As we approach the half way point of the NFL season, there are nine legit contenders (some more so than others) for the #1 pick in the 2012 NFL draft. Here's a look at their records and remaining schedules.
At this point, one would think our Dolphins and Indy would be favored but, the game does take many unexpected turns.
Miami (0-6)- @ Giants, @ KC, Wash, Buff, @ Dallas, Oakland, Philly, @ Buff, @ NE, Jets
Indy (0-7)- @ Tenn, Atl, Jags, Carolina, @ NE, @ Balt, Tenn, Houston, @ Jags
St Louis (0-6)- NO, @ Zona, Cleve, Seattle, Zona, @ SF, @ Seattle, Cinci, @ Pitt, SF
Arizona- (1-5)- @ Balt, St L, @ Philly, @ SF, @ St L, Dallas, SF, Cleve, A Cinci, Seattle
Minny- (1-6)- Carolina, @ GB, Oak, @ Atlanta, Denver, @ Detroit, NO, @ Wash, Chi
Jags- (1-5)- Balt (MNF), @ Houst, @ Indy, @ Cleve, Houst, SD, TB, @ Atl, @ Tenn, Indy
Denver- (2-4)- Det, @ Oak, @ KC, Jets, @ SD, @ Minny, Chi, NE, @ Buff, KC
Seattle- (2-4)- Cinci, @ Dallas, Balt, @ St L, Wash, Philly, St L, @ Chi, SF, @ Zona
Carolina (2-5)- Minny, Tenn, @ Det, @ Indy, @ TB, Atl, @ Houst, TB, @ NO
Philly is 2-4 but not a contender.

Still a long ways to go.
-
Opponents on INDY and STL still seem like a Win for each is possible...if not 2 but at least 1. -
There's only 3 teams in Contention IMO. Seattle, St. LOUIS and Miami. Peyton is probably coming back. And till I hear that he's not, I don't think they legit Co.te.sets. Lucky for us Seattle and St. Louis play in the kindergarten of football.
-
there wont be a winless team this year, if its not us... St. Louis has had a brutal schedule starting the season, but they get to play in division which will get them a win or 3... i say same with Seattle and Arizona, with those 3 teams playing a round robin, they all will win something... im not worried about the NFC Westerners...
Indy and Jaguars are almost the same to me as well... and the Jags can also beat teams with a questionable run defense cause MJD can go off at any time, that equals potential wins against Clevelands suspect run defense, and maybe even Tampa
Minny will win some also, Peterson alone will win them a game or 2 in there...
i think we're in a good spot in the Luck sweepstakes... we will not have the SOS tiebreaker, no way with our division when Jets, Bills and Pats will all be over 500 most likely... but with our remaining schedule and Matt Moore under center, are there any winnable games left? i dont think so... -
I think we'll be beat Washington.
-
I hope so Aqua, I really do.....the concept of 0-16 concerns me.

-
Since the Rams have Sam Bradford, would they be interested in a QB?
-
I would be willing to wager that 2 wins are already out of it....1 Win will secure the #1 pick (not including a TEAM willing/able to TRADE UP).
only 6 teams have that chance currently.
We have a 1/6 chance....also think of it this way......we have a top 6 pick in the draft at the moment. And FRANCHISE QBs are deep enough to secure one. -
Of all the teams that could go #1 with young - recently drafted QBs, seems like St Louis has the only one that could prevent them from taking Luck. but it's early. if Minny's QB keeps playing well, they could change their minds, but of course, if he plays well, they take themselves out of the sweepstakes.
-
I don't think teams take themselves out of the race because they have a good QB now. If anything, IMO they trade the pick to someone who is willing to forgo a ton of picks.

As bad as Miami has been St Louis has looked even worse.I don't think Miami loses all their games(they may ,I know) the Rams look like they put up less effort and are not at all into it.

Just remember that Andrew Luck will be the #1 overall pick no matter who "gets" the #1 overall pick.
If the team with the #1 overall pick already has a QB (Rams or Indy), they will trade the pick for a boatload of picks. If we don't have the #1 overall pick, we'll certainly be at #2 or #3 and our picks will be more valuable to whomever is interested in trading the pick. -
Granted the trade up would get us Luck....so....probably a happier feeling.GARDENHEAD likes this. -
I don't believe any of the nine, other than Carolina, would trade Luck. Peyton is old and no one knows how his neck will hold up. All the others are rebuilding. If Luck is as talented as everyone believes, I would rather be rebuilding with him and trying to trade what they now have at QB.

I dont know about WASH. John Beck coming back to Miami, after being part of the 2007 team? He'll probably have a solid game. It would truly be destiny if John Beck beats us in 2011.
-
Al either have qbs drafted in rd 1 or used a 1st rounder to trade for them... Our time
-
If we lose to NYG and KC, go to 0-8 and then lose AT HOME to Washington, then we are going 0-16. It will be destiny at that point, if it isn't already
-
IMO, Miami has two games left of their schedule that they will be competitive in they are Washington and Oakland. Although both those games are in Miami which will give them a huge advantage! lol -
I think this is a three team race between us, Indy and jax. The tough part for us is we will lose the strength of schedule tiebreaker against either so we need to finish one clear. I agree with everyone that says 1-15 will win this thing, if not 0-16. And as much as finishing 1-15 with the first pick is probably best case scenario,I would choose 0-16 with luck than 1-15 without him. I don't think the Detroit fans care about being 0-16 four years ago if stafford nets them a super bowl, and by all accounts luck is a much better prospect than stafford. We really need the colts to beat tenn this week, I wish that game was in Indy.
I don't see the rams as viable contenders as bad as they looked yesterday. They have 7 "winnable games" left. Same goes for Arizona, they are bad but their schedule is too soft to not win at least one more.
It's us, Indy or jax. Give me even odds on that and I will bet the mortgage. -

Final score: Washington 23, Miami 12 -
You better hope Colombo stays because if they fix that right side and try some new things like say Cook at RG and Garner at RT we're going to win football games.
-
Colts might have a dilemma too. I mean, this team is BAD. Even with Manning they would not be super bowl material.
I wonder if they'd trade it and take Jones or Barkley or whoever, then use their extra picks to boost the rest of the team. They have a chance to win another Super Bowl with manning if they do that. And still have a possibly great QB, just not Luck. -
They might trade Manning to the Jets or the Ravens and just draft Luck. Not that crazy of a possibility. Once Lewis and Reed retire those Ravens will go south quite a bit.
-
Would be funny if 3 teams ended up 0-16.
-
Bad teams like us, the colts, jags, etc will only stand a chance against two types of teams - low scoring or mistake prone. To win a game we will essentially need to catch several breaks because we will be the underdog. If we can catch Washington in a game where Rex or Beck cough it up a few times, or the Giants when Eli has one of his brain fart games we could pull something out. -
Those would be some of my first calls.Trowa likes this. -
This site updates the SOS in season every so often: http://www.rogerspoll.com/nfl_2011_sos_wk6.html
Last update was week 6 ... not sure how he tabulates the score ... but as of week 6, we had the 4th toughest schedule to date ... which doesn't bode well for our draft tie breaker as the team with the weaker SOS gets the higher pick -
