Noise Complaint at Luke AFB, AZ Luke AFB is west of Phoenix and is rapidly being surrounded by civilization that complains about the noise from the base and its planes, forgetting that it was there long before they were. A certain lieutenant colonel at Luke AFB deserves a big pat on the back. Apparently, an individual who lives somewhere near Luke AFB wrote the local paper complaining about a group of F-16s that disturbed his/her day at the mall. When that individual read the response from a Luke AFB officer, it must have stung quite a bit. The complaint: 'Question of the day for Luke Air Force Base: The response: Regarding 'A wake-up call from Luke's jets' (Letters, Thursday): Yeah, it happened snopes.com: Wake-Up Call To his credit, the man who originated the complaint, a US Navy and Vietnam veteran, issued a heart-felt apology.
Love it, love it, love it! Coming from a military family I am often dismayed and disheartened by the ignorance of a few. Thanks for sharing this!
I saw this about a month ago. People dont realize that when the Air-force are doing menuvers, they cant just fly wherever the hell, whenever the hell they want. Indeed there are actually VERY strict flight restrictions they have to and are glad to follow. God Bless Capt. Jeremy Fresques, his loved ones and family
People are always complaining about the "noise" coming from Luke, but as a military brat I actually welcome the fly by noises. Its a cool story in the way of "insert foot into mouth," but its also very sad to hear about Capt. Fresques. I am also glad to hear that the complainer apologized about the incident... I know I would feel like a p.o.s. after knowing why the jets were flying the way they did.
Yep, the F-16s and F-18's fly out of Davis Monthan directly over my head much of the day, albeit they are considerably higher by the time they pass my house. Regardless, I usaully stop and watch, and occasinally say a silent prayer and hello from the ground.
Interestingly enough, this complaint came from a military vet. There is often some intense rivalry between the different branches and I'd wonder if that had anything to do with this ex vet feeling the "Air Farce" hot dogs seemed to be showing off rather than doing legit manuevers. Wouldn't surprise me at all. We recently moved near an Air Force base ourselves. I've seen complaints reported in the paper but in my opinion it's cool as hell to see these jets flying overhead. Dosen't bother me a bit and I don't understand why people would move near a base knowing fly overs will be a regular occurrence.
Good Lord, I hope this had nothing to do with branch rivalry! Just as you said, if you move near a military base you should expect fly overs to be a way of life. Duh!
Exactly. I spent my 3rd grade living right next to Norfolk Naval Air Base. They run night maneuvers, mostly midnight. Didn't have a problem with that. And we're talking AV-8B's and F-14's. Doesn't get much louder than that.
Who is the jackass that could possibly think the F-16's pilots are Tom Cruise wannabes, who, in my opinion couldn't be a gnat the pilots ***, and are so noisy? Perhaps, the writer might think that the sound of 747s flying into The World Trade center, or the Pentagon, or the field in Pennsylvania sound better!! The writer needs to understand that without these men and women making the ultimate sacrifice, they would not have the freedom of going to the mall at all, or writing that stupid letter. I personally think the sound of the military aircraft is one that should be recognized by every man, woman and child living in the United States, and those men and women of the armed forces should be an idol to us all!!
We get these hippie Melvyns complaining every year when the Blue Angels are in town practicing the week before Seafair. **** them.
I grew up an Air Force brat so it was normal to see and hear these things every day, but I never got tired of hearing them. Still today, I get chills when these guys fly over, where ever I am. They are my Heros. REALLY.
Especially on Memorial day. They always fly in formation a couple of times throughout the day here. Nothing like 6 F18 Superhornets to get the goosebumps standing on ned. They also do a HUGE Air Show here every year. One year I was filming my son's soccer game when we first had a B-1 fly over. Of course I started filming that. Within about 2 minutes a B-2 Stealth flew in the same flight path. Absolutely incredible footage.
I think some people forget the most basic reason why the military runs maneuvers...it's called PRACTICE! This practice enables them to keep us safe when push comes to shove. I say THANK YOU!
Exactly.....what the eff is all I can say. I've seen them fly over a few times, not recently, as Homestead has been so rediced. But the few times I did see them, I was like "AWESOME !" Why in the world someone would complain is beyond me.
