Could Chad Pennington once again
be the answer for Miami's woes, this time
replacing Sparano at Head Coach?
at least 80% of the managers in baseball played in the big leagues
& just about every player was a star at some reasonably high level
some NFL notable players turned head coach:
Don Shula, Tom Landry, Chuck Noll, Bill Cowher, Mike Singletary, Jack Del Rio, Ken Whisenhunt, Jeff Fisher
these are just the one's I can remember and
some were amongst the best the NFL has ever produced
why not consider Chad Pennington for the job?
very few know the game as well as he does
or have the leadership abilities or intelligence
that Pennington possesses & he knows the franchise well
he absolutely couldn't do any worst than Sparano has done, even without coaching credentials
wonder what the legalities of such a mid-season move would be
the many pundits we have on the board will know the possibilities
of such a move.
I pose this as a question, that could be an answer to our woes, not a solution that I know would work, but I like the idea!
if its possible, why not take a chance? this would be a good year to break in a new head coach. we'd know quickly what his potential was & could move on from there... sometimes, you have to think outside the box!

he has no real coaching experience. to say he couldn't be way worse than TS is crazy. He could be 100x worse.
-
-
Ummm talk about super conservative!
Ill pass and Im very low on Sparano. -
While I think Pennington is highly intelligent and was an excellent leader as a player. He has absolutely zero experience as a coach and to expect him to step in and take over a a head coach in the NFL is a bit absurd. Perhaps if he wants to get into coaching, he should start as an assistant and perhaps in a few years he might make a good head coach if he is first successful as a position coach. The Dolphins need an experienced NFL coach to take over for Sparano. Not someone who needs to learn how to be a coach in the NFL, much less a head coach.
-
I think if we make a change at midseason, we should hire Bob Griese as head coach, Nat Moore as OC, and Kim Bokamper as DC. Let's see...Joe Rose could be TE coach, Mark Duper could be the WR coach...John Offerdahl could be lb coach. Hmmm, maybe Trent Green as QB coach...any other suggestions? Hey! We could get Garo Yepremian to be STs coach. :D
-
no, what we should do is the same thing we have been doing with Sparano in charge & prayer for a different result.
-
Shula's hiring was controversial too! He had one season under his belt as an assistant coach & was thought to be too young at age 33 & inexperienced to assume the Head Coach position
however
Don took the controls and led the Colts to an 8–6 record in 1963 & would eventually take the reins of the Miami franchise, leading us to the undefeated season.
Desperation. It drives a fan base mad or to alternative thinking? -

it's just an idea, born of the necessity to maintain an interest in an otherwise defrocked & boring franchise.
I'm just examining possibilities to get the team out of this embarrassing run of NFL bottom feeding.
somewhere out there is a solution & it may appear to be stupid as we post, but it just might work.
please understand:

there's been talk of Daboll or Nolan replacing Sparano
I think it would be better to leave them where they're comfortable
allowing Pennington to replace Sparano. this is not a SuperBowl year
we could afford the Pennington experiment, might be a good thing
at any rate
don't expect any coaching move until we're definitely out of the running
it's only banter & idle speculation, but its a thought. you just never know...
meanwhile 56% of our forum think the season is already a wash
I'm hardly alone in my quest for possible answers to right the ship -
Penny is going to have to have at least one year with some kind of assistant coaching job before he would even be considered for the top position. I think he's got the tools but you have to have some experience. At least a little bit.

