If by "scapegoat" you mean, coach his team to under performance then yes, he may end up being the scapegoat.

I don't think he knows what scapegoat means. He thinks Ireland was the scapegoat when he built mediocre teams. When you're a bad team, there is plenty of blame to go around and they should be held accountable. Philbin is getting his third year, Ireland got enough years and did nothing with it. If we underperform under Philbin in year 3, he has to go period. How will year 4 be different than year 1, 2 and 3. We should just accept not going to the playoffs when teams like the Chiefs go from terrible to 11 wins or what ever in a single season with a new coach. I mean seriously... the excuses are already being made.

Dolphins fans really thought we were getting the "architect" of the Packers high powered offense lol...Philbin was probably closer to being McCarthy's assistant than he was to being some mastermind.

Are we allowed to criticize people? I'm serious. In every thread, someone is quick to post some overwrought metric that proves we have the best in the league at everything, but yet we won 8 games.

It's fine to have hope for improvement, but the issue is that clear failures can't even be criticized.

That being said... Philbin's time here has been very questionable. Have to think in Ross' mind, its playoffs or you're out this year.

As much as I hate to admit because I cant stand him, he has got better as a HC.....and he has a hand in drafting as well....

Considering his first 7-9 was good enough for a playoff berth and a playoff victory, that earned him some time.

Had we not crapped out the last 2 games I don't think many would be calling for Philbin's firing, even if they still had legitimate questions about his ability.

If we backed into the playoffs with a 7-9 record, you and many others would be calling that a meaningless victory, fool's gold. Just as you would have if we had backed in this year.

Instead of speculating, you could read what I actually wrote and you'd find that I was as gung ho as anybody about getting in, and I thought we'd win the last two games and have an excellent chance to beat Cincy.

Doesn't mean I thought we were a great team, just that we were seemingly peaking at the right time and had relatively easy competition in front of us.. I wanted to get in and would have thoroughly enjoyed.

 

Matt Hasselbeck and Tarvaris Jackson for QBs will do that to you. I'm surprised they won 7 games with those bums. Then he drafted his own guy, and we know the rest. Philbin had the luxury of picking his guy immediately and still hasn't made the postseason despite being in prime position to do so this past season.

Is Seattle's record because of Carroll or Wilson? Let's also stop pretending Wilson was Carroll's guy. They brought in every last QB they could because they were so desperate and STILL didn't draft Wilson till the 3rd.

1) mistakes were made by a rookie coach. our rookie QB literally fell apart (after taking a horrific beating through-out the season) in our last two games... games we were strongly favored to win. how different the conversation would be had we made the play-offs. and there are those amongst us that embrace the defeat as a good thing, exposing the team for what it really is?
2) we've had a number of class head coaches eaten alive by the media & fan-base. proven bulls with nothing more to prove, simply walked away rather than endure the Miami Gauntlet. Can you blame them? simply nothing new in any of this... pure & simple cannibalism. what chance has Philbin got with the cards stacked against him in 2014?
3) a lot of good things in 2013, the offensive line was not one of them. unfortunately, it all begins in the trenches. having said that, a lot of things were done right.
4) lastly, what pleasure so many took in the trumped-up, unfair & meaningless "bully-gate mockery that demoralized & humiliated a team in the midst of trying to move forward. what a joke! we eat our own.

I think Joe Philbin will not get a break this year, there is no level playing field. having said that, I believe he has all the attributes to be a winner & in a different situation Philbin would excel.

all these things I have repeatedly & consistently stated in various ways throughout the season. maybe we need to collectively take a good look in the mirror. be it as it may, it is what it is... dinner is served!

I don't care if Wilson was Carroll's guy; it's irrelevant. Lots of coaches lose their jobs because they don't have a QB. Carroll was able to win 7 games without one. Then Carroll got a QB and the team immediately jumped to the top of the NFC and won a Superbowl with a 25 year-old under center. Philbin has his guy, a top-10 pick, and hasn't put up the W's. Your question about their record is pretty foolish. It's a combination. Coaches aren't consistently winning big in the NFL without a QB.

Seattle had/has hands-down the most talented team in football & Wilson was a convenient/excellent fit for their offense. it was a happy meeting of minds & talent that took them to the SuperBowl. fail to see a legitimate comparison with Miami in 2013... apples & oranges.

So then that defense and running game played virtually no part in Seattle's success, its solely just Carroll and Wilson?

 

Why are you a member of a haters club if you criticize, have doubts, questions or just don't have confidence in Philbin? In my opinion a coach is no different than a player, he has to earn respect and confidence from the players and the fans. I still have hopes in Philbin but I just don't think he has done anything noteworthy or enough to give us confidence in his abilities as a head coach. He may very will turn things around this year, but we will just have to wait and see.

 

McCarthy was a lot better then Philbin. he was 8-7-1. I think Philbin did well to keep the team playing hard after the Incognito incident. McCarthy did terrible when he lost his starting QB.

 

While I don't think you're point is way off it is a lot different to be comparing a guy that won a National Title in College and had the pedigree that Carroll had vs. Philbin are entirely different. Carroll is also a popular personality which isn't necessarily a fair thing to judge but people do give more leeway to someone they like vs. someone they are apathetic towards or just don't like. I don't mind Philbin getting another year, I'm not a hater but him and Carroll are two different situations IMO.
