I just bought a nice 52" HDTV, and now want a Blu Ray and DVD player. I figurued I might as well get the PS3. I mean, why not? I can play games that really entice me while benefiting from the BR and DVD player. My questions are; 1. Do I really need the 80GB vers? What do you possibly store on the PS3? 2. Can I sit the PS3 on its side? Every pic I see the PS3 is upright. Wont fit my entertainment system as I hoped if I have to stand it up.
1. No, especially if you are going to mainly use it as a Blu-Ray player. Storage wise its just game data and demos, or you can download movies from PSN. 2. Absolutely, Mine has been sitting flat since day 1.
Honestly, mine has collected dust since I got it. I played the hell out of it when MGS came out... Not it's kinda just sitting there playing an occasional Blu-ray whenever I get a new one.
well... When MGS came out, i played the thing non-stop till i beat it. But since then it's been Stargate, Terminator 2, No Country for Old Men, and Predator.
I played MGS a ton too, then NCAA, and then got back into Warhawk for awhile. But I haven't played much lately since becoming a dad.
In order to find a PS3 with less than 80gb you are going to have to go to Ebay. But the 80gb regular edition is now 399.99 so you might as well get that version.
Do you want backwards compatiblity? Then you want the 80GB version with MGS4. If not, then grab anything else really. I have all 3, and play in order PS3, 360 and Wii. Although that may be misleading because I haven't turned on the Wii in months.
Thanks guys. I did some research, and apparently, the PS3 Blu Ray video quality is great, comparable with stand alone Blu Ray players. Any of you have a different opinion?
No complaints here. The unique thing about the PS3 as a Blu-Ray player is that they can update the firmware/software constantly so its always up to date because of that alot of places on the web rate it as one of the best BR players on the market.
it's a damn good BR player... My main complaint is that I hate using a gamepad to control movies. Since it's all Blue-tooth, you can't use your universal remote. I have a pretty pimp universal remote that control EVERYTHING (including the 360) except the damn PS3. *sigh*
I have a harmony one, and got a little $10 dongle that let's me control everything on the ps3, except turning it on. No complaints here.
I actually use one of these right now because it makes everything on the PS3 (besides games) easier....

Like I said, it can't turn on the ps3, but if you have to put a movie in, it really doesn't matter.
The PS3 is generally considered the best Blu-Ray player available. It's cheaper than a lot of the competition and has equal if not better video quality. It's also top notch at upscaling regular DVDs. You really cannot go wrong with the system at this point.
Thanks guys. I ended up picking up the PS3 and am quite happy with it. Watched my first blu ray movie, Top Gun, and it looked incredible!!!
Get yourself a good HDMI cable you'll see a difference. It does a great job upconverting regualar DVDs as well. Enjoy!
Honestly, HDMI is a digital signal... Bigger ones and fancier ones aren't gonna create a better picture than lower cost ones. HDMI Cable, Home Theater Accessories, HDMI Products, Cables, Adapters, Video/Audio Switch, Networking, USB, Firewire, Printer Toner, and more! Best prices on cables on the internet. I'm actually kinda upset that you bought the PS3 branded HDMI cables.
Not sure of the transfer rate of the ps3 recommended one I had purchased one off the shelf seperate of the machine and I ended up with speckles.
yeah man, there has to be something wrong with that cable. We have the PS3 going into a 42" 1080p TV using a $6 HDMI cable. It looks phenomenal.
I didn't see it much when the screen is busy but in any dark or near black scenes I was picking up faint speckles.
I'm with Mor, I have all my cable from monoprice with no complaints. And I feel bad you paid so much for the ps3 cable.
Sorry for upsetting the Mor by buying the PS3 cable. Glad you brought up 1080p. Does it really matter man? I mean, I've been doing some reading, and Madden and NHL 09 are only available in 720p. X Box upscales, but from what I've read, PS3 doesnt. I've also read the native 720p is better than the X Box's upschaled 1080i. I'm soooooo confused.... PS. Why the hell would EA release something in 720p and advertise "HD Gaming" in their load ups?? I hate EA, and love em at the same time.
Phin-o-rama's the king of audio/video, but I'll try It's not that the PS3 can't do 1080p, it's that developers lately aren't taking advantage of it. We don't know if it's due to difficulty or laziness (that subject is up in the air - depending on who you talk to). As far as movies are concerned, I only watch Blu-rays on the PS3. Not sure what it does or handles DVDs. The 360 handles DVDs very well. And it handles AVI's amazingly (which is what I mostly watch).
Thanks, but coming from a guy with both the 360 and the PS3, what is better? 1. 360 upscaling 720p to 1080i or 2. PS3 in native 720p If you had to pick a console on graphics alone, what would it be?
Unless it's a Blu-Ray, I use the 360 for everything. Probably mostly because of ease-of-use. I've never really compared graphics for movies because I don't think I've watch anything but Blu-rays (in 1080p) on the PS3. As far as games, I never did a side-by-side before. Besides all of my 360 games being donations from Microsoft for me being a member of the press, on average (this is a complete guesstimation) 9 of 10 cross platform games are reviewed better on the 360. Again, never actually compared myself... And that doesn't actually mean they look better either... This is alot of brain work.
I just bought a PS3. I was looking for a blu-ray player... but I thought what the heck I can't wait to see what my little girl's imagination can do with Little Big Planet. But for me I'll be sticking with my 360 downstairs.
IMO, the PS3 looks much better than my 360. But that's because I was a loyal consumer and bought an original Xbox360. The kind that don't have HDMI connectivity. Microsoft rewarded my loyalty by making a completely new one that does have HDMI and expecting me to shell out another 3 - 400 for that. Microsoft can kiss my ***.
