Heck CK, I think we can just raid their roster at the draft of the seniors and one RB that I hope comes out..We could get one of ( if not ) The best QB's in the draft in Cato, same for RB Devon Johnson ( hoping he declares ) , DT James Rouse, and there is a couple of LB's on their team that might be good fits for us and a few OL & DB'S to look at. LOL

    Devon Johnson isn't leaving.

I like James Rouse. He's one helluva guy too. If he's not in the weight room, meeting room, or on the field, or hitting the books (I think he has 2 degrees, maybe 3 or he's working on his 3rd something absurd), he's doing community work. The guy is a monster. With that said, I'm not sure if he sticks in the NFL. He's just such a tweener.

I like Neville Hewitt too. I think he projects as the most likely of our LB (he plays that Joker/Jack role in our defensive scheme...moved from S to LB back to S back to LB) to catch on with a team. But again, I think he's a bit of a tweener (in terms of body size).

The guy I like and think has a chance is Darryl Roberts our DB. He's been suberb this year. It will be interesting to see what he runs at the combine, if he is invited. I imagine he will be, but if he can put up a solid time, I think his tape will really make him a bit of a riser. I'm also hoping he can catch on to one of these postseason All-Star games.

Other than that, Holmes and some other Seniors just don't cut it, IMO.

Chris is a much better evaluator than I am. I want pretend to be. However, Cato and Rouse are top notch people. Roberts & Hewitt have some warts, but are still solid fellas.

Man, that is very disappointing that Johnson is not coming out. Thank you for all of the updates and information on the rest of the best there. :)

James Rouse has a little bit of a tweener look but the bottom line is he plays really well and shows a great combination of power and speed. He's got NFL tangibles, plus all those intangibles. And the great thing about guys like Rouse, Roberts and Hewitt is when you get to crunch time when you need plays, they're the ones making plays. They're the seniors stepping up.

Aside from Cato the best pure prospect is likely Roberts but Rouse is right behind him and then Jasperse and Frohnapfel I think.

Pretty sure it's official that Rakeem Cato has been frozen out of both the Senior Bowl and Shrine Game rosters.

Didn't realize Mike Holmgren and Mike Martz were coaching the NFLPA game. That's pretty slick.

I think Rakeem Cato is going to that one but I'm not positive.

Reached 46 consecutive games with a TD pass which obliterated the previous FBS record of 38 held by Russell Wilson. It tied Mike Reilly's Division II record for all college football divisions.

Career red zone statistics: 80 Pass TD, 5 INT

I hope we draft either him or Doughty.. preferably Cato because I dont know Doughty's personality, though it could change if I learn more about him. I know Cato will not accept just being on a roster and will do his best to make his landing spot a quarterback competition which is what we need.

Being honest, from what I've heard and seen, there could still be maturity issues with Cato. But I think they're the sort that will straighten out rather quickly in a professional environment. And also, none of it has anything to do with his work ethic.

It sounds like the same stuff that has always been the case with him...being too intense, too demanding, too confident, standards too high.

But I think Doughty and Cato are probably the best two senior QB prospects in this draft. So it's good that you bring up Doughty (as I did inside the Club Level). I think they're probably the best.

Thanks for posting those clips throughout the season CK. Been a pleasure having your insight and all of his throws right there.

With Miami's inability to score TD's in the red zone this season it sure would be a nice to have a QB with a killer instinct like Cato.

I just really want to sit down with some of the people that don't like him and ask them. What doesn't he do?

I mean if I feel like anything they can say (aside from "he's small") I can bring up 10 clips showing him doing something compelling at the NFL level in that category.

    1. You want to see him making plays happen out of nothing? There is NO SHORTAGE of that. He does it at least three or four times a week.

