Ronnie Brown is 29. He probably doesn't have 3-4 good years left in him. If you get a high 2nd round pick for a 29-year-old running back with a history of injuries, you do it.

 

I've often said the same thing, about how this team suffered for decades being unable to find a runningback. Through Marino's entire career and about 8 years prior to it, apologies to Delvin Williams and his lone 1,000 yard season, our running game was pathetic. All that being said it does appear to be easier to find an above average runningback these days, not Ronnie's caliber, but pretty good. And with Ronnie's habit of getting at least dinged every year it's pretty easy to understand where the talk comes from.

 

Especially with a strong offensive line, which is something we have and I imagine we will have for some time. But yeah I'd love to have Ronnie one more year and see how much more he can do with a WR defenses are afraid of, unless we just get a great deal for him.

 

yeah, I remember each and every one of those guys... But you also have to remember that there was a different philosophical mindset during that span of time and not one of those guys were drafted #2 overall.

But the point is valid that a lot of folks are making. He has had trouble finishing a full season healthy since he's been here. This regime doesn't like chronically injured players. Brown is not one of this regimes' picks. Probably the only reason there isn't more clamoring for us to dump him is that we have RW and PCobb and they've been able to hold things up when Brown was missing. RBs are more easily found these days, not because there is a better selection, but because in nearly all cases, us included, it's more of a RB-by-committee than having one stud back there.

On the other side of this, Ronnie's value to this team goes beyond his carries because he's shown to be very adept at the WCxQB spot, something that has to be kept in mind and when healthy, he's a stud back.

I have given up what direction this regime is going. They don't have any allegiances to anyone they didn't pick, so it wouldn't be a surprise at all if he was dealt. That said, the biggest reasons I don't see that happening is that a) this is his final year under contract and b) I don't think that creating another hole that will need filling is something this regime wants to do...this year...

And at this point Ricky had missed 10 games due to injury while Ronnie has missed 20.

 

:up: I was one who jumped on DJ's Wildcat multidimensional offense early on. I truly hope we continue to use and develope this formation and Ronnie does it better then anybody. Sure some things have not panned out YET. Still want to see Pat White have another year of being in our system, specifically our OTA's and off season weight training. I have not given up on him, he showed heart in his last appearance, even though it was apparrent he was by no means ready to QB the wildcat, much less an NFL team. So keeping Ronnie is paramount for the evolution of Wildcat, and to some extent any hope for Pat Whites future development as a player in that formation.

That was really your point though? I didn't get any hints toward that at all when I read your post. Either way, while I do think Brown has many productive years left in him, I don't think missing games has anything to do with it. I do agree with Ricky's case though, the guy basically took two years off and he takes care of himself.

 

Is anyone else excited to see an offense of Ronnie and Ricky and Chad and Brandon. I think that would scare the pants off deffensives. Yeah we could pick up another running back in the draft but he's not going to bring the same to the table as a healthy Ronnie Brown would. And if he get's injured again just don't sign him next year.

 

Definately! This could be a very dynamic group on offense. Now that the opposing D won't have the luxury of stacking the box we should have alot more openings for our running game.

I like Ronnie and all he brings to the table. I would prefer he stays, but the guy has to stay healthy.

 

RBs are a dime a dozen, easy to find, it is all about the O-Line.....if you have a good o-line, anybody can run through it...

Injury history, lack of second gear and age are all factors for why we are willing to trade ronnie. Unfortunately these things also hinder his value. No one is going to give us a second for Ronnie it just is not going to happen. My guess is we wont get the value there to trade him and he returns this season. After the season the FO will give him a deal they feel fair and brown will refuse and he will be told to test the market. Or we could deal him this year for say a fourth which seems fair considering all the factors i listed before. Ronnie is a good back but not great and he plays part time. Some fans elevate his value above reality.

 

They've been a top thirteen rushing team the last four years, including once in top ten. 12,6,12,13. Their top rushers have been Corey Dillon (812 yards), Laurence Maroney (835), Sammy Morris (727) and Laurence Maroney (757).

