Good. Didn't want to trade a 2nd for him.

 

The coaches knew what they had along the offensive line. They knew early that Martin couldn't play. I'm convinced that Albert was a target of the coaching staff but that Ireland wouldn't cough up more than a 3rd.

Let's hope this can be revisited this offseason and we can secure at least one critical part of the offensive line.

you're right tho, I'm glad we didn't trade for Albert, had we had him maybe Ireland's still the GM, so we definitely dodged a bullet there.

 

Ireland was in a tough spot. Admit you built a shotty foundation or risk having the house collapse on you.

I'm not denying he is a good LT. Just didn't feel comfortable trading a second round pick for him on top of extending him to a large deal.

I don't fault Ireland for not giving up a 2nd and a contract extension for Albert, but he played the game and lost. He wanted Long back, but Long left and by that time the tackle market had dried up. I'm glad Ireland's finally gone.

 

Who was ultimately responsible for the roster, Irelad or Philbin? That's right, Ireland. And he blew it, as usual, with this and the Martin/Albert thing. I'm no big Philbin fan, but chalk one up for him as well as per Albert vs. Martin and this is just another reason to crack a beer in celebration of Ireland finally getting his fat butt kicked out the door.

 

We are gonna need two tackles this off season..and they wont be cheap. I for one would have rather foregone all the crap we endured with Martin and taken Albert. Who knows what might have been

Ireland was the GM, he always made the final call, and that power was pretty important to him seeing as how he turned down a raise that would strip him of those powers and decided to just leave. he didn't have to get rid of any of those guys just because Philbin asked, just like he didn't have to and refused to get rid of Incognito when Philbin wanted him gone, and he didn't have to acquire a guy just because Philbin wanted him, like Brandon Albert.

 

I agree but i'd like to see a mixture of FA and draft picks. I dont think picking 3-4 OL in the draft and hoping is the answer.

Martin was awful, he's a good example of how important balance is to an OT. Philbin was right on that one.

 

I kind of disagree. The key factor is whether uou feel the player will be motivated after his pay day. I also feel like people slightly over value draft picks after the first round. Not to say they aren't valuable, but chances are good that pick won't turn out to be an Albert, so given the choice I'd trade it for the semiyoung proven player every time given the cap space won't kill my team long term.

Actually if your fear was that he wouldn't stay motivated, I don't disagree because as fans we can't know that. Its somethingnonly insiders would know.

 

Remember reading that in the 2012 draft Ireland had Martin and Cordy Glenn rated equal? Glenn went a pick before ours, but had he not been taken there is a 50/50 chance that given the choice of both that Ireland would have still taken Martin. Good riddance to him.

 

I was PISSED when martin went to Buffalo the pick before, but yeah with the focus on the ZBS instead of the best OT available the idiot went with Martin, who isn't even close to Glenn, a freaking road grader with feet good enough for LT- imagine him teamed up with Jake Long instead of Martin. Then if we had Evan Mathis or Donald Thomas at RG... then we would have had a sweet OL. Coulda shoulda woulda.

 

Why would you want Jake Long at this point? I don't disagree with the rest. Just wonderibg why Long.

 

Martin really rewarded Ireland for the faith he put in him.

Well, for one I've always liked him. Second of all, in spite of the late season ACL injury he had an excellent season for the Rams. He was the rock of our OL, and he was missed big time on a O-line that turned out to be awful. Him at LT vs Martin was a joke.

 

You got that one right, and if the FO fumbles on fixing the OL this off season RT might get crippled in 2014.

 

Its not just the ACL though. Its chronic injury concerns.

He actually started off through the first 4-5 games far worse than Martin. Even though Martin sucked people here were still claiming it as a win for us.

Jake did bounce back and play very very well for a stretch but the n got injured like he always does. The injury concerns make me not want him anywhere near our roster ever again unless its a cheap incentive driven deal. He obviously wouldnt have taken that here.

To each his own though.

 

Long had a very solid season, and when I saw the Rams play I keyed on him, he was excellent. Maybe the best I've seen him play. Quicker than I expected and a road grader as usual. He got beat early a few times during the early part of the season, and iirc one bad play against the Cowboys got a lot of airplay, but the dude was solid, bottom line. Big blow for the Rams, but they'll have a shot at Matthews or Robinson as well as Long expected back next year.

 

Its fair enough. Like I said my only issue is the concern of his injury history, it seems like from now on he will start off average, play great, thrn boom injury.

If he was healthy of course I'd want him.

 

I hear what you're saying, but my preference, by far, was to have him back in 2013. Everyone points to the late ACL injury, and given his injury track record the point is valid. But still, he's a heck of a player.

 

Was always hesitant about paying Albert but he had a good year. Considering the mess Jeff made of the second round (again) ... well glad to be rid of him.

 

And what exactly do you guys think the cap would look like now had that deal been done. Ireland was screwed no matter what he did or didn't do

 

Wallace wasnt here yet. So not bad at all. Ill take Albert over Wallace any day...and I like Wallace.

 

Doesn't matter now, just acquire LT Jared Veldheer, RG Jon Asamoah and Zach Strief RT,then draft OC/OG Gabe Ikard,and move Pouncey to LG.

Draft James Hurst to be the swing tackle.
