http://espn.go.com/nfl/playoffs/201...in-iii-washington-redskins-partially-torn-lcl Hopefully for the Redskins sake, he heels like AP and not Dante Culpepper. AP may give Redskins false hope, but its unfortunate for RGIII.
Griffin also likely tore at least part of his anterior cruciate ligament (ACL), but it's unknown how severe it is because a previous knee injury he suffered at Baylor in 2009 required two screws and a rubber band to hold it together. Amazing.
I don't think the screws are all that uncommon, though I don't know about the rubber band (I highly doubt it's like an office rubber band). I have two screws in my leg from my ACL replacement.
Still never seen a knee brace allow a knee to bend sideways like that....thought that was the whole point of wearing a brace was to prevent the sideways bend...sad.
I too have had my left ACL replaced with a hamstring tendon graph and a couple of screws. What I found amazing is him playing at that level in college and into the pro's with it. But then again, I'm no specialist.
It wasn't a hard brace though. At least not like OL typically wear (that's the type of brace I have). While it surely provided some support, it obviously didn't provide enough (and the field conditions didn't help).
His original injury looked like a tear to me. I was extremely surprised when it just came back as a sprain.
Damn shame to see a talent like that perhaps never playing at that level again. I know football players have the mentality to play through anything but what is the point of the league constantly changing the rules to protect the QB if coaches keep playing injured players?
Same here. I couldn't believe he came back in and then that there was barely any damage. When I saw him this past weekend, I wondered if he wasn't playing on an ACL tear already and just trying to tough it out.
The problem with braces that arent a hard brace are that they slide around at times. Theyre designed to be less restrictive then a hard brace.
Sources are telling me that Mike Shannahan was seen at the hospital kicking the young man's wheelchair, insisting he "walk it off"
So torn LCL and ACL. Out a projected 6-8 months. Wonder if they'll try and have him ready for the opener, or give him more time to build up strength.
Not great news for his first year in the league, not going to last a long time (unsurprisingly really) if he continues playing the same way. I love watching him play, but always in the back of the mind you're asking yourself how long can he keep that going in the NFL. Compare the way Shanahan (likely with his job on the line) handled RG3 with the way Philbin and Sherman handled Tannehill, who was deliberately limited to the pocket for the early part of the season and not allowed to use his athleticism as much. Sherman even said it was so he would learn to be a pocket passer first.
I think it was Peter King who stated that the typical recovery is 32 to 37 weeks. Peterson came back in like 34 I believe. EDIT: I was close. Here's the original tweet. @SI_PeterKing Wes Welker played 32 weeks post-ACL/MCL surgery. Adrian Peterson 37 weeks post-ACL/MCL. Re RG3's ACL/LCL, it's 34.5 weeks till opening day.
Welker had (arguably) one his worst seasons as a pro when he came back, whereas Peterson had (arguably) his best season ever. So there is a bit of difference there IMO. I certainly don't expect Griffin to be back and looking even better when he returns.
I wonder if Shanahan is willing to stop using the read option and have RG3 be primarily a pocket passer? IMO, it is either do that or he'll be cutting the length of RG3's career in half. He's not as big and strong as Newton, so RG cannot withstand the same sort of pounding over the long haul. JMO.
Agreed I think the Redskins gave up way too much to get him because of the risk of injury to him is too great and if you limit him to pocket passing you just reduced his value. You almost have to keep him in the pocket or your gonna be playing cousins a lot. As good as he is I think it was a bad pick.
He's a guy you go all in on IMO so I don't blame the skins, I mean look of the turn around they had. Without RGIII the skins won't make the playoffs for the next 5 years. They got in their first year with him Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
IMO, his scrambling would still give them an extra threat. It is the designed runs, the read options, that are going to shorten his career. At least at the amount they did it.
