http://miamiherald.typepad.com/dolphins_in_depth/2008/05/ricky-williams.html If he is around for only 2 years then leaving to puff puff land we better get some running backs waiting in the wings to tandem Ronnie.
Let's see if they can cut it this year otherwise we'll be looking for replacements in free-agency or early in the draft next year. Plus, I'm not sure, but I think Ronnie's contract is up in 2 years too but hopefully he re-signs.
Pretty darn sure his new contract is only 1 year...and we have yet to see if he even makes it back from his injury. Not to mention we are going to have to see if he can take the Ridiculing Parnsips is surely going to give him...
What new contract? He has been playing under that lame Puff Daddy/Steinberg contract for what seems like forever......
Not a shock. He'll be 31 this season, and 32 next season. 33 is absolutely ancient for a running back.
We'll see, Ricky has huge debts like child support, and the offensive line we are building is the best we have even tried to assemble in years, and even though he is 31, he never has had a major knee injury to clip away at his speed. If he has a big year this year, I can see him signing a two year deal to stick around and pay down those massive debts, and perhaps he can full a Marcus Allen role for like MA did in Kansas City.
"A couple" is not a definate number in common usage. Ricky would have just said two if it were two, or he know how many he was planning on playing.
I feel like he'll play through this contract and then try and sign a two-year deal somewhere he can reach the incentives and play through that deal. He needs the money.
I dont think age is really all that important a factor in it at this point for Ricky. It in itself is not particularly important, as a 30 year old runningback has nearly a decade and a half of playing football from high school on wearing on his body. Ricky Williams doesnt have nearly the wear and tear alot of runners do as a pro. For example- Ricky Williams- 2137 career touches(Including CFL) Edgerin James(Same draft)- 3267 touches Ladainian Tomlinson- 2823 touches Clinton Portis- 1925 touches(26 years old) For example, Marshall Faulk bottomed out around 3000 carries, Curtis Martin around 3500, Jerome Bettis around 2800.
Who really thought he'd play for too much longer, not shocking at all. Ricky has always had his eye on life after football.
32... the age Ottis Anderson was when he won comeback player of the year for the Giants in 1989.. the following year, he helped them win the SuperBowl and was named MVP of that game. I think Ricky has two "good" years left in him. Of course, it's all up to him and how motivated he is.
Exactly, and most of those guys have had major knee injuries, Edge, Portis, LT, all had knee problems. Curtis Martin is the exception, he led the NFL in rushing when he was 32, but a bone on bone condition in his knee led to his retirement the next season (more or less). RW has had none of those, if we use Marcus Allen as the example, even he had a knee injury, yet in his early to mid 30's was quite productive in KC.
"a couple of more years" is not necessarily 2 more years.... It could be 2, 3 even 4 yrs...He was speaking in generalizations in that article... Look the Fins destiny no longer lies with Ricky Williams. If we have him for a couple of years and he doesn't get into any more issues with the league during that time...fine. None of us disagree that when healthy, clean and motivated, he's one of the best backs in the league. The question has been and will continue to be whether or not he can stay healthy, clean and motivated. This is really a none issue for the Fins...next year may be completely different situation in the RB position of this team...who knows right now for sure...
This is good perspective. Another thing to think about. All of the above were the "Feature" backs on their respective teams with the exceptoin of Bettis. Ricky, in all likelihood won't be touching the ball but ....12-15 times a game? IF he can get back to being even 75% of what he once was (I have real big reservations in that) he could easily last at least 2 more years, perhaps more like 4 if he is still running behind Ronnie. EDIT: I will say this. IF he can get back to being 75% of years ago, and he is coming in to spell our top 5 back in Ronnie, with the new additions to the O-line....this could really be interesting to watch.
He siad he is feeling better then he ever had in his life so I think he might he back from the injury or close to it
I am hoping he has something left......next year. He did not impress in Canada and has played very little in so many years that old Father time might not have waited for him to get his mental act together.
Guys, I know it's been said but a lot of people, and I mean a lot of people, use "couple" when they mean "several" At least where I'm from, San Diego. Which just happens to be where he's from. My law school buddy played high school football with Ricky. I'm just sayin.
Players always say that when they hit there 30's (a couple more years) because they know that their time is comming soon. If he has a break out year and then signs with us for say 2 more years I wouldn't doubt that he plays more than 2 years for PARCELLS... No one else.
Hey if he consistently plays for us, for only two more yrs, that is more then he has done for us the last five. I'll take it.
If say the bottom out amount of carries is around 3000 then if Ricky carries the ball say 15 times a game he has probably another 4 years left in him. You all bring good points. He hasn't had major knee injuries and he has plenty of debts to pay and a family to support. He may, out of necessity, have to play another 3 years after his current contract expires after this season. But it's all up to him whether he is motivated or not. We'll have to wait and see how it all plays out.
i think Parcells is just going to push his buttons in a positive way. he has already started by speaking to him directly and then having lunch with him. now Ricky feels part of the organization again and not alienated or just run into the ground. Parcells told him in their meeting he expects him to be like O.J. Anderson was for the Giants. seems to be working so far. now let's see how he does on the field.
