As much as I love the record, it's time our franchise's identity wasn't tied to something that happened 40 years ago.
I forget which season, but I remember another disappointing loss a few seasons ago happening the same week the last undefeated team lost. I think that timing makes it worse. You're already mad at watching a loss and possibly the playoffs go up in smoke, then someone says.. "but a team 40 years ago keeps their streak going!" It's like having your house and everything in it burn down, then someone runs out and says, "hey we found a pair of old shoes that didn't get destroyed!" Hurray... Don't get me wrong, I'm happy for the 72 team and the fans lucky enough to have watched them; it's an accomplishment that all Dolphin fans should be proud of. Personally speaking, it's just harder for me to care as a fan born 13 years after the fact when our current situation has been... difficult. If we were 7-2 it'd be a lot easier to be excited about it, though I don't hate the 72 team or anyone that celebrates them.
And from a past celebratory perspective, that's the only sentiment that's valid. So, lets embrace it. The '72 team cant help the current team or regime.....so its not the '72's problem. And I agree, all Dolphins fans should be proud of the one and only undefeated perfect SB season. Missing the point is when any current fan is being mad at the reference to '72 because the current squad is laying eggs for the present or future of this franchise. Whether this current squad returns to glory or not, so be it, its not the '72 squad fault, but it is a great legacy for this franchise. Congrats to the perfect '72 squad....the benchmark for every franchise as well as our current squad to measure against!
This ole record is all we have lately. I was never threatened by the Falcons, but happy none the less. Still population 1.
As much as I love the 72 team it's hard to get exited about preservation of perfect season after the debacle of a football game played today.
Right now I would settle for a 9-7 record from these Dolphins. I was a season ticket holder for the 1972 Dolphins. They were a great team and it was a great time. Unfortunately that was then and now is now. Writing about an undefeated team when we have to continue to suffer through mediocrity, year after year, is just rubbing salt in the wound.
