If you're talking about the throw that popped up and landed in the end zone, I see Wallace looking for the ball while it was in the air and not finding it until it was too late and about to hit the ground. I did not see him making the universal gesture that receivers make when they want a flag thrown for PI.
And 112 catches. Of course such a season would not be good enough for the anti-Wallace crowd around here. Honestly, I have no qualms with the kind of money Wallace is making, good for him, though as with most priority UFAs, he is overpaid. I guess he should have refused such an amount and told the Dolphins he wasn't worth it and preferred to settle for something much less so as to not feel guilty for making so much.
Wouldn't it be nice to see a star name player that is making big big dollars really work at getting better and improving his deficiencies? Wallace comes across in interviews as a reflective guy , says the right things but he hasn't shown a propensity to make negatives better . If he put in 50% of the extra time Reggie Bush did I doubt he'd have these continuing issues.
I have the game on DVR and I've watched that play several times. I am now watching it again and whoever thinks Wallace could have gotten both feet in bounds is completely high. Very high. He completely smoked Revis. There's no reason it should have been placed where it was. There was even room to lead it a bit inside, away from the sidelines. By the time Wallace caught and secured the ball, he was so out. The placement, speed and trajectory made it impossible. As for Vince the Big Belly Wilfork pressuring Tanne, that's nothing. Yeah, he was coming after him, but it had little effect. The play was slightly moving that way anyhow, Tanne was hardly effected by Wilfork. He barely noticed him or wasn't worried. He even stepped up into the throw. Wallace ran a very nice route for someone who can't run routes. .
As I recall, he had no drops on passes other than ones obstructed by a defender. I still need to rewatch the entire game though, so may change my mind.
I don't recall Wallace trying to get the ball that popped up in the endzone...He pretty much stopped immediately, gesturing and looking around. At least that was what I and everyone watching with me saw. I'd be extremely happy if he caught 16tds and 1300 yards. Would you be happy if Tannehill throws for almost 4k yards again with a positive td to int radio? Our would you still talk about things he needs to do to get better? Not everyone has an axe to grind with Wallace...I certainly don't. I just want to see him correct some off the flaws I see, just like you guys want Tannehill to correct his.
When you rewatch as I have twice , I think you'll have a different perspective. There was a pass go through his hands with no one around , he had to extend up but it should have been a routine catch and he also let a ball hit him right in his facemask. go to the link I posted at around the 45 second mark of the week 1 patriots Dolphins video , the entire play isn't there but the isolation on Wallace and Revis is , can't see how someone sees that and thinks it shouldn't have been caught by a decent /good receiver. Yes , not all wr's run that route and get open , that isn't the point. Ball was there for a pretty easy TD imo .
A little bit after that play, there was also the pass to Wallace which Tanne forced it into, at least, two defenders. Had he just arced it and lead him a bit.....easy TD. A little while after that play, there was the pass down the middle to Wallace where Tanne threw it like 5 yards too short and it was picked. Man, they really should have buried them more than they did, but I'm still very happy.
I just saw that overthrow to Clay in the corner of the end zone. Man, they should have won by 100 points or something.
McCain sacks Brady!! Man, it appears we have found our diamond in the rough but I don't want to jinx it.
I thought you guys were talking about a different pass. If it's the one that popped in the air Wallace was looking for the ball and when a defender made a move towards it he realized it was behind him. Never saw a motion for a flag. But I'll re-watch it.
and that Fumble..another bad throw that contributed mightily to the fumble. These are legitimate excuses.
As expected , and of course entitled but that doesn't change that you can be wrong and imo in this instance , are. CB's get beat ALL the time , happened week one , again , and again ... Ball was in bounds and the main reason it wasn't 6 was because Wallace poorly played the ball and didn't run under control . Tannehill had warts yesterday , but this was not one of them . That was on 11.
He didn't motion for the flag. Rather, he turned his body towards the ref and stuck his arms out, palms up in the universal "WTF!?!?" motion. He clearly prioritized "working the ref" above "finding the ball".
That's not a legitimate excuse for a fumble. It's really not. If you're accounting Tannehill's performance then he is accountable for when his ball placement is not ideal. But when you're accounting Mike Wallace's performance you don't see his fumble and say, ah well that's ok it wasn't your fault. And by the way he fumbled twice in the game, so...
The other fumble was of the variety of dumping the ball out of bounds close to the boundary, of which every receiver does it from time to time. The fumble in question was aided by a bad pass. There is no question about that. He gets hit in stride, he does not absorb that hit.
I guess my main point is that Neither guy, Wallace or Tannehill is great at their job, but Wallace is slightly better at his, and has a history of performance, while Tannehill does not. They need each other, to move past this debate though.
Excuse, excuse, excuse, excuse, excuse. Dude fumbled twice. He's responsible for that. Don't fumble the ball. Football 101.
He lost one fumble. On a terrible pass that set him up for a big hit. again..better ball placement...no fumble.
The fact that he didn't lose both fumbles was a matter of luck. The film does not support your account of him just fumbling the ball and pushing it out of bounds as he ran out. He actually had his back turned to the sidelines and was being tackled on a screen, the ball got poked out and it was just pure luck that the trajectory of the ball took it out of bounds instead of parallel to the sideline where it could have been recovered. Don't fumble the ball. Secure it. And bonus points if you don't keep blaming others for your mistakes.
Difference is... RT would say...yeh I should have placed the ball better, thats on me. Wallace would have said...yeh he should have placed the ball better, thats on him.
On a different note: Cant see Wallace making a block like #14.....check it out!!! Moreno doesnt score if Landry doesnt lay that boy out...
I know right....layed that boy out. I guarantee that got some applause during film review. This whole team is playing much more physical then I would have imagined. If you look at Hickeys pickups though..you can see he was going for that.
On a side note: I would like to thank FinD for this thread. It shows a lot of character. I am well aware that this is not an admission that you were wrong or that you are not conceding anything, just that you are able to give props where props are do I apologize that the thread may have gotten a bit derailed, but either way, kudos FinD.
The throw wasnt perfect, but it wasnt terrible either. The fumble was Wallace's fault, plain and simple. To blame Tanny for the fumble, well, its dumb.
Ill tell you one thing if IF IF! they can get on the same page this Offense is going to be impressive VERY impressive...Once they start hitting on a few of those long ones not only will it give us those quick strike points but with the guys the Dolphins have to take advantage of soft underneath coverage boy o boy lookout.
I didn't see it but I heard the announcers mention Wallace blocking downfield on a play. They were referring to the team stepping up after seeing Moreno run so hard.
I actually agree with Section on Wallace's lost fumble. He had to reach back to catch it and he got leveled at the same exact time he was bringing the ball around in front of him. It was just unfortunate timing and a good defensive play. That's not me trying to make an excuse for him. I'm just calling it like I saw it.
Well, it was close from what I remember. That's not saying Wallace doesn't need to step up a bit, he does, but I'm not going to look at that fumble as something to scream at the skies about. All though I did curse pretty loudly when it happened.
Agree that Tannehill's ball placement could have been better, but that fumble was the result of a defender's helmet hitting the ball. You can see it in the replay or in the image below from where the helmet is in the pic.