    2. You want to see him forced to reset his feet and make a throw? I can show you a dozen of those.

    3. You want to see him throw while rolling left? Easy. How about 7 of them?

    4. Want to see him drop back and throw in rhythm? Sure. Have a couple hundred of those.

    5. Want to see him scanning through to 3rd or 4th reads? Will two dozen clear examples suit you or do you need more? Because there isn't any shortage of examples of him doing that, so long as you have enough powers of perception to see him progressing through his reads.

    6. Need to see the deep vertical? Well, he's the FBS leader in 1st down completions of 25+ yards so obviously no shortage of clips there.

    7. Want to see him be accurate? Can't be one of the best in football converting on 3rd down (48%) without being accurate.

    8. Want to see him cut so bad he breaks ankles? I've got that. Will half a dozen clips do you for that, or should I dig up more?

    9. Want to see him outrun people? I've got that too.

    10. Want to see him avoid unnecessary contact? Got PLENTY of that. Not counting sacks he's run the football about 73 times this year and I'd say about 3/4ths of them he displays either his unwillingness to take unnecessary contact, or his ability to straight up avoid that contact (because in case you didn't notice, he's agile as ****).

    11. Want to see him display unusually good sense for pressure and ability to handle it? No shortage of that. Can probably scare up two dozen of those clips without even trying hard.

    12. Need to see 25 yard throws (as the crow flies), 30 yard throws, 35 yard throws, 40 yard ROPE throws (unusual at the college level and only slightly more common at the NFL level)? Hash mark to opposite sideline? Sure let me scare you up about 50 of those.

    13. Need to see him manipulating defenses, showing unusual sense for and manipulation of passing lanes, and otherwise showing that he processes information at just a different speed than other people? Yeah. I think we can show you two dozen of those plays.

    14. Need to see him in clutch situations? Sure. I've probably got about four or five games from 2013 to 2014 I can show you.

So what is it? What do people need to see that his tape doesn't show them? I guess that's what I don't understand.

    Here's an interesting statistic.

Number of 25+ yard pass completions. The following rankings:

    1. Rakeem Cato - 49
    2. Brandon Doughty - 46
    3. Marcus Mariota - 43
    4. Garrett Grayson - 39

I wonder how telling that statistic is generally because the two top senior QBs and one of the two top junior QBs is in that top four.

Last year, it went like this:

    1. Bryce Petty - 50
    2. David Fales - 45
    2. Johnny Manziel - 45
    4. Tajh Boyd - 43
    5. Derek Carr - 42
    6. Marcus Mariota - 41
    7. Zach Mettenberger - 40
    8. Sean Mannion - 39
    8. Keith Wenning - 39
    8. Teddy Bridgewater - 39

The year before, Derek Carr, Aaron Murray, Johnny Manziel, Geno Smith, Mike Glennon and Teddy Bridgewater were in the top 12 in that statistic.

Before that Case Keenum, Brandon Weeden, RG3, Geno Smith, Landry Jones, Brock Osweiler and Nick Foles were in the top 10. Tannehill, Luck and Barkley were tied at 16th. We're talking out of 98 quarterbacks though.

Really having a tough time finding any QBs that panned out after finishing their college career with bad to mediocre standing in this category.

For those fans of Rakeem Cato he will be participating in the NFLPA Collegiate Bowl on January 17th, the same day as the East-West Shrine Game.

Practices for the NFLPA game will be broadcast on ESPNU on January 14th and 15th. The game itself will be on ESPN2.

The coaches of the NFLPA game this year are Mike Martz and Mike Holmgren. That's pretty cool if you ask me. Holmgren could have potentially gotten a head coach job in the NFL this off season if he'd wanted one. I believe there are teams that wanted to talk to him about it.

Both are quarterback guys too so I'm anxious to see what they have to say. The other QBs at the game will be Cole Stoudt (Clemson), Jerry Lovelocke (Prairie View A&M), Andrew Hendrix (Miami-Ohio), Jameil Showers (UTEP) and Brandon Bridge (South Alabama).

