Off Season summary for the Pittsburgh Steelers
Coaching changes:
Much to the Steelers dismay both coordinators left for different opportunities and the Steelers brought in exemplary replacements. Chan Gailey and Rob Ryan.
FA pickups:
Lendale White was brought in to stop the Steelers troubles in the red zone, who last yr finished very low in red zone TD %. With White and Rhodes added to the roster a weakness becomes a strength.
Jamal Williams adds not only great vet presence and a huge frame in the middle, but he also is a great locker room influence on our younger DT's. Along with Jolly, Greg White, and Alex Brown, the front line of the D should free up the LB's to cause mayhem. Brackett, who at 29 is one of the best MLB's in the game along with Bullock and Chaseburn followed by great depth highlighted by Clint Sessions.
2008 Pro Bowl starter Courtland Finnergan, added with Pro Bowl safety Troy Polamalu, Ryan Clark, and Ike Taylor, with depth coming from Drayton Florence and Tyrone Carter, makes arguably the best secondary in the NFL.
Another weakness in the Steeelers in 2008 was its inconsistent and weak offensive line. This too was addressed in FA. Dom Raiola and Floyd Womack, along with the resigning of Max Starks, compliment the newly acquired Diem, and Bobbie Williams nicely.
Antwan Randle El who set a career high in receptions in 2008, returns to Pittsburgh, as well as Mike Furrey and Brandon Lloyd, with James Hardy and Lavelle Hawkins coming in by trades as well as Alge Crumpler, give Ben alot of options in the passing game.
The 2009 Draft:
The Steelers felt the best way to go in the draft was depth. The Offensive line needed youth and with that idea, the Steelers drafted Michael Oher, Max Unger and Greg Isdaner.
Sammie Lee Hill was a beast in college and under the 4-3 in a couple of yrs, should be a solid if not PB caliber player.
Mortty Ivy has the potential to play Strong side or middle linebacker and is a welcome addition.
Mike Goodson adds a good receiving back to our back chart. And has a high ceiling. -
