The Dolphins got a full 16-game season from center Mike Pouncey in 2017 for the first time since 2012 and they’re expected to try for a repeat in 2018. In response to speculation that the team might move on from Pouncey in order to clear $7 million in cap space, Armando Salguero of the Miami Herald reports that the Dolphins have no plans to cut Pouncey this offseason. He adds that there are no plans to seek a pay cut or other salary adjustment for the veteran. Hip problems kept Pouncey off the field for most of the 2016 season and forced the team to keep his practice time to a minimum last season. That worked out in their favor on Sundays as Pouncey was one of the few reliable pieces they had on the offensive line. The injury could rear its head again at some point and leave the Dolphins shorthanded, but cutting Pouncey would definitely put them in that predicament when they already have holes to fill on the offensive line and elsewhere.
" The injury could rear its head again at some point and leave the Dolphins shorthanded, but cutting Pouncey would definitely put them in that predicament when they already have holes to fill on the offensive line and elsewhere. " Front office thinking... Why we don't ever go anywhere.... "leave the Dolphins short handed ", now theres an unusual circumstance we've gone through a doz times in the last doz years. Man there are several options out there to improve besides throwing the dice on the 9 mil. Pouncey injury crap game. It's like they don't realize the problem until they get into the season and the problem raises its obvious ugly head and the whole organization turns into deer looking into the head lights,,, wonder how did this happen ? AND THEN THEY DO IT AGAIN THE FOLLOWING YEAR.....
We always have “holes to fill”. And we always dont do something because it will create another hole. That’s the sign of mediocrity. So having done that approach with Wannstedt, Saban, Cameron, Sporano, Philbin and now Gase, do we continue patching or get the best players available.
Lot of hate on here for Pouncey but facts remain he played full season for 1st time in forever, and imo, wasn’t the dumpster fire that people expected/claim. Gase and FO love him and view him as leader of team, as do the players by all accounts. When you put all that together (veteran respected team leader coming off a consistent season) he ain’t going nowhere, and rightly so in my view.
All the more reason to move on from him. The fact is we were lucky to get a full season from him last year. His trade value will never be higher than it is right now. But hey, that's the kind of thing successful organizations like the Patriots do. Why would we do that?
History says Pouncey will get injured this coming season -not that he has suddenly found a way to stay healthy. I'd still like to have him around, but at a reduced salary. Say in the $6-7 million range.
Yes lets create more holes, get rid of the captain at calling out defensive alignments, reshuffle the line AGAIN with someone else that may or may not get hurt. That sounds like a sound move.
Na leave it alone... that seems to work so well.... we sure don't want to put any holes in the holes we already have. Where do they teach you to talk like this? In some Panama City sailor wana hump hump bar or is this getaway day, and your last shot at his whiskey. Sell crazy someplace else, we're all stocked up here The Dolphins managed Pouncey’s practice time last season in hopes of keeping him on the field. And yes he started all 16 games.. "But of all the pieces and parts of an NFL team that need to move in synchronicity, none are as crucial as the offensive line. And that cohesion comes from tireless practice time together, as players learn and adapt to the strengths, weaknesses, and tendencies of their fellow line mates. And when the core player of that unit, the guy calling out blocking assignments and making the decisions of which players are going where, who is blocking whom, and setting up the first line of attack on every play, the center is crucial to the offensive line’s success. This could well explain why, at times when Pouncey did miss some time during games this past season, and backup Jake Brendel took over, that the team seems to perform better: Brendel practiced all week, while Pouncey rested up those bad hips on the sideline."
Anyone else find it odd that Armando reports that it's from an NFL source as opposed to a team or Dolphins source? Makes me think Miami may have their eye on someone in FA or the Draft, but with limited cap space at the moment, perhaps Mike Pouncey is Plan B if they don't get the player they covet.
James will get his 5th year rescinded and be an FA. So you're going to cut James to clear $9.341 million in cap space and then Pouncey. The reality is we already have at lease one hole at guard/tackle to fill and now you want to cut 2 more on the line. Sell some crazy my arse. Where do they TEACH you to gut the entire line and magically come up with 3 starters. Oh that's right Brendal is the answer to it. There is no truth that the line needs to jell also. OK sure. And you can take your hump hump bull**** and shove it up you're.....