I think most eyes will be on Brandon Bridge because of his pure physical skillset. But I expect Rakeem Cato to outperform him.

    He's baaaaaaack.

Mel Kiper a few days ago came out with his position rankings and ranked Rakeem Cato the #8 quarterback in the Draft.

    1. Jameis Winston, Florida State
    2. Marcus Mariota, Oregon
    3. Brett Hundley, UCLA
    4. Bryce Petty, Baylor
    5. Garrett Grayson, Colorado State
    6. Sean Mannion, Oregon State
    7. Bryan Bennett, Southeastern Louisiana
    8. Rakeem Cato, Marshall
    9. Mark Myers, John Carroll
    10. Grant Hedrick, Boise State

Interesting rankings overall though. If you are not familiar with how Mel Kiper works, he's generally got his ear to the ground with the teams and scouts and he will manipulate his rankings according to what he's hearing. He's probably more that way than any other draft analyst.

This was quite the surprise considering Cato has gotten ZERO love in the post-season. No Shrine invite. No Senior Bowl invite. Went to the NFLPA game and did alright during the week of practices. The Combine invited Jerry Lovelocke to the Combine from the NFLPA game instead of Cato. They invited Anthony Boone from the Shrine Game which makes zero sense. They invited Nick Marshall as an actual throwing quarterback.

I think it's interesting he ranked Bryan Bennett, Mark Myers and Grant Hedrick so high as well.

It is theoretically possible that Bennett is the 3rd best QB in this draft, considering when he was at Oregon he was stuck behind one of the top 2 QBs in the draft. I like his athleticism, but he is not really an accurate enough passer for the next level currently.

Also agree on Kiper. I've noticed that about him for years and been reading his stuff for over 25 years. But it is one thing that makes his rankings worth paying attention to. They are like a composite of all his inside contacts' rankings.

Kiper had him in his Top 10 quarterbacks recently, I think #8 among them, but then dropped him back out in favor of some new names that are creating some buzz. I think Carden was one, another was a small school guy I think.

I would bet on undrafted. Ultimately, 5'11" & 171 lbs is going to throw off a lot of folks for good reason.

Can't do anything about the height but if I were his agent I would have been on him to eat as much as he can and avoid weighing in at NFLPA practice as low as he did at 171 lbs. He's been up to 193 lbs in the past. That's more toward where he needed to show up.

Completely agree. I suppose he believes that door isn't closed yet, and that he will try to walk onto a practice squad first.

Considering his Miami ties, one might assume the Dolphins are the most feasible landing spot. And if Freeman is Freeman, and we don't draft Halliday (or Halliday is Halliday), Cato actually has a shot.

However, having a shot and having a future are quite different. He's probably a success story in the CFL or Arena league, and, after he gets cut in a NFL training camp, hopefully he figures that out.

    Or just sulk.

It's sad to see, but honestly I think his upbringing is swallowing him up.

He doesn't trust anyone. He thinks his immense accomplishments (and they are immense) should be good enough. Now that he's confronted with the reality that they're not, he's turning inward.

It's a shame. He should at least get a camp invite somewhere... he is someone that could maybe benefit from the conditioning of being in the CFL for a year or 2 and then make the transition to the NFL. It's obviously not as common for QBs these days, but I mean damn, that arm.

Please take a chance on him Miami.

He turned down a CFL workout, which usually happens, if he lands no where for a yr or two, he'll take the plunge or maybe go into the nfl development league if it ever gets off of the ground

Sorry that it didn't seem to work out for him. He destroyed me for years in NCAA Football in the Friends of Coal Bowl (I played as WVU). Just a video game, but it was also a great way to get a jump and find out who the good college football players were going to be in coming seasons.

Just to update on this, Rakeem Cato has been invited to tryout at Cleveland Browns mini camp.

I just hope he puts his best foot forward, does everything he can to learn what he needs to learn, weigh in whatever weight they want him to weigh in, and not be so discouraged he just stops trying. That seems to me like a very real possibility right now.

