So I was working in the yard last week and realized I had pulled out some poison ivy branches (uggh).
well it started on my arms about a 5 days ago and now it is all over my legs and arms and continues to spread to some unfriendly places. This stuff is evil.
I've been using a hair dryer to soothe the itch and it works great but it is still spreading. I went to Urgent Care yesterday and they gave me a steroid shot but it is not working. I've tried Calamine, and a few over the counter sprays and nothing is killing it.

I have read a lot of the things on the internet but I need a first hand remedy from someone out there who would be able to help me please. I know there has to be some outdoor types here who deal with this stuff on a regular basis.
This stuff is driving me crazy!

it goes against what you're told not to do but i scratch the ever loving **** out of it and then put calamine lotion on it. works for me, but i've never had it that bad.

my mom was a professional gardener for 20+ years and this is what she told me to do

Take a hot bath and throw plenty of oatmeal in it. It helps.

Also, get aggressive with medical personnel and don't leave until you get some prednisone prescribed; it's rough medicine but it will end that ****.

is that "Don't scratch your nuts" or "don't scratch you're nuts"?

cuz there are definitely two very distinct meanings there.

definitely don't scratch your nuts though. that's just asking for it.

My buddy at work just got over poison ivy. He told me the only thing that stopped the agony was- get this - bleach ! Now,I dont recommend this but he swore by it. Wet towel dipped in bleach, but then again he only had it on his arms.

Scrub well with the oatmeal, really get it into the skin in the affected areas. Afterward apply come cortisone-10 ointment; it's dirt-cheap at Costco.

I hear if you pull them up by their roots and roll around in it it will cure any outbreaks you may already have.

    thanks for asking
i think im a little better in the itching department tonight but i still look like hell
big red and purplish patches all over my legs and arms. they are covered.
between the oatmeal bath the calamine rub down in the shower then drying it all with the hair dyer it is a rough process. i wouldnt wish this stuff on my worst enemy. i think the prednisone is working because the fire has calmed but i still have a long way to go. it is still spreading on my stomach a little.

I'm telling you. Now that most of the itch is almost gone, keep your skin nice and hydrated and let your body fight this thing.

IT RUBS THE LOTION ON ITS SKIN, or else the ivy spreads again.

Last year when I bought my house, my backyard fence was COVERED in it, I mean covered like Wrigley field.....I had to get rid of it, as I have a 6 year old....I did the thing, cut the roots, sprayed it, came back a week later, pulled the roots off it, and dude I caught that sheet something fierce....as my friend said "looked like I ate a poison ivy sandwich" I went to urgent care, caught the shot, and it worked very well after 48 or 72 hours, which Killa is right around now.....you will be clearing up shortly...

The thing I found most helpful was.....this..I rubbed a butterknife on all the areas loosey and gently to irratate the areas, get them oozing the puss, but not enough to draw blood.....then I dumped a sheetload of bleach on it.....rubbed it in, waiting like 20 minutes, and then washed it off......bleach kills that stuff quick style.....also use that alcohol gel to dry it out.....this seem like crazy measures but you have to dry that stuff out.....the lotion is designed to buy more lotion, and doesnt relief crap....oatmeal is okay....Poison Ivy on your beans is the worst.....
hope this helps, no go bleach yourself alla Michael Jackson...

ahh the lovely poison ivy,i can roll around in the stuff for days and it doesn't affect me but i hear just because you havent doesnt meen you cant.another popular saying around here is that if you get it to get rid of the clothes you were wearing(including unerbritches and sweat rag) as it can transfer from one thing to another(if you do wash them with a lil bleach and seperate from other household clothes). just a little tip incase you get it again as it may be a reason it kept spreading along with the itch.