I would also like to see the WC develop some more, especially now with a passing threat in Marshall. I'm not too sure about White...I still think he's a wasted pick, but we'll see. But I do agree that keeping Brown is in their plans now, for the reasons you mentioned and for the fact that it would be another hole to fill if we shipped him out...

 

I like Ronnie alot, think he's a really standup guy and a great running back but I think if we can get a second we should let him go while he still has value. We seem to get stuck in this mode of let's keep so and so one more year...and the problem is every year you tack on the lower that value gets. If we want to keep up with other top teams in this league we need to get used to moving players in and out to avoid that complacency that always seems to set in with the team after players have been here a few years.

I think the FO has been doing a pretty good job so far there is only so much you can do when you have a talent deficit on the team. They seem to have some talent coming in now so we can finally afford to let some talent go for some more draft picks. I'm sure some will disagree but I think it leads to a better team overall, we just have to make sure we keep the talent coming in.

I don't quite understand everyone's obsession with Ronnie. I mean, yea he is a good running back, but people on this board are making him to be a perennial pro bowler. He doesn't have the greatest acceleration, no top end speed, sub-par ball carrier vision, and does not hit holes hard consistently. And as for the Wildcat option, I'd rather have my QB throw the ball than my running back. And by the way, just because they're not on the field doesn't mean their body doesn't still age. You're making it seem as if time stops when they aren't on the field.

 

I love Ronnie as much as the next guy, but sometimes you gotta trust in the FO. They make the decision not us.

 

NOO!! We Cannot Get Rid of Ronnie Simply because we need his playmaking abilities to complete our team if we get rid of him then thats just another space to fill and more draft needs. We dont need to take another step back by removing one of our very few playmakers.

We Have enough needs on the defensive side already at this point if we keep Ronnie our Offense is Solid we use the draft to make our defense faster and stronger and we'll be a force to be reckoned with.

Do you remember those offensive line either? I do not care WHO is the running back if your online sucks which ours did for a decade than no one is going to be able to run..

Denver for years plugged anyone into the offense and got 1000 yards due to their O-line. Also don't underestimate the wide receiver who will spread that defense allowing even more room for runs.

Also I know its flashy and sexy to break 15-20+ yard runs but all that is needed is a solid 6 yards making setting up short yardage on 3rd down to keep the chains moving..

While I like Ronnie Brown I really never felt like he was a true NFL elite back though I know his stats say so and hes earned his rep. I just feel hes a bit slow to the hole per say most of the time.

Also I think the front office has decided the Wildcat is not going to be a focus as much anymore. You have a real wideout, a real QB now though I think once and a while we will see it played maybe 3 times a game.

 

We also can't get rid of him because I just got an Authentic Ronnie Brown jersey!! Granted, it's from China, but is still cost money!

But yeah, we need to preserve our run game to go along with our new weapon at WR. They were #1 in the NFL before Cobbs and Brown went down. If they all stay healthy, which they should, it will be scary good this season with Marshall out there.

lol, how many times has Brown made his own holes? we aren't going to get equal value with a 2nd pick compared to one of the leagues best RB's. When Brown has been hurt they were both stupid, if you may "freak" injuries. He is a beast and has carried the load for our offense quit a bit over the last 4-5 years.

When he is healthy, everyone in the league knows he is one of the most dangerous weapons on offense. It just too funny to think that a 2nd round pick is a good value compared to Brown. Last year before his stupid foot injury, he was just voted the most dangerous player in the AFC along side Henry. Thing is, he is so multifaceted. Catch then run, pass, run fools over one after another. Yet we say he is injury prone? Feet are fragile and freak ish happens. Kinda like when you have to chase down a DB that just intercepted a pass because your QB sucks :headwall:

I just hope we keep him around, best back we've ever had in a Fins uniform yet some feel we need to trade him for a "better" back. You show me a better back and then how we get him. I'll prob still take Brown, his size and agility just are too hard to match all in one back

 

The injury issues is why we kept Ricky and PC in the first place I'm sure. To a degree, at least and they are play makers. Ronnie just needs to drink more milk, LOL!

I must admit though that I'm intrigued by Spiller. First RB I've seen that I would consider trading RB to aquire.
