who had a good game against the Browns was Pouncey.

All said, no linesman wins every battle, every time. You just need them to win the majority and, in our case, for our young QB and RB to help them out as they too grow in their position and gain better cognizance of what is occurring in real time.

Not ranting and raving about the season being lost and using terms like "crap" and "horrible" to describe their play, doesn't mean that anyone who disagrees with a particular POV opinion is a blind homer. It could mean that they are waiting for a body of work to make a truer assessment and not resorting to over the top hyperbole after the first game. The contempt you speak of is usually directed at the way a message is phrased, and not necessarily the message or the opinion itself.

If I'm sarcastic or aggravated in my posts it is only because this problem didn't suddenly appear in the Cleveland game. It was obvious to me and every evaluator on the planet that Miami needed to address the O-Line this past offseason and it lacks any reasonable logic to dump millions into skill players and ignore the most glaring weakness on your team. The very weakness that will see the demise of this season.

It is pure incompetence and every Dolphins fan should be pissed off about it and I'm miffed that you personally need a larger body of work to evaulate it, when not a single guy on that line doesn't already have a "body of work" to evaluate.

This season will be lost and it will be lost solely on the incompetence of the GM. This defense, this QB, and all of these new skill players are one offensive line from being recognized as something special and if that doesn't piss you off when it clearly didn't have to be so, then I don't know what to say to you. Keep hoping for the best.

Yes, I'm sarcastic to the point of fault, yes I'm annoyed that this GM couldn't see what the rest of us could, and yes we are one solid offensive line away from being a really good football team.

An aging Clabo, who was cut by Atlanta and whose best days are behind him, is better than Martin at RT but we need to wait and see on Martin at LT?
    Do you really believe this??

Ok - Lets wait and see. Poor Lamar Miller -

It looked a lot to me like RT was told pre-game "this is going to be a close hard faught game, do not force throws, take the sack if you have to). Thats why he only had one throw that risky, and it got tipped and picked.

Off topic, but does anyone know whether PFF gets access to the coaches tape before the general public does?

It seems silly to me to declare any emphatic pattern of how the O linemen will play based on one game.
As for Clabo, he was the 14th best OT in the league last season by PFF with a rating of +21.3. So, he had a negative game. He had 4 last year.
The best OT in the league over the past two seasons combined by PFF was Duane Brown. Guess which OT had the worst overall rating this year in week 1? You guessed it. So this must mean he is now the worst OT in the league. One game is enough to decide, after all. :shifty: For that matter, Kalil and Clady both had poor games in week 1, so they must suck now too.

For all you people sniveling about Martin, and how he sucks, has always sucked, and always will, Duane Brown struggled mightily his first 2 seasons in the league. The light came on for him in season 3. Give Martin some time for fvcks sake. Not every OT plays at a pro bowl level his first two seasons in the league like Jake Long did. Today though, if given the choice of Duane Brown or Jake Long to be my LT, for the same money, I'd take Brown in a heartbeat.

That's fair. Duane Brown was a guy whose development was unusually long, but he did develop within that system.

You're not allowed to say that. Jordan was only the beneficiary of Starks inside pressure. He was just standing there. Any member of this forum could have made that sack. Besides he grabbed the facemask like a big dummy. It couldn't have been inadvertent or anything. Grabbing the facemask is always done on purpose. :wink2:

If you're not saying it's all Ireland's fault, the season's lost and we're doomed until he's gone, you're obviously a blind homer. You can't mention how other teams or OTs did. That would add perspective and you'd obviously just be making excuses. :wink2:

Averages from a small sample really don't mean a whole lot.

What small sample is that Phin?? This entire O-line just played their first game ever? Sorry pal, I was on this bus before the season started, because there is plenty of sample to draw a conclusion.

The Cleveland game was just the first signs that every evaluator I know, was indeed correct. Except of course, You and Ireland.
