So i am in the market for a new tv and have been eyeing the samsung 51" plasma tv model PN51D550C1. It appears to have a good cost/quality ratio and has 3d capabilities as well.

My question is can someone really break down the pros and cons to a new age plasma? I feel like my preconceptions are based on old plasmas. Ive read reviews and checklists but just looking for an opinion. Also is the above mentioned tv worth the price of 899 ive found?

$899 doesn't seem like a terrible price for a 51" TV, especially a Samsung which are among the best in TVs from what I've read and seen, but you could probably do better. I don't know too much new Plasmas. I would really recommend scouring sites like Slickdeals and fatwallet for deals. They list deals on TVs nearly every day. The discussion forums on the individual deals usually contain a ton of information.

I'd go with an LED over a plasma. Newer tech, lasts longer, uses a lot less energy, no threat of burn-in, etc.

I got a few in my trunk exactly like the one you just mentioned. For $800 I'll throw in a free sound system.

That's not a terrible price, you may find better than that these days. I have a Samsung plasma I bought in 2006. Despite everybody telling me how quickly it was going to wear out or how all kinds of images would be burned into the screen neither of those things have happened. The picture is still as good as when I bought it. I really enjoy the bright rich color you get. As long as you're not trying to run it 24/7 I don't think screen burning or the electricity is a big issue.

I went to best buy today to look at all the tvs and honestly the LEDs just seemed so much prettier to me. Right now im finding a 46 inch samsung smart led for about 940 and it looks beautiful. Amazon has it for 1139 but its cheaper elsewhere

all LEDs look good in stores till you take them home. Id go with panasonic plasma, especially if youre a gamer, i have a a 42'' 720 lower end model i bought it since it was really cheap $300 and i love it. in the end it comes down to what looks good to YOUR eyes.

anyways i got a response for you.
