This is pretty weird. It could potentially eliminate a bunch of fringe players from NFL rosters. Don't know what to say about this.

For goodness's sakes.
Keep it up, I can invest my time elsewhere.
IMO..adopt the CFL rules, bubble around the returner OR take the ball at your 25 yd line.felly smarts, brandon27, MikeHoncho and 1 other person like this. -

The NFL should start doing a series of exhibitions when considering new rule changes that would have major effects on the game. Coaches would be encouraged to try new things but try to win. Fans get to sample it, and potential problems get exposed.
Don't think I like that idea though. At least it's still just a suggestion. -
If you dont want to risk injury find another sport to play n and in Roger Goodels case find another sport to be commisioner of like womens softball for instance.

If that happens they might as well go to flag football. The kickoff may be hazardous but that is part of the attraction of the game.

Goodell's ruining football. I know a few years back he had a proposal floated to the competition committee to eliminate the 3-point stance of O and D Linemen. True story.
-
He may be 'ruining' football, but people will still watch.
-
Both ideas are rubbish. This is football. People hit each other, people get hurt, people get paid well to take the risk and people have a choice whether they want to do all those things. Goodell is taking as much of the physical aspect as he can out of the game out of fear of lawsuits.

Dumbest idea ever. Really, eliminating a major part of the game because he doesn't want to risk injury? These player sign up for football at 6 years old knowing they can get hurt, it comes with the territory man. What do you say to all the special teams players that make a living just running down the field on kick offs to support their family, what they can't play football any more because the commish thinks it's too dangerous? I knew all these damn rule changes would have a slippery slope affect, I mean this could change the outcome of games drastically, having a good special teams can make all the difference in a close game.
-
here is a better idea how about changing the special teams rules back to the way it used to be and stop sisifying the sport .
am I alone when I say that Goodell is screwing up the sport. he needs to be removed from office -
I don't get the outcry. This would make for some exciting football.

So there is a chance you could watch a while football game and never see your offense on the field?

If you really want to blame people I think we need to look at all the former players who are attaching their names to the concussion law suit. That suit is driving all these measures aimed at player safety.
Football is a violent sport. Everyone who decides to play knows what they are signing up for. -
The truth is that the game as it is played today looks nothing like the game as it was played at the turn of the last century. Somehow we can live today without the flying wedge and the Notre Dame shift. Rules change. The game evolves. It's just a shame that it's one more thing that has to change because of fear of litigation.

There goes any drama with a team down two possessions with a min left. Also idk who said this but I agree with who ever it was that, the moment when the first kickoff and you see all those flashes is a great moment that we will never see

I wonder if this does happen if a return specialist would have a case in court against the NFL...

I wonder what a 53 man roster would like without special teams on it?

Aside from the fact that they shouldn't be using flash in the first place, it's the absolute least important play of the game. Even if the kick is returned for a 108 yd touchdown, there is still 59:45 at the very least remaining to play.
I agree that the coin toss is boring, but let me go ahead and take it one step further; I think it's totally pointless to begin with. I really don't understand why it matters which half you get the ball first in. The "defer" is popular. Why? Because you get the ball back at the half? So? The other team got the ball first in the first half. There is an equal and opposite argument for any potential benefit you might suggest a coin toss offers.
The away team should get the ball first by default (as with baseball), and then just go from there.
I'm not sure what to do in regards to overtime, though. That cointoss makes sense. Unfortunately, the NFL overtime regulations, in of themselves, aren't perfect. They never were.

In a nutshell the ideas that Roger will begin givingHiruma78, dolfan32323 and like this. -
Lots of possibilities. It could become a key play. 15 yards. All different kinds of fake punts as well.
I'm guessing that the "touch back" might change too if we start putting the ball at the 30. Would the spot of the ball on change of possession out of bounds be altered now that the rule is no longer uniform?
While we are at it, get rid of field goals and extra pointslikes this. -
Maybe they can bring back Slamball too...likes this. -

Sample size and situation heavily skew the two.
Create a controlled experiment. 100 4th and 15's where the defense expects a conversion attempt vs. 100 onside kicks where the hands team expects it.
You're probably looking at something close to 20% vs 10%, respectively, with the former based entirely on the skill level of the offense, whereas the result of onside kicks are, for the most part, chance-driven.
To remove the kickoff is a slippery slope (as the events preceding it suggest). What is the point of special teams then? Why not just run two point conversions every time (the one XFL rule I did like)?
While it actually makes sense to remove special teams, from a logical point of view, it's insane; no longer football.maynard likes this. -

Its essentially 4th and 15 on your 30. You either punt it or go for it. You have a better chance at getting a 4th and 15 than you do an onside kick. I happen to like the elimination of the kickoff. -
-
If the issue is really high speed collisions, try the following:
Kicking team except for kicker(who is still kicking off from present position) line up at opposing 30.
Recieving team except returner lines up on its 15.
Players can't advance until returner touches the ball.
Team has option to try traditional onside kick in last 7 1/2 minutes. -