Easy there chief... " Where do they TEACH you to gut the entire line and magically come up with 3 starters ". .At the school of common sense, you ever hear of it. And I didn't say gut the entire line but if there are better options which realistically and clearly isn't out of the question I'd have no problem with it. You seem to already think you know my view as you are implicating by this post of pretty much Your made up ideas of my view. But since you seem interested, Pouncey because of injury can either leave be traded of lower substantially his contract. Rather spend that money on Norwell (Pouncey money might help) .. That takes care of one hole pretty much for sure and not involving crossing fingers for luck like the past 15 years of doing that and failure. Don't think we'd get Nelson (be gone by 11) but if we did WOW that would be 2 holes filled (formidably too) or plan 2,,, rd (2) Hernandez, Price, Wynn who are C/G's. Man if we could get Norwell, Nelson falls ( I know doubtful), or say a Hernandez Wynn or Price (one of two of these guys our friggin decade long OL problems are FINALLY pretty much a no problem anymore. Keep James if you want but not for 9+ mil. (damn is he getting that much I don't think so) Ya I know highly unlikely and more my personal wish but an off season of getting a OL for the future would be one hell of an off season IMO....and I think RT and Drake would probably be dancing in the streets...And it can be done the pieces are there. Looking at building a real team and not this fill in the planks for one year and a playoff visit as the goal....tired of that
Ian RapoportVerified account @RapSheet Franchise tag tidbits: The #Panthers are more likely to tag K Graham Gano than standout G Andrew Norwell, while the #Seahawks want to keep DL Sheldon Richardson long-term… but a tag is unlikely. ITS ALIVE ! ITS ALIVE... The dream lives on....lol at least for a little longer...
it does reek of "the lady doth protest too much, methinks". Tannenbaum could be eyeing Billy Price as Nick Mangold 2.0 in a trade down scenario and not want to tip his hand, or something like that. It'd be a dick move to cut Pouncey after the draft though, so maybe he retires?
You could definitely draft his eventual replacement and have him start at OG until Pouncey's contract expires or he gets injured again
Pouncey was terrible at guard. He's very expensive, and we only take a 2m dead money hit by cutting him. If the team can bring anyone else in at center, be it a veteran who's less expensive or a rookie, then its the right move.
One year after hip surgery you don' have your full strength in your legs. I guarantee you if he's healthy you'll see a huge improvement in his run blocking. He'll be a lot stronger in his drive blocking
There's practically no one behind him. I wouldn't hold your breath on Norwell, though it would be a nice step in having a decent offensive line for once.
IMAGINE LT Tunsil, McGlinchey G Norwell, Josh Sitton (32) C Price, Wynn or Ragnow G Nelson, Justin Pugh G/OT RT Cameron Fleming, Wynn, Justin Pugh Will Hernandez G UPET 6'2" 340 lbs... High priced 9 mil part time C Pouncey,...Juwan ? how much? and not needed ...Building for a real future and get as many of these guys as you can....now this year All at present available and Young and around for years..... If thats all we did it would be fin-nominal and the best thing we could do for a real future. See what Tannehill IS, Watch Drake and maybe CJ with a line in front of them.... Whats the worst we end up like most of our teams the last 15 years and hit 500, but we will at least have a OL. The fill this hole and open another one doesn't work,,, focus on the OL its THE area to FOCUS because its so far overdue and THE OPPORTUNITY IS THERE THERE"S A FUTURE And I'm not holding my breath
Well to be fair, if we avoided approaches that haven't worked for us in the past, we wouldn't have any options left open to us. We failed at drafting talent in middle rounds, late rounds, early round, and haven't done great with grabbing guys in free agency. Its mind boggling how we can get so many approaches wrong...
not sure why people are so attached to an overrated center who played his first full season in 6 years. and played mediocre at best. most well run teams would cut/restructure such a player
To be fair... He's missed 19 games in 7 years with 11 of those 19 coming in one season. That's less than 3 games per year on average and about 1 game per year if you take away his one IR season. (I'm not saying you should dismiss that season, but just pointing out the fact that he's been relatively healthy for 6 of 7 seasons) I'd guess that's pretty typical for his position. Saying that, I'm definitely concerned about his hips, and would love for him to either restructure his contract or be traded for a pick or player of need.
You have a good point ...and this isn't the same non functional approach which hasn't worked for 20 years. The old habitual process doesn't work...and this isn't even close to what we've done before. I mean come on you can see that can't you ? Spending scary money, working out and sacrificing to get some deals done focusing on a quality OL...Ya big time sacrifice but IMO worth it...again I agree the past crap of consciousness hasn't worked.. Free agents success????? So do we stop getting free agents cause of this ? Julius Thomas Jermon Bushrod Craig Larsen Kiko Alonso Byron Maxwell Jordan Cameron Jay Cutler Andre Branch Know I'm spittin into the wind.. And we aren't going anywhere of significance with the pasting a couple individual players on Off and Def. as much as we would for the future with a focus on the OL to this serious degree....Ya we skip the QB or TE, or LB to build the teams foundation. Foundation: a body or ground on which other parts rest and are built upon....OL brother (its really is that important)
