Q&A: Dolphins quarterback Chad Pennington

If you look at the passes, plus 20 passes, we're number nine in the league. So, I think it's a perception versus a reality thing.

This is a good point, especially since Miami doesn't throw that much compared to other teams. People (and yes, sportswriters are people too) who think Pennington is constantly throwing 5-yard passes are mistaken.

To be able to throw the back-shoulder throw on a deep ball, that takes chemistry between a wide receiver and a quarterback. We had three of those, so that's a sign of progress.

What's a back-shoulder throw? And what is this "deep ball" he speaks of?

I don't need to look at no stats. My eyes tell me he can't throw the deep pass. How many of those deep passes were YAC? Cobbs and Brown?

Also, there was an article where Pennington said we were 11 or 12, now it's nine? Then armando with his super duper journalistic skills looked it up and said we're 14th.

And is 20 yards really considered deep? I'm thinking 40 yards. We have two, and I believe both were YAC. I saw Rivers who has a weak arm complete two just against New England. And complete one against us and almost another but overthrew it.

thats when bess streaks down the feild....he is covered man 2 man....the corner has his back to the quaterback and penny throws it behind the reciever.....so the WR stops catches and makes a move on the over-running corner.....it looks like its under thrown....but its actually an extremly acurate and great pass :up:

Good point. As a QB, he's tied for 11th. As a team, we're 14th, which is still above average given that we throw less than average.

How many are YAC? I don't know. But I doubt we're getting more YAC than other teams.

You're right, the two over 40 are the flea-flicker to Cobbs and the 80-yard screen to Cobbs.

I don't know if there is an accepted definition for deep. Passes that go over 20 yards are less than 20% of the total for all but a few quarterbacks, though.
