Gotta win out to get in.. Ravens keep getting love from the referees..

I still find him to be less than inspiring. That was a good, hard fought football game but given that last play we were as lucky as f*** to win it. Something about that speech just didn't resonate with me. Even if he joked about the last play or something like that it would have felt more authentic to me, that was typical spam coach speak.
ps Is it me or are the Dolphins defenders kind of lollygagging on that last play? Look at #52 Philip Wheeler here at aruond 1:25

I don't care what anyone says- one inch out of bounds, barely a forward lateral from Big Ben if you look at it closely, that was almost a disaster/embarrassment for the ages.Da 'Fins likes this. -
Also, post game locker room speeches are the least important thing a coach does. Much of it is edited out by the way, so you have no idea what's actually happening in there. Last year, Philbin would dance a jig after a win just for the players. -

What was Joe Philbin thinking when the game's final play was going on? "Please step out of bounds," Philbin said.

And as to Philbin, whether he gives a vanilla speech, dances a jig or even if he popped to the whole soundtrack of Breaking 2: Electric Boogaloo or whatever it's called, he lacks charisma imo, I find him to be less than inspiring. -

We played a GREAT game yesterday....and won, but you wouldn't know that listening to your drivel. -

Will the league make any comment about that lateral or will they move on? I think jim1 was trying to say how close we came to losing that game and what a disaster that would have been.We played so hard and tough yesterday, would have been an epic fail if Brown did not step out of bounds.Even though I thought that lateral was forward, Find it hard to imagine over turning that TD in Pittsburgh if Brown stayed in. Been a fan for 40 yrs, would have been the toughest loss i have seen.

So we're talking about the hypothetical of Big Ben's illegal forward pass, when in reality the play should have been blown dead right away. -
Sounds like what some guys want is a Bill Walsh strategizing game plans, a Bill Cowher giving the game opening pep talk in the locker room, a Mike Ditka on the sidelines, a Pete Carroll's relationship with the players, and a Bill Parcells with the press. Viola, Charisma!!!
Joe Philbin just needs to be true to himself and the team and coach the best he knows how. The players know when a coach is real, and they'll respond to that... whatever the personality.Zounds, Stringer Bell, Rocky Raccoon and 5 others like this. -
Amongst all the sad vitriol going on in this thread, did anybody notice WE WON THE GAME? Amongst all the criticism of Philbin (let me preface this saying I am not one of his greatest fans), has anybody noticed we are 4-1 the last five games? And 4-2 since losing two of our starters on an already horrific OL?
I don't care if Philbin is Caspar Milktoast, if he hold this team together through all the on and off field distractions to get us into the playoffs or even just a 9-7 record, it seems obvious that he has the players support and backing. They are playing hard for Philbin, and that speaks tons more to me than his post game speeches do.Rocky Raccoon and Bpk like this. -
I'll agree it looked bad that we let it get that far, but at the end of the day we beat the steelers - that's all that matters. It's a win. They had to pull a desparation never try in regulation type play so they were beat already. Then it fell short. So we beat 'em again. We win. -

I always thought Parcells was an ahole, you don't need charisma to be a great coach did you ever watch Shula's press conferences, what you need is a great QB and Philbin is got one.Fin D likes this. -
All that matters is if you'd hire him to speak at your own event. Can he hold a crowd's attention?
Not enough tap dancing, imo. A cane and boater hat would help as well. -
I get the feeling he's just an older guy, almost playing the "papa smurf" kinda role. His steadiness is what commands the respect. When the phins win something big, i'm sure he'll get the gatorade bath like any other coach.
Agree with what others have said - you have to be true to yourself, many different leadership styles. When he says "I'm proud of the men in this room" that's his "ra ra" type moment. -

those speeches are staged for the public and some people are not natural speakers, notice he has notes to refer to I'm sure so he hits all the points he wants to make. don't care about the dog an pony show, what happens behind closed doors is much more important and based on the play of the team recently I'd say he has their attention.
as for the final play, good teams seem to get those plays to go their way. in the recent past we would have lost that game in a heart breaker fashion. not saying we are there but I think this team is starting to turn the corner. -
I would also say all the RahRah speech stuff means nothing of the players don't believe in your plan/scheme/vision.
Philbin isn't rahrah but it doesn't mean the players don't get behind his vision.DOLPHAN1 likes this. -

He's saying that this team is winning in spite of its coach.?
The angle here I think he's taking is the team was so disrespected nationally, all of their character being defamed, that inside that locker room is where the chemistry and unity is coming from...
Dpate thinks that the team because of how it's lost leads amongst some other things is poorly coached ?

just another question: if the players were winning in spite of the coaching staff would they buy in enough to execute the game plan or plays themselves? my guess is not. I think the one that should have destroyed this team may have actually solidified them instead. Philbin showed the players he had their backs and I think that removed any doubt from the players. addition by subtraction sometimes equates.djphinfan likes this.
