Well, all hope for having a good defense next year is now gone.

 

Gase has made a big mistake if this is true. His first BIG one IMHO this team needs a real DC and not a young project at the position. Vance was nothing special as a DC but hiring a guy from his tree with less experience is a bad move.

 

Goddamn! I totally agree! **** this ****! I am so tired of seeing the Dolphins suck. Every ****ing year it is the same. This move will haunt Gase.

 

I think this is a better move than you may think. He knows the defense. He won't be teaching a new one. Plus the players are familiar with him and actually like him. They respect them honestly. This should pay off.

Calm down everyone. Gase isn't dumb enough to short change himself so quickly. If he wasn't 100% comfortable, and didn't know the players were 100% comfortable he'd at least interview others. If he's jumping so quickly he trusts this is the best move.

 

Chances are this was the plan since last season.

 

It's a hiring for the primary purpose of continuity - but what's the point of continuing a scheme that ultimately failed them in the end?

 

I just tired of a weak team. I want Miami to be feared by others. I want a defense that will make Brady retire!

 

Because Burke doesn't have to use the same exact scheme?

I have been moved up to management before and replaced who hired me, doesn't mean I did everything exactly the same as them, in fact I changed quite a bit based on what I saw from the outside looking in when I was in "the ranks" so to speak.

 

I don't like that he was our linebacker coach this season, and the linebackers were the worst performing unit on the team. I also dont like that he is going to continue running the wide nine. I see nothing to indicate this is a good move. We need a proven successful DC in my opinion.

He would retire if he got the "Wake/Suh" hit like that Jets QB did. Or even a hit like MM took against the Steelers. Next year needs to be Brady's last and it would be amazing if Miami ended it for him.

 

Seriously, you can't get the one thing right? Burke has been a coach in the defensive philosophy for more than a decade under Jim Schwartz. He's not less experienced than Vance Joseph in it.

 

We lost Misi and Jenkins for the majority of the year and those guys were even questionable starters, both of whom I'd like to replace regardless on their health or not. We then started Neville Hewitt who did alright considering, Special Teamer Mike Hull and cast off/veteran we signed mid season Donald Butler. You're mad he didn't cook up a Filet mignon and risotto when all he had to work with was a flank steak and russet potato.

 

Is this really our schedule next year?

Here is Burke's experience lol

Burke spent the past seven years as an NFL linebackers coach, working with the position group in Cincinnati (2014-15) and Detroit (2009-13). He also spent five years with the Tennessee Titans, where he served as an administrative assistant (2004-05) and defensive assistant/quality control coach (2006-08).

 

Excuses, excuses, excuses. The linebackers couldn't tackle worth a damn, they were continuously out of position and looked lost in coverage. Always took bad angles and had terrible gap discipline against the run. All of that indicates bad coaching. See no evidence to indicate he deserves the DC job and will turn the defense around. He is also a wide nine guy which is a system I happen to hate.

He's got a decade plus of coaching experience in the scheme with the two people who invented it, and worked with the unit that best prepares someone to deal with the entire defensive big picture.

I don't think anyone cares that you would prefer to hire an experienced defensive coordinator. We'd have the same caliber posters complaining about hiring a retread that has invariably been fired before. In reality that's not really how any of it works or you should look at it.

 

You say excuses I say realistic expectations. We're playing with 4th string players and that's just not feasible to expect that unit to excel above expectations...

With the changes in CBA and practice limitations, a bad tackling team is personnel imo as this point in time in their football careers, they should know how to tackle. We will upgrade linebackers, and they'll have more success.

 

This is why Burke was brought in. If not promoted here, he'd probably be joining Vance as DC in Denver.

Possibly but I cant say I enjoyed our defensive scheme at all last year way to much bend dont break. Kiko while good was out of position all the time giving up huge runs. Corners played soft scared to be beaten deep so teams tore us up on the inside and middle. Outside of wake I dont think we had a good rush. I wanted a new coach with a good system and not someone the guys like, but someone who can mold this defense into at least what Jim Bates was able to do.

 

I'm pretty sure in that time frame he's forgotten more about coaching football than you, me, or anyone else on this board will ever know.

 

I'm a little surprised VJ left but I won't lose any sleep over it. I think continuity is needed with a young team so I don't see a problem promoting someone from within.We just finished the best season we have had in years. But just out of curiosity what other names were out there to replace VJ?

 

Can we play a game before crowning him the worst hire in history? holy ****. Any 'good' DC has to start somewhere...

Sure, we don't know if Gase has assembled a deep enough staff to do so but continuity can't be stressed enough.

Draft/sign 2 new linebackers and get our stud Safety back, plus Isa and Maxwell and I promise you this defense improves greatly, regardless of whose coaching it.

Burke is in a far better situation to succeed than VJ was.

 

I like the continuity. It takes time for players to assimilate and fully understand the nuances of a scheme.

The biggest problem with the LBs was a lack of talent. Kiko got himself out of position a lot in the first few games because he was trying to do too much, but was a lot better as the season went on. Misi and Jemkins are borderline starters, and their replacements were third string material.
I find it difficult to assess Matt Burke as a coach because of lack of talent he had to work with. Remember many people criticized the Gase hiring because his offensive numbers in Chicago with Jay Cutler and third string WRs weren't great.

Gase has been absolutely straight in his pressers so far. So I believe his comments on Burke are his genuine opinion of him as a a coach. Therefore I am inclined to trust this hire, albeit with some reservations.

In case you didn't notice, our 2nd and 3rd string was largely better than most club's 1st stringers this season. That does not equate to the Dolphins suck.

I have no idea how good Burke or even VJ was based on last year because of the sheer amount of injuries. Those are not excuses, they're facts and if you don't like it, try Finheaven, it may be more your speed.

That is highly likely given what has been stated in the past regarding Gase's knowledge that Joseph wouldn't be here long. Doesn't strike me as panic hire, moreso the next move in a plan.

This move allows the front office to continue to add pieces to the scheme already in place. Continuity is something many here have wanted for years. This is how continuity is brought about. The same scheme, the same coaches aside from one.

Good teams take this type of action.

Who knows maybe he proves to better than Joseph.

 

It's possible that Burke has plans to fix those issues that we struggled with this season. We need to hear from him on what his plan of action is the defense. You made some good points there my friend.

Of course I can't prove it, but I think he will be better than Joseph. My reasoning behind this is that the players will be healthy and he'll be given a better chance at being successful than Joseph could've been. Plus he could call plays and prepare his defense his way. There's no doubt that the players will buy into it. I believe the defense will be significantly better than this season. Plus I think Matt Burke will be a big reason behind it.
