Hall-of-Fame wide receiver Paul Warfield already had established himself as one of the best players in the National Football League before he was traded to the Miami Dolphins by the Cleveland Browns in January of 1970 in exchange for a first-round draft pick. But his arrival, which coincided with the arrival of Hall-of-Fame Head Coach Don Shula, helped vault Miami into rarified air, peaking with The Perfect Season of 1972.
During Warfield’s five seasons in the aqua and orange he was selected to five Pro Bowls and the Dolphins compiled a combined regular-season record of 57-12-1. They appeared in three consecutive Super Bowls (VI, VII and VIII), winning two as Warfield caught 156 passes for 3,355 yards (a 21.5 average) and 33 touchdowns.
