Looks like Brian Giles from the Padres could be a Red Sox. The Red Sox have 48 hours to get a deal done. http://sandiego.padres.mlb.com/news...ent_id=3268154&vkey=news_sd&fext=.jsp&c_id=sd
Brian Giles has blocked the deal and will remain with the Padres. His concerns were with Playing time and location.
Yeah, those 1 and a half months in Boston playing in a playoff race is a real killer (especially since he could have worked out a deal where Boston would decline his option for next year while still getting paid the $2 million for the buy out and he could return to SD as a FA). Whatever, I'm glad he's not here. It shows that he's probably just a soft player and wouldn't have handled the pressure here well.
Yikes you sound alittle upset. Well I think it might have to do with playing time. He would not have started if everyone is healthy. Oh well
His on base percentage is at .405 I just hope we don't bring him back for the re-building phase of baseball in San Diego at 9 million.
Haha, yeah I just reread what I posted and it did sound angry. I just think its dumb that he wouldn't want to be involved in the playoff race for a month and a half (he's not the only one Delgado and Griffey are others that come to mind). To me it just shows me that Giles isn't someone who I'd want on my team because I'm not sure he could handle the pressure. And it's not like the guy doesn't want to up root his family because he still has years on the contract. He could become a FA at the end of the year and then go back to SD. I don't see what the big deal is but again it's probably for the best.
Good win last night, Dice-K with another solid outing. He really had it going for while, then he started walking folks again. 13-2 with a 2.90 era, I can't agrue with the production we have got from him this year. He isn't really dominate, but he has been pretty effective.
Wakefield is apparentlu headed to the DL. He felt tightness in the back of his shoulder (same injury he had last year that caused him to miss the 2007 WS). No word on who will replace him. They have Masterson up already so maybe him? They could also have a spot start with Michael Bowden who's suppose to pitch tomorrow in Triple A. Devern Hansack (already on the 40 man roster) could make the start too. Charlie Zink and David Pauley are other options but they pitched Friday and Saturday.
Zink has been killing it in the minors this year, glad he gets his shot. Basically for Zink he can only be called up when either Wakefield or Varitek is hurt. The Sox told his agent since Varitek catches 4 out of 5 games, only sitting when Wakefield pitches, its a tough road to the majors.
Sox picked up Paul Byrd for PTBN or cash. I like the move, Byrd isn't a sexy pitcher but he pitched well last year in the playoffs vs the Yanks and Sox and with Wake out and Buchholz sucking it was a good low risk move. I'm just surprised he cleared waivers or that a team didn't put a claim on him before he got to the Sox.
I think I need a drink after tonight's game. In what could have been the worst loss this season (and maybe since 2006 5 game beaten by the Yankees) turned out to be a very positive night with the bats coming alive late in the game to win. Bad news though is the pen is still a mess and Lowell seems to be hurting big time. EDIT: If I were Theo this off season instead of using the money they freed up by trading Manny by signing FAs, I'd use it to sign Lester, Papelbon, Youkilis and Pedroia to long term deals.
Byrd is a solid pickup IMO and I can't believe I missed tonights game. I would have likely of turned it off after going up 10-0 in the 1st inning but I always check back on the game even if he does get out of hand. Madden consuming all my time today
I liked him when he was with the Angels a couple years ago. Thought they should have kept him around actually. Nice move by the Sox imo. And nice first inning today lol, glad I didnt give up on Ortiz in my fantasy league
just...wow... you bet me that the red sox would win and giving up 17 runs and Mariano would blow his first save of the year today i would of took that bet
I turned it off to go get some food and do some other stuff when it was 12-2. Needless to say when I got home and was watching ESPN while eating my Chipotle I almost chucked my burrito. The Sox are losing 15-14, but when I see its only the 7th I am somewhat relieved by the fact that the Rangers may have to toss Ian Kinsler in the 9th. Youk, has offically reached untouchable status. He has gone from a great hitter that walked alot, to a great hitter with power, that can drive in runs. I agree with Finkle just lock all those guys up Brewers style.