Friend muscle979:
I believe a QB that has run the team in the mode of a Peyton Manning or Chad Pennington has actually coached a team.
No one can deny the importance of Pennington's constant in-put in game planning with the coaching staff or his coaching on the field in both game & practice. No one can deny his football knowledge, leadership or intelligence. He was a coach & a successful one. I view both Manning & Pennington as experienced player-coaches & believe either has the potential to step up to a head coach position, given the assistants are competent & experienced.
Shula had one season under his belt as an assistant coach & was thought to be too young & inexperienced at age 33 to assume the Head coach position, however, Don took the controls and led the Colts to an 8–6 record in 1963 & would eventually take the reins of the Miami franchise, leading us to the undefeated season.
just something to think about ... -
But there's a lot to be considered when comparing a Shula with Chad Pennington outside of age and a feel for the game. One of those would be their make-up. Shula succeeded in large part because he was a steely-jawed taskmaster, a no-nonsense type of guy that demanded and received his player's respect. Does Chad have the ability to crack the whip and instill discipline? Perhaps. But you would like to see it first in some type of assistant position. -
I'm the biggest Chad Pennington lover on the board possibly. He's my favorite alumni of my favorite CFB team, Marshall. Him coming to Miami and leading the team to the season it had in 2008 only grew his legend and my man-love for the guy.
However, having him come in immediately and be a HC would be an extremely dramatic and naive move made by the team. It would have been almost as poor as allowing Dan Marino to be the VP of Football Operations (wasn't he supposed to have Parcells' title? I could be wrong).
With no experience in coaching, managing other coaches, etc. it would be a very short-sighted move.
Chad Pennington had an MVP year, but that team was turned around by a wonderful scheme (WildCat) & a having some closers--Chad Pennington & Joey Porter on the football team.
The season can be saved if we win in Cleveland. A strong run game, win the turnover battle, and limit mistakes/negative plays.MrClean likes this. -
I have already posted I think Tony will have to lose the season before he's replaced.
having said that
meanwhile 56% of our forum think the season is already a wash
I'm hardly alone in my quest for possible answers to right the ship
if the team falls out of the running:
the real question may be:
what have we got to lose?
in that scenario, Chad Pennington looks good to me
p.s. if a bullfrog had wings, he wouldn't bump his azz
& if Sparano had the ability to coach, we wouldn't be in this pathetic situation
only time will tell, maybe Tony will sprout some wings...
having said that
I sincerely doubt that it will happen. I think we'll win against Cleavland & look good doing it!
Then all the girls will throw their panties, only to have to retrieve them after the next game we lose.
I hope I'm wrong, but I really don't think so... -
Well Ross is dealing with a disgruntled fan base. He'll likely want to go with a proven guy to get more butts in seats. I think hiring a guy with absolutely no coaching experience to be the head guy is unprecedented in this league but I may be wrong. If you as an owner truly believed he was going to be a great coach you might do it, but you'd have to understand there would be serious lumps to take the first couple of seasons. I don't think Ross is in a position to bring in a guy who has to take lumps like that.
-
Not sure if serious. -
Players put in years of work and time before they can be even talked about as a NFL head coach, I don't even know what to think of this post. I thought maybe 23rd was foreign until I seen the army tag.....I don't get it.

and therein lies the onion ... you're certainly on to something
however
it could happen, as a stop-gap measure, to hold the fort while we look for another coach
it might prove to be a reasonable & inexpensive experiment, if the season is lost in 2011
the risk would be minimal & the rewards incalculable -

1) happens everyday in the real world... we elected a community organizer without a full term served as Senator to the highest office in the land.
2) surely, it is not inconceivable that Chad Pennington could rise to head the Miami coaching staff.
3) and I welcome & respect our foreign fan-base. there is no reason to assume their opinions are less valid than any other opinion on a football forum, we are all a part of dolfandom!

lets not think about that too much, could become a self-fulfilling prophecy -
Come on! -
1. Real world doesn't matter, it doesn't happen in the NFL, and for very good reason.
2. Within the next 5 years, yes, yes it is surely inconceivable.
3. Agreed, but sometimes foreign fans that are new to the game don't understand every aspect of the NFL, beyond the game especially. -
I just hope he doesn't fist pump after a field goal and tear his shoulder out of his socket.

