I don't know yet, but they've got flexibility. They have their "core" guys filled out(HB/TE/WRx2), and a bunch of reasonably good/cheaper prospects(Sims/Egnew/Clay/Binns/Gibson/Matthews and potentially Leach) to pull the team in a certain group of packages. Tight end has the most resources invested and flexibility in that area.

No it wasn't. Rice saw more carries the 2 seasons before Leach arrived.
He had 1 TD per 26 touches with Leach and 1 TD per 56 touches without.

    Furthermore,
The 2 years before Leach, Rice had 84 redzone carries for 9 TDs.
2 years with Leach saw 83 redzone carries for 18 TDs.

Arian Foster had 1 TD per 20 touches and a 4.9 avg with Leach, 1 TD per 25 touches and 4.2 avg without.

No deal is done between the Dolphins and Vonta Leach, but both sides are VERY interested in one another.

Hmm, could be a savvy vet who decided to skip mandatory mini camp. Suspect he'll be signed soon enough, FB's work for relative cheap.

IMO, other than Wallace this would be the most exciting free agent signing of this off season. Really hope it happens.

Same here, way I see it there is a good piece just hanging out on the mkt due to the league undervaluing the position now.

How often is a premium player still on the mkt this late in the process?

I don't think I've ever seen a team lose so many key contributors in one offseason. Reed, Lewis, Williams, Pollard, Ellerbe, Kruger on defense, Birk, Boldin, Leach on offense. I almost feel sorry for them.

Sort of, Newsome is a top notch GM and if Lewis and Reed and Birk did not pass the culture on, then they are in deep trouble..but suspect they did..add in Harbaugh and they'll be fine.

I was trying to think of which FA signing was my favorite and I don't have one. What has me excited is how the pieces fit together. I think we entered the off-season with a goal to add play makers and offensive pieces that would spread the opponent's D and players on D that would pressure the QB and generate TOs. I love how those needs were identified, how they were communicated from the coaches to the FO and how they were addressed. I think the pieces they added are very complimentary to each other. They fit the scheme. And BTW I think that Leach would be another smart, complementary addition.

Without a strong running game, this team could ultimately flop. The excitement for Lamar miller is not enough. Leach would be a big time addition for this inexperienced offense, but we also need another RB to step up or we'll be forced to bring in a vet.

As for the theories on the offenses alignment: While Keller is a strong option spread wide, remember that this team wanted Tavon Austin after giving 3 Wrs as well as Keller good money. When that fell through they made it clear they still wanted a slot Wr when they didn't have to.

I agree Lane has been decidedly disappointing. Time to move on and Leach is I guess Philbin's man.

Not so fast. This is not a slam and dunk

The New York Daily News reports the Giants are "pondering a last-ditch effort" to sign free agent FB Vonta Leach.

Leach's agent mentioned the Giants as a team that was interested in his client following his release from the Ravens last week, but this is the first time we've seen it from a credible news source. New York is "worried" about the status of in-house FB Henry Hynoski (knee), and it is prepared to up its offer. Leach is expected to make a decision on his next team "early next week.

The Ravens are still "quietly monitoring" the availability of free agent FB Vonta Leach.

In other words, they haven't completely ruled out re-signing him. The Baltimore Sun concedes the Dolphins "appear to the the front-runner" to land Leach, but he probably would have already signed with them had Miami's offer knocked off Leach's socks. Before releasing Leach on June 11, the Ravens proposed the Pro Bowler a one-year, $2 million contract "loaded with incentives."

Eventually, yes. For 2013? I'm not so sure. It's tough to avoid underachieving after a Super Bowl win even under the best circumstances, after the attrition they've suffered it'll be even harder. Don't forget, they were never an elite team last year. They were a good team that strung 4 good games together at precisely the right time.

I give zero fukks whether we sign Leach or not. He's a great blocker, he could help offset losing Fasano in the run game. But it's not a major concern one way or the other. I'm just glad we're reduced to speculating about who the FB, 5th WR, backup DE, etc will be, as opposed to wondering who the next QB, Head Coach, etc will be. Sign of the (good) times...

Arguably, he is the best pure FB in the NFL and we have a weakness there so it would be a very significant upgrade for us. We'd likely have to overpay but that's basically how free agency works for the most part (see Mike Wallace).

I would love to have the guy - though if those other teams are in the hunt and Baltimore is also trying to get back into the game the price could be driven up beyond where we would be interested.

Was just thinking about this, not sure if it was already mentioned, but Leach & Wallace would compliment each other greatly. Plus, not only would Leach impact play action deep to Wallace but he'd also open up the play-fake rollout/bootleg stuff with our athletic QB as well.

I love his blocking but Leach kinda pigeon holes the offense, no?

I like the Wallace-Hartline-Keller-Clay-Miller group better. They can go traditional 2RB 2WR 1 TE, 2 TE 2WR, split Keller and/or Clay out wide in a 3 or 4 wide, or even go empty depending on who the defense has on the field.

A single blocking specialist really shouldn't be hamstringing the offense, and it wouldn't be a huge % of snaps necessarily.

I agree with Disgustipate; it won't pidgeon-hole the offense. Leach would just be a part of it when they want to go with a blocking FB. You can still use Charles Clay in multiple ways as they've done in 2011 and 2012 out of the backfield, in the slot, off the line, etc. as you alluded to.

That being said, Leach has caught 15 and 21 passes the last two years. Last year, with 21 catches, he totaled 143 yards (6.8avg), with 7 first downs. Jorvorskie Lane had 11 receptions for 79 yards; so it's not like Leach is a totally one-dimensional player; and his average is nearly on par with Lane's.

Just saw it go by on the NFL Network Ticker, but it said that Vonta Leach told Sirius XM Radio today that, "There's no rush to sign with a team". The longer this drags out, the more likely I think it is that he ends up back in Baltimore or returns to Houston.