Lester is so good in such a short amount of time. It maybe gives me hope Buchholz can snap out of it.
Word is the Red Sox are going to get the 2012 All Star Game because it will mark Fenway Park being 100 years old.
Your offense loves playing Texas lol. They have a scary lineup, if they ever figure out how to pitch or catch the ball they could be a scary team in the AL West one day.
Texas's pitching is just brutal. Last night they Mendoza, rocking a 7.59 era. They have plenty of young good hitters, but zero pitchers. Anyone can hit in Texas, they should concentrate on getting atleast a few quality arms they can toss out... Ortiz seems to be heating up lately. Glad to see the wrist is feeling better.
It's why I'm not convinced the Hamilton trade is a clear win for them. He's obviously great but they could use Edison Volquez.
Hamilton is a great talent but there's no way I'd touch him if I were a GM, just too much risk involved. I'm glad the guy got his life straighten out though but the fact that he has to travel with someone that's with him 24/7 would scare me.
Terrible two days of baseball. Beckett has had a pretty so so season this year, I wonder how much of it has to do with the injury he had earlier in the year. Anyway I want to take the time to say I'm not sure if anyone saw this today but after Youkilis home run, he stopped in front of the Red Sox on deck circle and shook hands and talked to a kid with special needs for about a minute on his way back to the dugout. I have to tip my cap to Youk, it shows how much class the guy has to do that in the middle of a blow out game. I'm sure it made that kid's day.
Well now is the time for the Red Sox to sweep the O's because the Rays are playing the Angels. Hopefully LAA helps us out this week.
Man Lester is so good right now. Also I saw that Millar cleared waviers. I think the Sox should think about trying to get him. He could serve as good insurance in case Lowell is out longer than expected. Plus he still swings a pretty good stick from the right side and could play corner OF and 1st. And yes he'd be good in the clubhouse.
Lester has been brilliant for us. More then a few times he's had to stop these littlelosing streaks. He's the real ace of our staff this year. If Dice K could be more then a 6 inning pitcher he too would fit that bill.
Yeah it would be nice to see them have a little losing streak. But we need to remember we still have the WC right now, which is better than nothing. But I still want to win the divison.
Yeah them losing would not hurt, But we just need t worry about the Red Sox and everything else will take care of itself.
Beckett is getting his start skipping because he's feeling numbness in his ring and pinky fingers on his right hand. I have no idea what the hell that means injury wise, but I'm a little concerned.
I guess its not a blister, but really numbness in his ring and pinky finger. I thought someone had made that injury up when I saw it.
Don't talk to us right now..... Seriously though I think the Rays have the East won. Everything is just going their way. I know there's still a little less than a month and a half but I just have that feeling.
Why is Bucholz still starting? He has been beaten like a pinata most of the season and right now the worst player on the team. He needs to be sent down ASAP and have someone else start in his place. When he starts the team is almost guranteed a loss and with the Rays losing tonight Boston can't take advantage because of his lousy pitching. Edit: Just heard on ESPN they have finally sent him down to the minors. 'Bout time
Beckett's start is pushed back yet again, now to Friday. Francona says Beckett's elbow is/was bugging him. At this point I won't be shocked if he misses a few starts, maybe even a DL trip, unfortunately I havea gut feeling that I'm going to wake up one morning to see the words 'Beckett' 'Andrews' 'Tommy John' 'back in 2010'. This Byrd pick up is huge right now, I didn't understand it how the Yankees could let him pass waivers without making a claim, if only to block the Red Sox, Angels, White Sox, Twins or Rays from getting him. I mean even if the Yankees got stuck with Byrd and the 2million left on the deal, he's a big upgrade over Ponson, Rasnar, Hughes, Kennedy and Pavano. Oh well. Here's hoping the Beckett thing isn't serious. Wakefield is taking his start Tuesday vs. the Yankees.
7-0 Toronto in the 4th. It just doesn't look like it will be the Red Sox's year. I think it's the LA Angels or Cubbie's year.
Man the Sox are hurting right now. I hope we can make the postseason but, everyday it seems to get a bit dimmer.
