Great pickup, but that was the supplemental draft. He did cost them a 2nd rd pick this year, but my point is that in a deep WR draft they could have and should have drafted at least one more WR .

Look at what the Bills did- drafted Woods and Goodwin to get help for Manuel, then stole Da'Rick Rogers after the draft as a free agent. I wouldn't be surprised if Rogers ends up starting for Buffalo.

ps TE Chris Gragg could bring some speed to that offense as well, interesting player.

That is where Lamar Miller and Dustin Keller come in. 60 million dollar decoy dictates coverage.

I sure hope they single-cover with him. Tanny errs on the side of overthrow with Wallace to this point, so I'd expect a long gain before a pick.

That's why speed is so important. As good as any CB is, if they can't match speed, it's going to be a problem matchup. See Revis Island vs. Ted Ginn. Teddy's best highlight reel plays came against him.

If the season opened tonight, it would be a beat down...but thankfully for us the season does not start tonight and we have time to get the offense ready. Right now, we aren't close. We better get it fixed soon, or we'll be 0-5 by the mid-late October.

If you base it solely on preseason the Browns will win that division. But...it is preseason so I'll slow it down.

The real pro's have moved the line in Cleveland's favor though and that doesn't surprise me, if we got our *** kicked week 1 I can't say I would be shocked. I'm far more concerned with RT not getting sacked 8 -10 times than iam Brandon Weeden picking us apart.

I expect a lot of max protect packages and screens to Lamar, Hartline and Gibson will have to get open quick. I don't see us having the time in the pocket to make Cleveland respect Wallace's deep ability all that much.

    Scary game.

The Browns are probably the worst team on our schedule, outside of the Jets. Add to that the fact that they're missing their best WR and are breaking in a new coaching staff, and if we cant beat them and look good at doing it, I'm extremely worried. We have the Colts, Falcons, Saints, Ravens and Patriots in five of the six games after that. 99.9% of people would say that they are ALL much better than Cleveland. If we arent good enough to stomp the worst team in that bunch, how do we beat the rest?

For now, Im going to be optomistic and say something along the lines of 27-13 Miami.

I actually think they have a decent shot to win the division. Their defense is physical, talented, and on par with the Ravens & Bengals.... and the offense seems better across the board than Baltimore's and as good as Cincy's if Weeden's play continues ascending.

    us too. lol.
Rubin & Taylor are 670 pounds of tough beef to push around, and Desmond Bryant is no slouch at RE. Their corners can tackle, strong safety can tackle, and linebackers are decent verse the run too. IMO they have top 10 run defense potential and should give ours a run for its money.

Since we're posting news about the Browns, that guard Jason Pinkston that went out and had to be replaced by an awful rookie is expected to only miss the preseason but be back in time for the regular season so he will play against Miami. Also Barkevious Mingo (whose brother is named Hughtavius, not joking) is released from the hospital and somehow only expected to miss a damn week. With a bruised lung. NFL, go figure.

I've watched their OL closely, they're very good in pass pro and very average in run blocking. Their receivers/TE aren't any good, their QB isn't any good either, especially vs teams that can generate a decent pass rush. Everything they do depends on being able to establish the run, which they won't be able to do vs Miami. It'll be tough for us to get the run game going as well but we have a passing game that can at least move the chains here and there, plus a QB who can use his legs and doesn't crumble when the pressure comes.

Not expecting an easy win, Cleveland is built to keep games close. Over 4 quarters though, I like our depth, ability to move the sticks, and control field position. Between the QBs I see Weeden as significantly more likely to make the big mistake. I see our offense as more likely to create explosive plays (especially with Gordon out) and our defense as more likely to create TOs.

outside a few teams it really is pointless to determine if you have a hard schedule. Who know what these teams will look like when we play them.

I could see the browns being better than the Bucs, bills, jets, Colts, Steelers, etc...

Hey don't get me wrong, I still think we win the game by a close margin. Their offensive personnel is a solid compliment to Norv Turner's scheme and have a lot of talented pieces in Weeden, Gordon, Little, Cameron, and Richardson that are still on the rise. That's a decent offense if they play to potential.

Just found out Usama Young was in Oakland now. He wasn't very good but he was their top FS from what I saw last year. Ward is more of an in the box safety than a cover guy. Buster Skrine plays with a target on his back. Haden is a baller, haven't seen much of Chris Owens, he looks like an improvement on Sheldon Brown/Skrine though.

