I think it is ridiculous to somehow ban making private statements of interest about a player. So basically you can't even think about a player until after they become free agents.

Personally I think we have some of the worst writers in the country down here anyway. Half the storys that these guy's come up with a take with a grain of salt. For all we know his "team source" was the guy that delivers the fresh water at the teams headquarters.
So if you're going to punish a team for what a writer has said that's going to get rather ugly.djphinfan likes this. -
I get it, because (as in this case), if it comes out, that player could use it as a leverage to extract more cash from a particular team.
This is a little concerning because of the way the Dolphins' FO is bending/breaking the rules. Did they tamper with Nolan? This is clearly tampering, so what gives? I would just hate for Miami to get hit with fines, etc.
I know teams do it, but Miami is looking more and more like a mob. I wouldn't be surprised if Joey Porter ends up wearing concrete boots at the bottom of the ocean. :lol: -
Good points and let us not forget how we tend to bend the rules when it comes to announcing injury's.

I am not too impressed with their writing skill, but some of these guys get some good info and are quoted on a regular basis by the bigger guys (ESPN, Fox Sports). I try to follow other teams, too, because I am a fan of the NFL, and pretty much on a daily basis, they have a story. I like it. Many teams do not get this much coverage. seriously??? PFT must have it out for the Dolphins. This is the third time in the last couple of years that I can recall them bringing up tampering with respect to Miami's FO. First it was Sparano and how we "got him" from Dallas. Then, just recently, it was Mike Nolan and Denver. Now this...

Yeah, it does seem like PFT has something for Miami, but I usually do not follow other teams via PFT, so maybe they do this for other teams? I dunno.
Also, the actual report came from the Miami Herald, this guy is merely pointing out that technically, it's tampering. Can't really blame the guy for being observant.....2k5 likes this. -

I agree with you 100%,they were merely giving their opinion and never talked directly to Jackson or his agent,nor did they come between San Diego and Jackson. Then the media and reporters wonder why the front office don't want to make comments,I don't blame them for keeping things hush hush.Paul 13 likes this.

If this guy is right on his NFL tampering policy, I can see where this can be a hindrance to teams. They do not want other teams showing interest (public or privately) in players under contract; with "interest" falling under many contexts. Even privately talking about a player, as with this case, could lend itself to a mess for teams trying to re-sign a player because it could eventually become public. The media is a ***** in that way.
Now, San Diego might have issues with his agent because of this "leak". His agent could point out that Miami is interested, so that puts SD in a pickle in trying to whip up a contract.
It does not matter if they talked directly to Jackson or his agent (though I would not be surprised if it has happened), it's the perception.
Saying something like, "Jackson is a good player and we would definitely benefit from his services" is probably not tampering.
On the other hand: "Jackson is a good player and we are definitely interested in his services".
Not much difference in wording, but it's that impression of going after or seeking that player's services while he is still under contract that falls under tampering.
Is it ticky-tack? Maybe. But I see the point of the policy. -
Not really on the contract or at least in his case being a RFA. Even if Miami worked out a contract offer to him SD could just match it and he stays in SD. If they don't then we can have him but then we would be required to give them the appropriate draft picks for him depending on salary. That's how we lost Welker.....

I was merely making a point. But, yeah, if he is a RFA, I guess it works out that way (I am taking your word on this because I do not know if he is or is not).
But you might be on to something in that, maybe in this particular case, the tampering thing is not that big of a deal considering the circumstance? -
whatever, just get us Vincent Jackson!

Here is a complete list of RFA's.
Note: Ronnie Brown is listed as a RFA and its my understanding that he is still under contract if the year goes uncapped. I'm not sure how many other anomalies there may be on that list. -
Also I personally think tampering is a big deal and unethical. Thing is the league can't ever seem to enforce it for reasons listed in the OP article.

Until Goodell hits us with a loss of a draft pick or picks, then its not BS but the NFL showing its bias against the Dolphins. There is definately something more than meets the eye when it comes to the Dolphins. We seem to get into more trouble than other teams. Yet when the NE Patriots blatantly cheat with their video tape scandal, Goodell orders the proof destroyed quickly and wristslaps the Pats, and especially Belicheat.

It is only tampering when the teams name is the Jets, or the Pats :tongue2:....but it is very very hard to prove tampering, you would literally need to get said organization's player (V-Jax) on tape with the Miami "official" talking about this stuff, and if he did that he would be blackballed.....
Lastly I love V-Jax but the 1st and 3rd tender to get him is ridiculous, I rather have Marshall for that, or just Quan for a 3rd straight up... -
ronnie brown would be a UFA if they come to terms on a new cba by march 5th. they wont (most likely) so instead since ronnie brown signed a 5 year deal in 2005......he will be reverted back to a RFA.
and if you signed a 4 year deal in 2006 (greg jennings) he would be a RFA instead of a UFA also.
so technically ronnie can be taken from us being a RFA. but we'd get ridiculous compensation for him......and we'd have the opportunity to match the deal to keep him. -
every team tampers, every team cheats, every team tries to do things to give themselves advantages.....it is almost impossible to get caught, unless you stick a camera visibly on the field, for all to see...
its the same with shutting off communications to headsets for opposing coaches, piping in crowd noise etc etc..just because somebody on another team says yeah you would be a nice fit on our team doesn't make it tampering, or vice versa...how about when Ocho said on TV, "Cmon Bill get me to Miami man, I wanna play down there" there is no difference in that?? -

I agree 100%, but I am pointing out that in this case.....is it tampering to the utmost degree?
I do not know how how contracts dealing with RFAs work, but if it is like you say, the point might be moot considering the circumstance. The Chargers could just match and he'd still be in SD, or Miami gives up picks. It would be different if he was an outright FA beginning to work out a deal as opposed to what's happening here.
I think there's a difference.... -
