With all the jockeying for salary cap dollars, what about RT and Suh? I thought I heard Suh's deal couldn't be re-done, that it was already done, in the sense that more money was backloaded. However, wasn't the advantage of Tannehill's deal was that it was backloaded and this was the offseason, they would restructure? His cap hit is $20M.

Suh has four years left on his deal, and his cap numbers are as follows:
2017: 19.1m
2018: 26.1m
2019: 28.1m
2020: 22.375m
There is no real reason or logic to rework his deal now, as it would only make the next two years even bigger, by shoving money into the future. He also cannot be cut the next two seasons with a huge dead money hit. Should the team decide to, then his contract could be looked at in 2019, as either part of an extension, or perhaps to let him go to save money.
Tannehill is also signed for four more seasons. His deal is a bit different though, in that he makes right around 20m in each of those seasons. It possible that the team could choose to rework his deal after this coming season if he has a great year, but right now, with not much guaranteed money and a cap number thats very workable for a starting QB, I doubt that the team gives up their flexibility without a good reason. -
Currently, RT's average salary is 14th highest for QB's. Tony Romo, Tyrod Taylor, Jay Cutler, and Kaepernick make a lot more money than he does. Tannehill has an incredibly team-friendly contract. Why would you re-structure his contract?

As far as Suh goes, I don't expect the team to cut him after the 2018 season. As Finster said, its still a huge dead money hit. Its just actually impossible until that point to even think about it.
I actually don't expect any players to be restuctured, honestly. Pouncey and Maxwell could both be cut after next season with little to no dead money, and they are the only two other players on the team signed beyond 2018 who aren't on rookie contracts.danmarino likes this. -

A qb can be paid $1m this year and $39m next year. Average is $20m.dolphin25 likes this. -

We are stuck with suh. Get used to it and hope for the best.
Tannehills contract is fine, hes on average with all the other starting quarterbacks.Unlucky 13 likes this. -
He's going to be tied with Aaron Rodgers for 6th highest paid qb next year
The only statistic he'll be tied with Aaron Rodgersdolphin25 likes this. -

He's a slightly above average QB (with hopefully the ability to get better) getting average QB pay.Fin D likes this. -
Congrats on "seeing" the website. Hopefully the numbers weren't too difficult for you to understand. hahaFin D likes this. -
If you don't understand how NFL contracts work I'd be happy to explain it to you.
Just ask.
Nicely.

At this point, there's really no need to re-structure either IMO.
Suh... you just can't. There just isn't a lot you can do with it.
As for Tannehill... while his play might not be at his dollar value, you really can't be concerned with that at this point. The deal itself is very reasonable for a capable QB you can win with in this league. You have two choices really in the NFL IMO... you're either fortunate enough to nail a QB pick in the draft that gives you the value of that rookie contract for a few years, or you're paying through the nose for someone that has experience and can play. Sure, there's a third option, but that's got you in the same situation as the Cleveland Browns the last few years, so who really wants that?
The hit's on Tannehill's contract right now really aren't a major issue IMO. Unfortunately these deals keep increasing and you can't stop that. That's the situation you're faced with when your QB hits his second deal if you plan on keeping him. If you plan on just drafting another QB every time that rookie deal ends, then, I'd say stop playing Madden and let's talk about the real world here. I can however understand the thought of draft another QB because this one isn't good enough. I don't necessarily agree with it, but I can understand it. However, no guarantee your draftee plays as well, and I really just don't think our team has the luxury right now of cutting the cord on Tannehill to spend a early pick on a QB, especially in a draft without top QB prospects.
That being said, at this point, the numbers are what they are. It's the cost of doing business with QB's in the NFL. Outside of those on rookie deals, you've either got one or you don't, and if you have one, you're paying for him.
The talk of comparing his total contract value, or average salary, or whatever else you want to look at in comparison to other players, is just nonsense IMO. The total value varies a lot on when it was signed, and the average fluctuates on the number of years the deal was for. At the end of the day ,these' kinds of numbers are what you're going to pay for 2nd and 3rd contract starting caliber QB's. That's never going to change, and we aren't in the luxury IMO of drafting one that can make an impact, and I'm not even sure there's one in this class. So, you pay. Just let RT's deal be for the time being until we need to do something drastic like that.
If you think Tannehill's deal is bad, I'd say wait until you see the deal Kirk Cousins get's somewhere. Look at what Osweiler got. Numbers like this for QB's are just the cost of doing business in the NFL QB market.Last edited: Feb 21, 2017danmarino and LI phinfan like this. -
Gotta make cap room for Revis Island.

Restructures sound great because of the upfront relief, but it's not like you're getting away with anything. You're just kicking the can down the road and piling on the cap hit later in the deal.Unlucky 13 and danmarino like this.