I'm very interested in how they'll approach Mike Wallace. Horton has a history of being very aggressive with his pressure packages. Not a math expert but if the defense sends 5 and puts a safety over Wallace they've got 4 guys to cover the other 4 eligibles which IMO is more of an opportunity than a problem. Hartline vs Owens, Gibson vs Skrine, Keller/Clay vs Sheard/Kruger, Miller vs Jackson/Robertson, I like all of those matchups and unlike Weeden Tannehill can extend/make plays with his feet.

The other option is sending five with a safety in the middle or no deep safety at all. They have Haden so I think they'll be willing to risk it at least on occasion. Again, more of an opportunity than a problem IMO.

Norv Turner likes to run the ball and stretch the defense, and you're right Cleveland has the pieces to make it work. But Gordon is out so who's gonna stretch the field, Travis Benjamin aka Clyde Gates South? I don't think they're going to have success running on our front, I just don't see it. They have elite pass pro so (against other teams) Weeden will have plenty of time to scan and throw. Not sure that'll happen vs Miami though. Our pass rush looks a little different this year. Vernon is a better pass rusher than Odrick. Odrick will see fewer snaps and be fresher on pass rush downs, ditto for Soliai and Starks b/c Odrick will be available to spell them more often. Wake/Vernon might see fewer snaps with Jordan available to spell them. Ellerbe and Wheeler are better blitzers than Dansby/Burnett, look for them to be pounding the A gaps to create 1 on 1s for the edge rushers. Marshall can come off the slot. Jones will come on occasion.

Weeden is garbage under duress, if we can get to him consistently it's lights out. Of the receivers you named, who's gonna discourage/punish Coyle from sending the heat?

No I agree, without Gordon it's not the same Turner-esque offense. It loses an element.

Just sayin though- we beat an outstanding Seattle defense despite a starting trio of Bess/Hartline/Fasano, so anything's possible if the D is playing well and the team is on top of its game. If we could do it with Bess/Hartline/Fasano/Bush as the starters, they could just as well do it with Bess/Little/Cameron/Richardson.

Fair enough. Anything is possible, but if we're talking matchups and handicapping the most likely outcome then Cleveland is a significant underdog IMO.

FYI Sportsbook has Miami as 1.5 point favorites @ Cleveland. Might be 2.5 or 3 by gametime.

I agree that they should be the underdog, especially since we're playing them at home in Sept rather than December. Although I'm not sure this is a game we can afford to make any early mistakes in.

Agreed. I can see them hanging for a while on defense but the offense won't be doing much of anything so the dam will break at some point.

The balance we have in the receiver core, how they can work certain parts of the field is comforting, I look for Matthews and Keller to have a good game in that one, they'll try and take our weapons away and might succeed a bit for a while, but if Matthews gets the ball in the middle, he's gonna be hard to bring down in the open field by a nickel or dime corner, Keller we know what's he capable of, and when that happens, Wallace time..

Watching Dion sims in the last game..I think I'm gonna say I misjudged him a bit, I just didnt know how he would move without the weight so I didnt do much of a projection, but I'll tell ya, he's done a few things from a coordination and balance perspective that were very impressive..

I dont give a sh&& if they play didnt count,There are not many tight ends who can do the perioutte/sideline catch that far downfield, it takes great hand/eye/athleticism...and when he turned on that quick dig by the endzone and almost got in..nice balance displayed for a large man..

Of all our opponents this season, the Browns are probably the most familiar with what you're calling "The Wallace Effect"... Wallace and Haden have faced each other repeatedly and the Browns know how to play him. That said, Wallace had very good results against them with Rothliesburger at QB in the past, but not so much with Batch, who under threw him and allowed Haden INTs...

I get the feeling this'll be a game where we have to pass early on in order to loosen up the defense. I'd come out in the 2 TE set w/ Clay/Keller and split one or both of them out wide. Get Kruger and/or Sheard out in space (and away from J Mart :shifty:) and attack the short areas with flares, option routes, and crossing routes, anything to get a horizontal stretch. Maybe even some read option directed at Mr. Sheard. Mix in some screens and draws, maybe take a shot early if they're getting over aggressive. Make a few first downs, go up tempo, and then go to the run game.

Im as bummed as everyone else about losing keller, but im not on the "our offense is doomed" bandwagon. Hes just a TE, and he was no vernon davis/jimmy graham. Are clay/sims/egnew better? no, but we can still do everything we were going to do with Keller, its just not as imposing.

Truth is, its up to ryan tannehill. If he steps up this year, whose playing TE probably won't matter.
