What, no thread about this yet? My MGS4-bundled backwards compatible PS3 is on its last legs... well, okay, it still works, but the thing is loud and hot and ruins my enjoyment of games. It's a huge reason why I haven't bought many PS3 games and returned to PC gaming. Can't wait to buy a new model PS3 and not have to reduce the thermostat just to play a game.
Also, was watching a news video about this, and it mentioned that the slimmer will be louder than the slim. Keep that in mind and do your research. May not be worth it. And no, I can't link the video, i was just jumping from youtube video to another in a typical 2 hour binge. Google may provide some more insight, I haven't checked.
Where did you hear that the slimmer is louder than the slim? That defies logic and die shrinking... I'm sure that's wrong. And the PS4 is probably a 2014 device.
I've made it this far into the life of a PS3 without picking 1 up. I think I may hold out for the PS4, but this is surely tempting.
I know I have! This is the first Playstation I haven't bought. I just have so many games on 360 and Wii I haven't played yet either... not enough hours in a day for me haha.
You know gaming companies are doing something right in their marketing when they can get people to buy the same gaming machine that just looks a little different. I admit, I had to pony up for a newer model Xbox360 but the HDMI was necessary since I had a release model. To each his own, but I'll never understand anyone paying that much money for the latest model when they already own one.
Straight from IGN, who got the info directly from Sony. 2:20 mark.
It actually is different. The internals are redesigned and shrunken down, reducing power consumption and average temperature load. Thanks. I watched at 2:20. You misheard them. They aren't talking about the fan noise, they're talking about the sound of the Blu-Ray drive relative to the slim's. That doesn't mean the slimmer is louder than the slim. It means the sound of the Blu-Ray drive spinning up MIGHT be slightly more noticeable than the slim's. Given that I've never heard my PS3's Blu-Ray drive spin up, I don't think this is something to worry about.
Cool. I probably did mishear them. Just helping anyone considering one to make a better informed decision. I would wait for some actual reviews though, you never know.
Download like hell from the PS Store. Though in Sony's defense here, HDDs are so shockingly cheap these days that it would be wrong NOT to include those capacities.
Check out Craigslist. I picked a 160GB, with 3 Sony Dualshock controllers + MW3 and Uncharted 3 for $200. I wasn't even looking to buy, was just killing time browsing the web. I saw a 120GB for a $150. If you really want one cheap keep an eye on Craigslist, especially If you live in a large metropolian area.
Looks like the slimmer is finally in stock locally. Picking one up tonight, along with Metal Gear Solid HDC. Edit: Get.
Crappy five second pictures with my old PS3, new PS3, and old 3DS tossed in; So far it's totally silent and gives off no heat. I'm pretty damn happy with it. Worth the wait.
20% smaller by volume over the old slim. I left the thing on overnight downloading demos. Still dead silent. Need to give it a marathon gaming test, which won't be happening soon since I still have Borderlands 2 on the PC.
The hardware is great. The controller is much lighter than the original, the console itself is quiet, and I won't miss backwards compatibility because I have a monster PC that can run PCSX2. My only real complaints are with the XMB. Three years after introducing background downloading, I still have to specifically tell the PS3 to do that? And I have to actually install demos one at a time—they don't auto-install in the background? The installation still takes up the whole screen—I can't do anything else, like playing a game, while waiting for the installation to complete? Well, at least the games are good. Going to finally play stuff like Valkyria Chronicles and Uncharted 3. My AC3 preorder is ready to go. And I'm even going to pick up Zone of the Enders HDC.
There's really nothing in the LE that appeals to me. I'm just picking up the normal version. You know, after I finish my AC3 marathon. It's bad for Konami that they scheduled ZoEHDC to come out on the same day as AC3. It's like they're intentionally trying to sabotage the possibility of making a ZoE3.
Hard to believe that a PS3 or Xbox360 (with a hard drive) is still well over $199 at this point in the current console generation. I went from the original Playstation, to the Dreamcast, the Xbox and then Xbox360. I keep telling myself that I'll buy a PS3 as soon as it hits $199. I consider it mandatory to get a second controller with any game system, so the price would actually be about $250. Shelf space around the HDTV is tight and we actually use all four HDMI ports (which when we bought the TV I thought would be plenty). I can always get a switch though. If Sony does a sale this holiday season I am probably jumping in, but once we get a couple months into 2013? I will be thinking about the new consoles (launching late 2013 I think) and probably not worry about a PS3.
Microsoft MIGHT launch in 2013. Sony will likely wait until 2014. I wouldn't let $100 stand between you and games you want to play right now.
I wonder if Sony really wants to give Nintendo a two year, and MS a one year, headstart? Console sales (for all three) have been on a steady decline most of this year. They must either lower prices to the mass market range ($149-$199) to boost sales OR bring out new hardware. I'm good either way. Welcome to (my) married life. I could drop $300 on a PS3 ($199 plus controller and a couple used games for the other $100) and the wife would be OK with that since the initial cost was "only" $199. My fault though, as I've told her repeatedly that a PS3 would be well worth it once it hits $199. I set the expectations, I need Sony to live up to them! Honestly, I've got enough quality games to play through the end of this year (and early next) that I hardly NEED to add a PS3 'greatest hits' game list. Too bad I'm not a baseball fan, or just getting it for MLB: The Show would be reason enough. I got the wife enough into videogames that she has played and loved Bioshock and Mass Effect and I think she would enjoy the Uncharted games. I have waited this long, I can a few more months and with the Holiday season ready to get into full swing? I think I may find a PS3 sale/deal too good to pass up.
Sales are declining due to a. the iPhone and iPad, b. the economy, c. a saturated market, and d. hardware stagnation. I agree with you that it's time for the next generation, and I even believe this crop of consoles is holding back gaming. But at the same time, Microsoft and Sony lost so much money on this generation of hardware that they're trying to wring every last dollar out of the market by keeping the current consoles and releasing every last game they can. I don't think they're worried about Nintendo because neither company views Nintendo as direct competition. They're fighting each other. I think the only way you're going to find a PS3 at the price point you want is eBay/Craigslist.