Cleveland's three QBs at rookie camp this weekend are Connor Shaw, Justin Worley and Rakeem Cato.

Tough mountain to climb if Cato has to beat out Shaw. He was hands down better than Johnny Manziel last year and you could certainly make the case that he needs to be their #1 quarterback.

But I don't think he should need to outperform Shaw. They also have an ancient Josh McCown on roster as well as Thaddeus Lewis. I'd say Lewis is the guy Cato needs to aim to be more intriguing than.

The Browns evidently only SIGNED four UDFAs. However they have 50 players there on tryout. That's an interesting approach.

Signed by the Montreal Alouettes on a two-year deal for about $100,000 with incentives. A third year option built in, could be executed by the team.

Should be a good opportunity for him. The other QBs on roster are Jonathan Crompton, Dan LeFevour, Tanner Marsh and John Skelton.

Not exactly a stellar crew, even by CFL standards. Here are their 2014 statistics:

    Jonathan Crompton: 179 of 308 for 2,482 yards, 11 TD, 8 INT, 28 runs for 154 yards & 0 TD
    Dan LeFevour: 101 of 149 for 1,276 yards, 4 TD, 4 INT, 50 runs for 314 yards & 4 TD
John Skelton: None (no career stats either)
    Tanne Marsh: 6 of 14 for 52 yards, 1 TD, 0 INT, 48 runs for 160 yards & 7 TD

Some names you might recognize playing on the Alouettes:

    WR Chad Johnson
    WR Brandon London
    WR Cody Hoffman
    WR/KR Mardy Gilyard
    WR/KR James Rodgers
    RB Chris Rainey
    OL Philip Blake
    LB Winston Venable

They drafted QB Brandon Bridge but it's unclear whether he'll play with them or not. He is a Canadian born player though.

Cato has a real opportunity to step in and fill the shoes of Anthony Calvillo who was Montreal's QB for so many years, a CFL passing legend, and their current WR coach. Great chance for Cato to prove his skill for a good CFL team.

I thought he had a slight misstep in the statement he released when he signed with Montreal.

He said that the NFL is still his ultimate goal but that he is committed to winning multiple championships in Montreal.

CFL people are kind of touchy about the NFL. He should have just left it at he's committed to making it rain with championship trophies in Montreal.

Looks like the Alouettes tossed in Cato for the 4th quarter of their first preseason game. He went 5 for 5 for 72 yards and finished with a TD pass to Jonathan Bryant.

Most of the attention is on Jonathan Crompton who is assumed to end up the starter, and Brandon Bridge who was the big draft pick. Bridge did well for himself, 4 of 8 for 52 yards with a TD. Crompton was only 2 of 6 for 17 yards.

But basically Rakeem Cato was the best QB in the game for the Als so it will be interesting what they do in the next preseason game. I doubt he leapfrogs over Bridge but they could be looking at keeping him around if he has another great performance.

I think the Als will probably hide him on the IR or some kind of list for 2015, Crompton was efficient but rather unspectacular last year, he kind of saved MTL season after Troy Smith trainwrecked his way into a disastrous start. The Alouettes don't actually have anybody interesting for the future at the QB position and i'm extremely intrigued by Cato...

It's amazing to me that they regard Jonathan Crompton highly. I don't think that's going to work out so well for them. I'm not saying Rakeem Cato should start as a rookie, but I do think he's the best quarterback they have in that camp and I'm including Brandon Bridge in that.

I just hope they don't fall into the trap of evaluating his size instead of his performance. Going 5 for 5 for 72 yards with a TD in the preseason game was hardly a coincidence. He's a very skilled player.

Cato officially made the team as the Als kept 4 QBs along with Crompton, Bridge and Dan Lefevour. We'll look at the start of the season thursday, Crompton and Lefevour are listed as 1st and 2nd QB for now but both played poorly in preseason games...