I've read some crazy threads before but this one is just about as off the mark as I can remember. 23rd, you certainly didn't think this post through very well. Here are some of my reasons, and I'm just an amateur footballer like most of the rest of us on these forums...
1) Chad Pennington has NEVER coached anyone or any team before. Ever. What makes him qualified ?
2) Chad Pennington still has desires to play again.
3) Even the guys that jump out of nowhere to become HC's in the NFL have years and years of experience. I remember guys like Herm Edwards, Jack Del Rio, Jim Harbaugh, Mike Ditka, Mike Tomlin, Lovie Smith, Tony Dungy, Dick LeBeau, Terry Robisky as players but all of them spent years as an assistant coach before [most] becoming coordinators, and finally head coaches...
4) Ross is a shrewd businessman, although rather lacking as an NFL owner at this point, however, even he knows that you don't put a major corporation, like an NFL franchise, in the hands of someone not remotely equipped to do the job. For example, you'd never find the Apple folks searching computer repair shops for a new CEO because Steve Jobs is stepping down and they need a replacement who knows something about the business, would you ??
5) It's a nice sentimental gesture for a guy like Penny to be considered as a HC, but that is simply because he salvaged one season in the last 15 for us, not because of his actual qualifications.
6) I like Penny, I loved the season he was here for us, but in all reality, if he was such a great coach, why has it taken Henne so long to blossom ?? In the end, it took experience, additional talent around him and a system designed for him to succeed for him to break out and still the jury is out on him. So Penny didn't do that great of a job on Henne so what makes anyone think he can succeed in a position that he does not have all the qualifications for ?
There are quite a few other points to make, but I think this suffices. Penny is simply not qualified to be an NFL coach...even an assistant, much less a HC. -

Friend Larryfinfan:
1) you're as entitled to your opinion as anyone on this forum is entitled to their opinion. I agree with some of which you wrote, but won't rule out the possibility of Pennington entering the fray. Anything can happen. I think it's time, after decades of conventional blunders, to begin looking out of the box a little bit for solutions.
2) in my opening statement I explicitly wrote:
I pose this as a question, that could be an answer to our woes, not a solution that I know would work, but I like the idea!
3)With 57% of our forum already believing the season is lost, I believe any speculation is valid on what to do next. -
The main reason I'm against this, outside of it being completely crazy, is that it would probably ruin what could be a great coaching career, before it ever even started. CP NEEDS to start as a qb coach or asst...then go through the natural ranks.

Secondly, as I said, you don't just put someone in power just because he's a sentimental favorite of the fans.
Third, it's simply not a very sound idea for any business, let alone one as unconventional as the NFL. The guy has no experience of any kind as a coach and suddenly he's an option to take over a franchise ?? I love my Fins, but would find it very, very difficult to stay a fan if Ross were to do something that far fetched.
Fourth, even if 57% of the fans on this forum feel that Sparano can't right the ship, doing something dumb (from conventional football wisdom view) won't make this or next season any better. And who's to say that the 57% are right ?? The 57% are upset with the last 3 seasons, not just the start of this one.
Fifth, Penny is a very studious person and into total preparation, just like he approached the game as a player. He won't jump on the top of the heap without knowing what's under the pile. To think that he'd even consider an NFL HC job without being prepared is a slap in his face. I think he would be offended that anyone would think that he'd make that kind of a move without being prepared for it.
Oh, and for the record, while it's been a long time, it hasn't been decades since we've been successful. I'd say we had a decent year or two in the 2000's, albeit not sustained... It has been decades since a SB win though....
I'm not totally against a coaching change. I think it's coming even though I'm not convinced Sparano deserves to get booted. Our bumbling owner has made it abundantly clear that he's in the market for a replacement. His bungled attempt at courting another coach and the lockout convinced him to rethink about it this past year, but I think if I'm Mrs. Tony, I'm getting the house ready to put up for sale. Knowing Ross' penchant for brand names, he'll put the full court press on guys like Cowher, Fisher and Gruden for a replacement. He won't be going after an unknown (you know, like Sparano was when he came here). I think we fans sometimes don't give Ross enough credit for what he's accomplished as a businessman because he's made some blunders to start out things with the Fins, but he won't be hiring a guy that at this point in his development would be destined to fail as a HC.
